The GeForce RTX 5070 is faster and more capable than the RTX 3070, but it is not an automatic upgrade. In a representative multi-generation test suite, it was about 20% faster at 1440p in conventional gaming; the gap varies by game and can shrink when a CPU limits performance. The 5070 makes a stronger case if you want ray tracing, newer DLSS features, or relief from the 3070’s 8GB VRAM ceiling. If your 3070 already meets your needs, especially at 1080p, the price of an upgrade may be hard to justify.

For a new build, the 5070 is generally the better of these two choices. But its original $549 MSRP is not a reliable guide to what it costs now: August 2026 reporting put the median price of Newegg listings roughly 36% above MSRP. At that level, compare higher-tier and 16GB alternatives before buying.

RTX 5070 vs. RTX 3070: specifications at a glance

Specification GeForce RTX 5070 GeForce RTX 3070 What it means
Architecture Blackwell Ampere The 5070 has newer rendering, AI, and media hardware.
GPU GB205 GA104 Different generations; core counts are not directly comparable.
CUDA cores 6,144 5,888 The modest count difference does not predict the real performance gap.
RT cores 48, fourth generation 46, second generation The 5070 is better equipped for current ray-tracing workloads.
Tensor cores 192, fifth generation 184, third generation The 5070 supports newer AI features.
Memory 12GB GDDR7 8GB GDDR6 Extra capacity gives the 5070 more headroom for demanding textures and effects.
Memory bus 192-bit 256-bit Bus width alone is misleading: the 5070’s GDDR7 provides much higher bandwidth.
Total graphics power 250W 220W The 5070 is faster but has a higher rated board-power figure.
Recommended system power 650W 650W NVIDIA’s stated baseline for both; PSU quality and the rest of the PC matter.
Launch MSRP $549 $499 Launch prices are historical, not current street-price guidance.
Launch period February/March 2025 availability October 2020 The 5070 is roughly four years newer.

Specifications are based on NVIDIA’s card comparison and its Blackwell architecture documentation. Partner cards can differ in clocks, cooling, dimensions, power limits, and connectors.

Do not infer a dramatic speed advantage from the CUDA-core count. Ampere and Blackwell cores are not interchangeable units of performance; architecture, clocks, memory, software, and power limits all affect results.

Gaming performance: a moderate raster uplift, a stronger feature jump

Conventional rasterized games

In games rendered without ray tracing or frame generation, the RTX 5070 is faster, but the uplift is not a universal multiplier. TechSpot’s representative generational comparison measured it at approximately 20% faster than the RTX 3070 at 1440p. That is one test suite, not a guarantee for every game: results change with resolution, settings, drivers, card model, and CPU.

At 1080p, a CPU bottleneck can narrow the difference, especially in esports and other high-frame-rate titles. At 4K, GPU load and memory pressure can expose larger differences in some games, but that does not make the 5070 a dependable native-4K card for every demanding title. See TechSpot’s RTX 70-series comparison for the test-suite context.

Ray tracing

The 5070’s newer RT hardware and AI features make it the stronger choice for ray-traced games. Tom’s Hardware reported roughly 70 FPS across its native 1440p ray-tracing test suite for the 5070; results depend on the games and settings in that suite, and demanding 4K ray tracing often calls for upscaling or frame generation. That figure is not a direct promise of the 5070’s lead over the 3070 in every title.

When reading comparisons, keep four different measurements separate:

  • Native rendering: Frames rendered at the selected output resolution without AI upscaling.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: The game renders at a lower internal resolution and uses AI upscaling to produce the output image.
  • Frame Generation: The GPU inserts synthesized frames between rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation (MFG): Supported RTX 50-series hardware can generate multiple frames for each rendered frame in compatible games.

Generated frames can make motion look smoother, but they are not equivalent to additional fully rendered frames for input response. Displayed FPS can rise without latency improving in proportion. Frame generation is most useful when the underlying rendered frame rate is already reasonably strong.

DLSS and feature support: what changes with Blackwell

The RTX 3070 supports DLSS Super Resolution and remains a capable RTX card; it is not cut off from all AI-assisted rendering. But it does not support the complete RTX 5070 feature set. The 5070 supports DLSS 4 features, including Multi Frame Generation in supported games, alongside newer Blackwell neural-rendering capabilities, RT and Tensor hardware, and updated video encoding and decoding.

NVIDIA’s launch announcement promoted “up to” 2× performance in selected DLSS 4 scenarios. That claim depends on supported games and generated frames; it does not mean the 5070 delivers twice the RTX 3070’s native raster performance across games. DLSS and frame-generation options require game support, compatible drivers, and appropriate in-game settings. Check each game’s options rather than assuming a feature is available everywhere. See NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 launch details.

