General Motors and LG Energy Solution are developing lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) battery cells for large Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac electric trucks and SUVs. GM says the chemistry could deliver higher cell energy density than lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) at a comparable cell cost, while retaining the performance expected of larger premium vehicles.

This is a development program, not a battery already shipping in a customer vehicle. GM has prototyped cells, plans pilot production in 2027 and is targeting full-volume production in 2028.

What GM actually unveiled

In an October 8, 2025 announcement, GM said it and LG Energy Solution had received a Battery Innovation of the Year award for work on LMR cells. GM says it has researched the chemistry for more than a decade and now intends to commercialize it with LG Energy Solution.

LMR is meant to occupy the middle of GM’s battery strategy: more capable than the company’s entry-level chemistry, but less expensive than high-nickel cells used when maximum performance is the priority. GM vice president Kurt Kelty described it as a chemistry intended to unlock premium range and performance at a more affordable cost.

How LMR chemistry is supposed to work

More manganese, much less cobalt

According to GM’s claims reported by WIRED on May 13, 2025, the announced cells use approximately 60–70% manganese, 30–40% nickel and up to 2% cobalt. Compared with many high-nickel designs, that substitutes more abundant, lower-cost manganese for much of the nickel and nearly all of the cobalt.

The exact final production formulation has not been published. The percentages describe the development cells reported in 2025, not a confirmed specification for every future GM battery pack.

The headline energy-density claim

GM says LMR can provide about one-third greater energy density than comparable LFP cells at a comparable cell cost. That is a cell-level company claim reported by WIRED; it is not an independently measured increase in vehicle range.

Actual driving range would also depend on pack size, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, thermal management, software and usable state-of-charge limits. A higher-energy-density cell could allow more range in the same space, a lighter pack for the same range, or a combination of both, but GM has not published production-vehicle range figures for LMR.

Prismatic cells and a simpler module

GM’s announced LMR cells use a prismatic format. The company says the new modules are designed with 50% fewer parts than their predecessors, which could simplify assembly and reduce opportunities for component failure. No independent teardown or production validation has established how that design will perform in customer vehicles.

Where LMR fits in GM’s battery portfolio

Chemistry GM’s stated role What is established
High-nickel Maximum performance and long-distance driving GM positions this as its highest-performance option; no new LMR comparison test is provided.
Lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) Entry-level affordability and durability GM uses LFP as the lower-cost, durable reference point for its portfolio.
Lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) Premium performance at a lower cost GM claims about one-third higher cell energy density than comparable LFP at comparable cell cost; the chemistry remains pre-production.

The portfolio framing is important: LMR is not being presented as a universal replacement for every GM EV battery. It is aimed at the demanding middle ground between inexpensive, durable LFP packs and higher-cost high-nickel packs.

When could GM’s LMR battery be available?

Time Planned milestone Status and qualification
2025 Prototype development GM reported approximately 300 full-size LMR cells prototyped at its Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan.
2027 Pilot production GM and LG Energy Solution plan a pilot line; the final plant location was not disclosed in the cited material.
2028 Full-volume production target GM is targeting volume production and says it aims to be the first automaker to deploy LMR. This is a company goal, not a guaranteed launch date.

GM is also building a Battery Cell Development Center near the Warren facility to refine and validate new concepts. Its computational and virtual-engineering tools can model chemistry changes and assess safety, performance and cost, sometimes reducing parts of the development cycle from months to days. That describes GM’s process; it is not independent evidence that a production cell has passed long-term durability or safety testing.

Which vehicles are expected to get it?

Large trucks and SUVs first

The initial target is GM’s largest electric trucks and SUVs sold under Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac. These vehicles need substantial battery capacity, so a chemistry that combines high energy density with lower cell cost could help narrow the price gap with gasoline-powered counterparts.

GM has not named specific production models, battery-pack sizes or trim levels that will receive LMR. It also has not said that every large electric truck or SUV will switch to the chemistry.

What is not yet promised

  • No LMR-powered production vehicle has been delivered based on the cited announcements.
  • GM has not published independently verified range, charging-speed, cycle-life or long-term safety results for a customer vehicle.
  • The manufacturing site and final commercial specifications remain undisclosed.

Can the battery really be cheaper?

The cost advantage comes from materials selection and manufacturing design. Manganese is generally more abundant and less expensive than nickel and cobalt, and GM says the module uses fewer parts. Together, those changes could reduce cell or pack costs.

However, “comparable cell cost” to LFP is a specific development-stage claim, not a published price. It does not establish the final cost of a complete battery pack, vehicle, warranty or charging system. Commodity prices, yield, plant scale, production tooling and validation requirements will determine the commercial result.

That target concerns supply-chain content, not a guarantee that every material in an LMR pack will be mined, refined and assembled in the United States or that the battery will qualify for every incentive. GM has not provided a final LMR plant location in the cited announcements.

What happens after an EV battery’s first life?

GM says its battery packs are supporting a Redwood Materials second-life microgrid in Sparks, Nevada. In a separate pilot concept, GM is working with utilities including PG&E in California on vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which can send stored EV energy back to the grid during periods of peak demand.

Those projects show how GM is exploring uses beyond vehicle propulsion. They do not demonstrate that an LMR pack will have a particular second-life value, V2G capability or utility approval; those outcomes depend on pack electronics, software, warranty terms and local grid rules.

What buyers should watch before treating LMR as a breakthrough

  • Independent testing: Look for verified range, charging, cycle-life and safety data from production-intent packs.
  • Commercial timing: A 2027 pilot and 2028 volume target can move as validation, plant construction or supply contracts change.
  • Pack-level economics: Cell-cost claims do not automatically translate into a lower vehicle price.
  • Model disclosures: GM still needs to identify which Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles will use LMR and provide usable-capacity and charging specifications.

For now, LMR is best understood as GM’s planned chemistry for making large electric trucks and SUVs more affordable without giving up as much range and performance as an LFP design might. The potential is significant, but the evidence currently consists of prototypes, company claims and a planned production path—not results from vehicles that customers can buy.
