A screenshot API lets your code ask a browser service to render a web page and return an image or PDF. To get a first capture, choose a provider, create a server-side API key, send a request with the page URL and output format, then save or process the response according to that provider’s response format. The endpoint, authentication method, and returned data differ between services, so use the provider’s documentation rather than assuming one API’s request works unchanged with another.
What a screenshot API does
A screenshot API takes over the browser-rendering step: your application submits a URL (and sometimes HTML) over HTTP, the service loads and renders the page, and the response provides an image or PDF. Depending on the provider, the result may arrive as raw file bytes, JSON containing a download URL, or a redirect to a generated file.
This is useful when a workflow needs repeatable page previews, dashboard or report captures, automated QA, visual regression inputs, social-card images, or PDFs without managing a browser locally. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation describes its /screenshot endpoint as rendering a page’s HTML and JavaScript before capturing the fully rendered page: Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation.
What to choose before sending your first request
Decide what the capture must contain and how your application will consume it. These choices affect both the request parameters and the code that handles the response.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Input: A public page URL is the simplest case. Some services also accept supplied HTML. Pages behind authentication may require separate target-site cookies or headers, if the provider supports them.
- Output: Choose PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF if offered. The right format depends on whether you need crisp text, a compact image, or a printable document.
- Page area: Set the viewport dimensions for a normal browser-window capture; use a full-page option when the entire document is required. Full-page rendering can behave differently on pages with lazy-loaded images or fixed-position elements.
- Rendering controls: Check whether the API supports a delay, waiting for a selector or network idle, CSS selector capture, dark mode, device scale, custom CSS, or custom JavaScript. Use only the controls needed for the page.
- Delivery: Find out whether a successful request returns bytes, metadata with a URL, or a redirect. Your client must save the actual image or PDF rather than assuming the response body is always the file.
- Operations: Review quotas, rate limits, cache behavior, supported regions and browsers, batch or asynchronous jobs, and the provider’s error format before building production logic.
There is no comparable independent performance benchmark in the cited provider documentation. If latency or reliability matters to your use case, test the same representative pages and settings with each candidate; do not infer a winner from feature lists alone.
Make a first request with a generic endpoint
The request below shows a common POST pattern: send JSON containing a URL and format, authenticate with a bearer token, and write the response body to a file. It is illustrative, not a universal endpoint. Replace the example host, path, authentication header, and request fields with the selected provider’s documented values.
curl --request POST 'https://api.example.com/v1/screenshot'
--header "Authorization: Bearer $SCREENSHOT_API_KEY"
--header 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"url":"https://example.com","format":"png"}'
--output screenshot.png
For this command to save an image correctly, the endpoint must return image bytes directly. If it instead returns JSON metadata or a redirect, follow the provider’s instructions to retrieve the file. Screenshot API’s getting-started documentation describes obtaining a key, making a request, and using a returned CDN URL or redirect; its example uses an Authorization Bearer token and JSON fields including url, format, and fullPage (Screenshot API documentation).

The exact method and payload are provider-specific. For example, GetScreenshot documents GET and POST capture calls and controls such as dimensions, full-page mode, format, quality, delay, selector, dark mode, device scale, caching, and freshness; it also has a PDF endpoint (GetScreenshot documentation).

Keep the API key out of the browser
A screenshot-service key authorizes requests to that service; it is not the same thing as credentials for the website being captured. Keep the service key in server-side environment variables or your deployment platform’s secret store. Have your backend call the screenshot provider, then return only the resulting image or a suitably protected file reference to the browser.
- Do not put the key in client-side JavaScript, a React component, a public environment variable, a public image URL, or a query string that may be recorded in logs or browser history.
- Use HTTPS and avoid logging complete request URLs when they contain sensitive page URLs or other secret values.
- Restrict access to generated files if they contain private dashboards, customer information, or internal reports.
- If a key is exposed, replace and revoke it using the provider’s account controls, then update the server-side secret. ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart specifically recommends storing the dashboard key in an environment variable or deployment secret and warns against exposing it in client code or URLs (ScreenshotEngine quickstart).
ScreenshotNeo: a one-call hosted option
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its GET endpoint accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a basic capture, store the access key in a server-side secret and run this cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo supports 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS input, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies and user agent, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, batches of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can ease migration.

Get the response into your application
Once a request succeeds, handle the response according to its documented content type and status. If the provider returns bytes directly, save them to a file or stream them to your storage system. If it returns a redirect or a JSON URL, retrieve the asset through the prescribed flow. Avoid treating an error body as an image: check the HTTP status and content type before storing the response.
Python example for a bytes-returning provider
This pattern assumes the endpoint returns the image bytes directly and uses bearer authentication. Change the endpoint and headers to match the provider; if it returns JSON or a redirect, adapt the download handling.

