Yes. You can generate an invoice PDF without an HTML-to-PDF conversion library by asking a browser to render the invoice and print the result. Use Chrome Headless for a simple command-line capture, or Playwright when your application needs automation, data loading, page selection, and explicit PDF settings.

Both methods use the browser’s print engine. They do not validate tax rules, e-invoicing mandates, or accounting requirements in your jurisdiction; those remain application and compliance concerns.
Prepare invoice HTML for printing
Make the invoice a complete, deterministic page before invoking the browser. Resolve template data, load fonts and images, and ensure totals are already calculated. A minimal structure might look like this:

Option 1: Chrome Headless from the command line
Chrome for Developers documents this basic command:

Remove browser-added header and footer

Control capture timing

chrome --headless --virtual-time-budget=5000 --print-to-pdf="INV-1042.pdf" "https://example.com/invoice/1042"--timeout caps how long Chrome waits before capture. --virtual-time-budget advances time-dependent page code in virtual time. Neither flag proves that an application’s API calls, images, fonts, or client-side invoice rendering have completed. Make the page itself expose a ready state, or use Playwright to wait for one.
Option 2: Playwright with explicit PDF settings
Install Playwright in your project and install the browser binaries required by that Playwright version. Each Playwright release expects specific binaries; using an unrelated system Chromium can produce launch or rendering differences. Playwright’s default headless shell and regular Chromium mode can also differ, so select and test the mode you deploy.

await browser.close();page.pdf() returns a PDF buffer; providing path writes it directly. It uses print CSS media by default. If your invoice is designed with screen styles, switch media before generating:

Important PDF options
- Paper: Use
format: 'A4','Letter', or another documented format, or specify customwidthandheight. Letter is the documented default when no format is supplied. - Orientation: Set
landscape: truefor wide tables; omit it for portrait. - Margins: Pass CSS lengths in
margin(top, right, bottom, left). Leave room for your own header and footer. - Backgrounds:
printBackgroundis off by default. Enable it when brand colors, shaded rows, or logos depend on backgrounds. - CSS page size:
preferCSSPageSize: truelets an@pagerule control size instead of the API’s format or dimensions. - Page ranges: Use
pageRanges: '1-2'or another range when exporting selected pages. - Scale: Set
scaleto fit unusually dense content, but verify text remains legible. - Headers and footers: Set
displayHeaderFooter: trueand provideheaderTemplateorfooterTemplate. Templates support placeholders such as page number, but script tags do not run and page styles are not available inside the template. - Tagged output: Set
tagged: truewhen you need the documented tagged-PDF option; it is false by default.
Make dynamic invoices deterministic
- Navigate to the authenticated invoice URL, or establish cookies and headers before navigation.
- Wait for a business-level marker such as
[data-invoice-ready="true"], not merely a fixed sleep. - Wait for web fonts and critical images where your browser version supports those checks, and provide a fallback font.
- Freeze volatile values such as “generated at” timestamps if repeatable documents matter.
- Use print CSS to hide buttons, navigation, cookie notices, and other screen-only controls.
- Render a representative invoice with many line items, discounts, tax rows, and a long customer address, then inspect every page.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is blank or missing invoice data
The capture happened before client-side rendering completed, an API request failed, or the URL redirected to a login page. Confirm the final URL and response status, wait for a ready selector, and log page errors and failed requests in Playwright. For CLI captures, make the page server-render the invoice or delay capture with the documented timing flags.
Unexpected date, URL, or page numbers appear
Chrome added its print header and footer. Add --no-pdf-header-footer, or in Playwright leave displayHeaderFooter false.
Colors or logos disappear
Print backgrounds are disabled by default in Playwright. Set printBackground: true, ensure the image URL is reachable from the browser, and avoid relying on hover-only states.
Layout differs from the browser window
PDF generation uses print media by default in Playwright, so @media print rules may intentionally change the page. Use emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) only when screen styling is the desired output. Check paper size, margins, and @page rules together.

Playwright cannot launch
Install the browsers for the exact Playwright version and verify that the deployment user can execute the binary. If you switch between the headless shell and regular Chromium, test both because their behavior can differ.
Rows or totals split awkwardly
Use print CSS such as break-inside: avoid on totals and line-item groups, repeat table headers where appropriate, and reduce oversized padding before changing scale. A browser cannot guarantee an aesthetically perfect break for every table, so inspect the actual output.
Reliability, performance, and operational considerations
Launching a browser for every invoice is simple but expensive in startup time. In a service, keep a controlled browser process alive, create isolated pages or contexts per job, and close them after use. Limit concurrency to available CPU and memory, and place a hard job timeout around navigation and PDF creation. Store the PDF only after the call succeeds, and record the invoice identifier, browser version, page URL, and failure reason for support.
Cache immutable assets such as logos and fonts, but do not cache personalized invoice responses accidentally. For reproducibility, pin the Playwright version and its browser download, then recheck output when upgrading. Treat generated PDFs as financial records: apply access controls, encrypt storage where required, and avoid logging customer data in page-console output.

Can I generate an invoice PDF from a local HTML file?

Why does Playwright produce a different result from Chrome’s print dialog?
