Official remotely operated vehicle (ROV) footage shows what remains of OceanGate’s Titan submersible on the seabed near the Titanic wreck. It does not show an intact submarine resting on the ocean floor, and it does not capture the moment of the implosion.
The images show separated domes, pressure-hull fragments, a tail section and scattered debris in the darkness of the North Atlantic. A separate video recorded aboard the support vessel Polar Prince contains the apparent sound of the implosion reaching the surface.
What the footage actually shows
The seabed video was recorded by ROVs during search and salvage operations after the Titan disappeared on June 18, 2023. Investigators found a fragmented pressure vessel and separated vehicle components rather than a complete submersible.

- the aft dome and aft ring;
- the aft segment and portions of the carbon-fiber cylinder;
- rails and other components in a comingled wreckage mass;
- a separated forward dome;
- the forward segment and tail section;
- smaller carbon-fiber fragments and compressed debris across the seabed.
The NTSB reported that the aft dome, aft segment, aft portions of the cylinder and rails were located together in a principal wreckage area. Other pressure-vessel sections were found separately.
The footage looks “ghostly” because the ROV was operating in natural darkness, using its own lights. The water at the Titanic wreck site is near freezing, but the official findings do not identify cold or darkness as the cause of the accident. The critical hazard was the enormous external water pressure at depth.
Where the wreckage was found
The wreckage was located near the RMS Titanic, approximately 330 meters (1,083 feet) east-northeast of the ship’s bow. It was not inside the Titanic wreck.
The fatal dive took place roughly 370 nautical miles southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The implosion occurred at approximately 11,032 feet (3,363 meters) below the surface. In the NTSB report, “miles” refers to nautical miles unless otherwise stated.
ROVs first located the debris during the search. Investigators then documented the arrangement on the seafloor, recovered additional pieces and transported wreckage for more detailed examination. Not every fragment was necessarily recovered or publicly displayed.

Is this video of the implosion?
No. The ROV footage shows the wreckage after the pressure-hull failure. It is not an optical recording of the instant when Titan imploded.
A different recording, made aboard the support vessel Polar Prince, shows crew members monitoring the descent. The approximately 2.5-minute video includes a faint sound followed by Wendy Rush asking, “What was that bang?” The Coast Guard said it believed the sound was the implosion’s acoustic signature reaching the surface. About two minutes later, the crew reported that tracking had been lost.
That distinction matters: the support-ship video contains an apparent sound associated with the collapse, while the seabed video documents its aftermath. It does not show the vehicle failing underwater.
Associated Press reporting describes the support-vessel recording.

What happened to the pressure hull?
Titan relied on a carbon-fiber composite pressure vessel with titanium components. A pressure vessel is the part of a submersible that protects occupants from the surrounding water pressure.

Delamination means that bonded layers in a composite separate from one another. That separation can weaken the structure’s ability to carry repeated loads.
Investigators also identified a sigmoidal buckle in one pressure-vessel piece: an inward bend adjacent to an outward bend. The wreckage showed fragmentation, buckling, fractured material and compressed debris. It should not be described as melted, vaporized or simply crushed flat without evidence supporting those terms.
At extreme depth, a local weakness or buckle can allow the surrounding water pressure to overwhelm the hull. The resulting collapse is an implosion, not a conventional surface explosion.

NTSB findings
In its report dated October 2, 2025, the National Transportation Safety Board identified OceanGate’s inadequate engineering process as the probable cause. The process failed to establish the actual strength and durability of the pressure vessel.

The NTSB said the carbon-fiber vessel sustained delamination damage, later worsened by additional damage of unknown origin. That damage led to local buckling and eventual hull failure.
The report also identified contributing factors including:
- flawed interpretation of pressure-vessel monitoring data;
- continued operation of a damaged pressure vessel;
- insufficient voluntary guidance and small-passenger-vessel regulations tailored to pressure vessels for human occupancy;
- the absence of sufficiently specific standards for this type of operation.
Canadian TSB findings
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board, whose report was released on June 17, 2026, concluded that the carbon-fiber hull failed progressively. Damage accumulated during successive dives, while the as-built properties of the hull were not adequately tested against the theoretical design specification.
The TSB also found that construction did not follow standard engineering practices and said OceanGate’s risk management was affected by organizational and social factors.

The two investigations are not describing unrelated explanations. Together, they point to a combination of inadequate engineering validation, manufacturing and construction problems, accumulated damage, flawed monitoring, risk-management failures and gaps in oversight.

These findings should not be reduced to the claim that the operation was simply “illegal” or “completely unregulated.” The official reports discuss specific issues involving registration, inspection, engineering, classification and the limits of existing rules. The NTSB said Titan was not registered or documented in the United States and was not inspected by the Coast Guard, while also noting gaps in applicable regulations.

The public evidence comes from different stages of the investigation:

The NTSB reported that an external underwater camera rated to 6,000 meters was recovered. Its casing remained intact, but its lens was shattered. The undamaged memory card contained 12 still images and nine videos, none from the fatal dive. Consequently, viral edits that combine seabed footage, surface audio, documentary material or animation can make separate recordings appear to be one continuous view when they are not.
Who was aboard Titan?
The five people aboard were OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush; British explorer Hamish Harding; French deep-sea diver and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet; British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood; and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood. All five died in the June 18, 2023 incident.
Official findings establish the vehicle’s structural failure and the resulting loss of life, but the released footage does not provide a basis for speculation about the occupants’ final moments.
Where to view the official material
The Coast Guard’s Titan Marine Board of Investigation archive includes ROV footage, salvage footage from June 26, 2023, hearing materials, technical documents, exhibits and investigation records. An official ROV video is also available through DVIDS.
The most accurate description of the viral “ghostly” footage is therefore straightforward: it is official underwater video of the fragmented Titan wreckage on the ocean floor after a catastrophic pressure-hull failure—not footage of an intact submersible and not a visual recording of the implosion itself.