Node.js example for a bytes-returning provider
This Node.js example uses the built-in fetch available in current Node releases. The endpoint, JSON schema, and auth header are illustrative. Check the provider’s response type before writing it as an image.
const apiKey = process.env.SCREENSHOT_API_KEY;
if (!apiKey) throw new Error("Set SCREENSHOT_API_KEY on the server");
const response = await fetch("https://api.example.com/v1/screenshot", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"Authorization": `Bearer ${apiKey}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({ url: "https://example.com", format: "png" }),
signal: AbortSignal.timeout(90_000),
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
const contentType = response.headers.get("content-type") || "";
if (!contentType.startsWith("image/")) {
throw new Error(`Expected image bytes; received ${contentType}`);
}
const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
await import("node:fs/promises").then(({ writeFile }) =>
writeFile("screenshot.png", image)
);
Choose rendering options deliberately
Start with a viewport capture and add options only when a representative page shows a real need. A delay can help a page finish animations or client-side updates, but arbitrary waits add latency and may still miss content. A wait for a specific selector is more targeted when the desired content has a reliable DOM marker. Network-idle waits may not be suitable for pages with persistent requests.

Full-page captures are useful for long articles and reports, but very tall pages can increase render time and output size. For pages with lazy-loaded images, check whether the provider scrolls or otherwise triggers loading before capture. If only one chart, card, or component matters, capturing a CSS selector can reduce irrelevant content. Custom cookies or headers can be necessary for a permitted authenticated target, but treat them as secrets and avoid capturing data you are not authorized to access.
For repeated captures, understand the cache controls and freshness semantics: a cached image may be faster, while a forced fresh render is preferable when the source changes frequently. For batch work, confirm the maximum batch size, per-item failure behavior, and whether jobs are synchronous or asynchronous. ScreenshotNeo, for example, supports caching with a TTL you choose, async jobs with signed webhooks, and bulk capture of 100 URLs per call; check its documentation for the precise parameters.
Troubleshooting common failures
- 401 or 403 response: Confirm the key is present, active, and sent using the authentication format the provider expects. Check that a proxy or hosting layer is not stripping the authorization header.
- Invalid request or unsupported option: Compare parameter names, types, and allowed values with the provider’s current endpoint docs. Do not assume that options from another service are interchangeable.
- File contains JSON or text instead of an image: Inspect the status, content type, and body. The service may have returned an error, metadata, or a redirect rather than raw bytes; handle its documented download flow.
- Capture is blank or incomplete: Check that the target URL is reachable from the provider, increase or replace a fixed delay with a selector wait where possible, and verify whether the page depends on scripts or resources blocked by the capture settings.
- Images or lower-page content are missing: Use full-page mode where appropriate and confirm lazy-loading behavior. Some pages only load content after scrolling or interaction.
- Timeout: Try a simpler viewport capture, remove unnecessary waits, or inspect whether the target page itself is slow. For production, set a sensible client timeout and handle timeout errors without treating them as a successful capture.
- Rate limit or quota error: Check the plan’s limits and the provider’s response headers or dashboard. Queue or throttle requests, and use batch or asynchronous functionality only where the service documents it.
- Unexpectedly old result: Review whether caching is enabled and how long it lasts. Request a fresh render using that provider’s documented control if freshness is required.
Compare providers on evidence, not promises
When choosing a service, first verify the mechanics that affect your workflow: whether the endpoint accepts GET, POST, or both; whether it returns bytes, a URL, or a redirect; and which image, PDF, page, and browser controls it supports. Then check operational fit, including quotas, limits, cache behavior, geographic or browser options, batch capture, security controls, and the provider’s current price.
ScreenshotNeo is worth trying first when clean captures and predictable billing matter: it removes supported consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 captures. Screenshot API documents a three-step key-and-request flow; GetScreenshot documents screenshot and PDF endpoints; ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart specifies direct file-byte responses; Cloudflare Browser Run may suit teams already using Cloudflare infrastructure and accepts a URL or HTML through REST API or Workers Binding access. The cited documentation does not establish a comparable fastest or most reliable provider, so test your actual pages and settings before making that decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a screenshot of a private dashboard?
Only if you are authorized to access it and the provider supports the required authentication method, such as cookies or custom headers. Keep both the screenshot API key and target-site credentials server-side, and protect the resulting file.

Should I use GET or POST?
Follow the selected provider’s endpoint documentation. GET is practical for simple query-based captures; POST is often preferable for JSON options and helps keep credentials out of the URL when authentication is sent in a header.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I use a screenshot API for PDFs?
Some providers support PDF output, but availability and controls vary. Check whether the service has a dedicated PDF endpoint or a format option, and review paper size, margins, orientation, and page-range support where offered.
How do I know whether an API is fast enough?
There is no comparable independent benchmark in the cited documentation. Measure end-to-end time on the pages, regions, output formats, and rendering options that matter to your application.
