Cloud browser automation lets your Playwright or Selenium code control a browser running on a hosted service instead of on your computer or your own servers. You write the test or workflow locally, create a remote session, connect through the provider’s supported protocol, then navigate, interact, and verify results just as you would with a local browser.
The fastest way to learn is to run one small, deterministic script against a known page before adding parallelism, authentication, or CI. This guide walks through that setup, explains when hosted browsers help, and compares Browserbase with BrowserStack Automate using their documented capabilities.
What cloud browser automation is—and when to use it
A cloud browser is a browser process running in infrastructure managed by a provider. Your automation code connects to it remotely, commonly through Playwright’s Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) connection or Selenium WebDriver. The browser loads the page and performs the actions; your program sends commands and receives results.
This separates browser execution from the machine running your test code. It can spare you from installing and scaling browser infrastructure yourself, and gives teams a place to run repeatable browser work in CI or across a managed browser and device matrix. The trade-off is that your code now depends on a network connection, provider session lifecycle, and the browser versions and capabilities the service exposes.

- Use a hosted browser when you need repeatable remote execution, managed capacity, or a provider’s browser/device coverage.
- Use a local browser during early development when fast iteration and direct inspection matter more than shared infrastructure.
- Check the provider’s protocol, supported framework versions, concurrency limits, authentication options, data handling, and pricing before choosing a service.
Choose Playwright or Selenium
Both frameworks can control hosted browsers, but they connect differently depending on the service: Playwright commonly uses CDP, while Selenium uses WebDriver. Browserbase publishes setup paths for both frameworks. Pick the framework your existing tests and team already use unless a required provider capability dictates otherwise.
Playwright
Playwright is a modern browser automation and testing framework. Its documentation covers Chromium, WebKit, Firefox, branded Chrome and Edge, and emulated tablet and mobile devices. Browser binaries are version-specific: install the browsers for the Playwright version your project uses, and update the framework and binaries together when you upgrade. See Playwright browser documentation.
Selenium
Selenium uses the WebDriver protocol and remains an option for teams with existing WebDriver suites or framework integrations. Confirm that the cloud provider offers the required WebDriver configuration and browser capabilities for your language and test setup before porting a suite.
First remote Playwright session with Browserbase
Browserbase’s official quickstart demonstrates creating a hosted session, connecting to it over CDP, navigating to a site, interacting with page elements, and extracting content. The precise SDK setup and session creation API can change; follow the current Browserbase Playwright quickstart for its current package installation and credential configuration. The essential sequence is:
- Create a Browserbase account and obtain the credentials required by its current quickstart.
- Install the required SDK and Playwright version, then install matching local browser binaries if needed for local development.
- Create a browser session with the provider’s API or SDK, using the session options shown in the quickstart.
- Connect Playwright to the session’s CDP endpoint.
- Navigate to a stable test page, perform one interaction, and assert an observable result such as the page title, URL, or a heading.
- Close the session in a cleanup path, including when an assertion fails.
Keep the first test intentionally small. This separates connection problems from locator problems and makes it easier to see whether the provider created the session and whether your script reached the page.
Illustrative Playwright flow
The following shows the remote connection pattern, not a complete Browserbase SDK invocation: the session-creation method and CDP endpoint are provider-specific, so use the current quickstart for those values rather than guessing them.

// Pseudocode: createSession and cdpUrl come from the provider's current SDK/API.
const session = await createSession();
const browser = await chromium.connectOverCDP(session.cdpUrl);
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const heading = await page.locator('h1').textContent();
if (!heading) throw new Error('Expected page heading');
} finally {
await browser.close();
await session.close();
}
Replace the pseudocode session calls with the provider’s documented code and use a stable page and assertion for your first run. Avoid committing API credentials; load them from environment variables or your CI secret store.
Connect Selenium to a hosted WebDriver session
Browserbase documents Selenium WebDriver sessions as well as Playwright sessions. The exact remote URL, capabilities, and authentication format are provider-specific and may vary by language, so use the current Browserbase documentation rather than hard-coding an assumed endpoint.

- Read the provider’s current WebDriver instructions for the remote endpoint and required capabilities.
- Create a remote WebDriver instance with those settings.
- Navigate to a deterministic page, locate one element, and assert its text or another stable property.
- Call the driver’s quit method in cleanup so the remote session does not remain open.
Do not copy a local ChromeDriver configuration into a remote setup without checking the provider’s requirements: a hosted session may use a remote endpoint and provider-defined browser capabilities instead of a local driver binary.
Choose a cloud browser service
Browserbase and BrowserStack Automate address related but different priorities. Browserbase documents programmable hosted browser sessions with Playwright and Selenium options; BrowserStack Automate emphasizes cloud execution across browsers and mobile devices, test parallelism, CI and Local Testing, and debugging artifacts.
| Service | Documented strengths | Useful fit | Evidence qualification |

Before committing a project, compare browser and device coverage, framework/API support, session controls, authentication, concurrency, recordings and debugging artifacts, CI and private-network connectivity, deployment model, security and data-residency needs, and pricing structure. Provider pricing and limits can change; check the current plan details for the region and account type you will use.
When self-hosting may be appropriate
BrowserStack documents an Automate self-hosted solution deployable on AWS, Azure, or GCP, with automated browser updates, utilization metrics, framework integrations, and CI compatibility. This may be relevant when deployment location or infrastructure control is an important constraint. Confirm deployment prerequisites, supported frameworks, and commercial terms with BrowserStack directly. BrowserStack self-hosted documentation.

Make the first run reliable
Remote execution adds network and session failure modes, so begin with a deterministic target and a single assertion. Expand only after that path is stable.
- Use stable locators. Prefer accessible roles, labels, or deliberately stable test identifiers over brittle positional selectors.
- Wait for the condition you need. Dynamic pages may render after navigation completes. Wait for a selector or observable state rather than adding arbitrary long sleeps.
- Bound retries. Retry transient connection or load failures within a defined limit; do not retry assertion failures indefinitely, because that can hide a real regression.
- Capture useful artifacts. Browserbase documents session recording; BrowserStack documents video, text, console, and network artifacts. Turn on the provider-supported diagnostics that help explain failures.
- Always clean up. Close the browser and end the remote session in a finally/teardown path.
- Pin and update versions deliberately. Keep Playwright and its compatible browser binaries aligned; update them together and validate before changing CI images.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
Connection rejected or session cannot be created
Check that credentials are present in the process environment, have not expired, and are being sent in the documented format. Then verify that the session-creation request succeeded and that the returned endpoint belongs to the same session. Do not print secret values in logs.
Playwright reports an incompatible browser or protocol
Confirm that your installed Playwright version matches the provider-supported setup, and install or update the browser binaries using the Playwright CLI as described in the official browser installation guidance. For remote CDP, follow the provider’s current connection instructions rather than assuming every local Playwright feature is supported by every hosted session.
Navigation times out or the page is still loading
First confirm that the page is reachable from the provider’s browser environment. Use an appropriate navigation readiness condition and then wait for the specific element your test needs. Some sites load analytics or other background requests indefinitely, so waiting for complete network idleness may be unsuitable. Keep timeouts finite and report the URL and session identifier in diagnostics without exposing credentials.
Element lookup fails intermittently
The locator may be unstable, the page may have changed, or the element may appear only after a user action. Inspect the provider’s recording, screenshot, or logs; wait for a meaningful element state; and replace brittle selectors. Avoid increasing a timeout before establishing that the locator identifies the intended element.
Remote sessions accumulate or CI runs stall
Ensure every test path—including setup errors and assertion failures—reaches session teardown. If running parallel jobs, compare planned concurrency with the provider’s account limits and use bounded worker counts. Add retries only for failures you have identified as transient.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Remote browser automation incurs network round trips between your test runner and the hosted browser. Keep related actions in one session, avoid unnecessary page reloads, and use parallel execution only when tests are independent and the provider’s concurrency allowance supports it. Autoscaling or parallel-run features do not remove the need to measure your own workflow’s runtime and stability.
Pricing models vary: Browserbase describes usage-based pricing, while the cited BrowserStack pages focus on Automate capabilities rather than establishing current prices or limits. Check the provider’s live pricing and your plan terms before estimating recurring cost; do not infer a bill from a headline session count alone. Also factor in CI minutes, debugging retention, concurrency ceilings, and any self-hosted infrastructure you operate.

Or skip the browser setup
If the job is to capture a website as an image or PDF—not to run assertions or interact with a complex workflow—you can use a screenshot API instead of creating and managing a browser session. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport selection, dark mode, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, headers and cookies, caching, and bulk capture. See the ScreenshotNeo site and API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