The 5070 also has newer NVENC/NVDEC media hardware, including AV1 encoding support, which can matter for recording, streaming, and creative workflows. Whether that changes your results depends on the application and its hardware-acceleration support.

VRAM: 12GB is a real improvement, not a guarantee of longevity

The RTX 3070’s 8GB can be restrictive in some modern games and workloads. High-resolution textures, ray tracing, large environments, modded assets, and 1440p or 4K settings can use more memory than the card has available. The consequences are not always a simple drop in average FPS: a game may stutter, stream textures late, show pop-in, suffer poor one-percent lows, force lower texture settings, or—in severe cases—fail to load a setting reliably.

The 5070’s 12GB provides useful extra headroom, particularly at 1440p, but it is not “future-proof.” Some demanding games can exceed 12GB under 4K ray-traced settings. If 16GB or more is important for your games or professional GPU workloads, compare cards with that capacity rather than assuming 12GB will cover every use case.

For a 3070 owner, look at the games and settings you actually use. If you are already seeing texture compromises or stutter associated with memory pressure, capacity may be a more compelling reason to upgrade than the average-FPS gain. If you play at 1080p with high rather than ultra textures and have no problems, the extra memory may not transform your experience.

Power, fit, and compatibility

NVIDIA lists 250W total graphics power for the RTX 5070 and 220W for the RTX 3070. It recommends a 650W system power supply for each, but wattage alone does not establish compatibility: consider the PSU’s quality, age, available connectors, and the demands of the full system. The 5070’s higher rated power means you should not assume that newer automatically means lower absolute power draw, even if performance per watt may improve in a given workload.

Before buying a specific 5070, verify:

  • Power supply: Check the manufacturer’s recommendation for the exact card, the PSU’s quality, and its available PCIe power connections.
  • Connector: Card models can use different power arrangements; confirm whether the model needs an adapter or a compatible native connector.
  • Case clearance: Check card length, thickness, slot count, and clearance around front radiators, drive cages, and cables.
  • Airflow: Make sure the case can feed and exhaust air around the card.
  • Motherboard access: Confirm the card will not block a slot or interfere with other installed hardware.

Founders Edition and partner-board dimensions and connectors are not necessarily the same. Check the listing or manufacturer page for the exact model; NVIDIA’s specification comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for a partner card’s dimensions.

Prices and value in 2026

The RTX 5070 launched at $549. That is useful historical context, but not a statement of its current price. Tom’s Hardware reported in August 2026 that the median Newegg listing price was about 36% above MSRP—roughly $747 when calculated from the launch price. Individual models and listings may be lower or higher, so check live prices for the exact card and location before deciding.

At around $549, the 5070 is a defensible 1440p upgrade for someone who values its performance, features, and extra VRAM. At $650, compare the price against cards with more memory or greater performance before settling on it. Around $750, the case weakens: investigate higher-tier or 16GB alternatives available at that price, rather than treating the 5070 as the default. Current prices and inventory for those alternatives vary, so compare actual listings.

The RTX 3070 is now mainly a used-market purchase. Its original $499 launch MSRP does not tell you what a particular used card is worth, and available evidence does not support one reliable current used-market price. Condition, warranty, cooler, seller, repair history, and local availability all matter. A used 3070 should be substantially cheaper than a new current-generation card if you are accepting its 8GB limit and older feature set.

Which card fits your situation?

Your situation Better fit Why
New PC build, mainly 1440p RTX 5070, if competitively priced Higher performance, 12GB, and newer features.
RTX 3070 owner, satisfied at 1080p Keep the RTX 3070 The improvement may not be worth the upgrade cost, particularly at 60Hz.
RTX 3070 owner targeting high-refresh 1440p Consider RTX 5070 It is the stronger match, though the raster uplift is not a generational doubling.
Ray-tracing enthusiast RTX 5070 Newer RT hardware and DLSS 4/MFG support in compatible games.
Playing 4K at high settings Compare beyond both cards The 5070 can benefit from upscaling; neither is an ideal long-term choice for demanding native 4K, and 12GB may be limiting in some settings.
Creator or GPU-workload user RTX 5070 or a higher-memory option Newer media and AI capabilities help where software uses them; workloads that exceed 12GB may need more memory.
Budget buyer considering a used RTX 3070 RTX 3070 only at a suitably low price It remains capable, but condition, warranty, and 8GB VRAM risk belong in the price.

If buying a used RTX 3070, inspect it first

  • Ask for the exact model, proof of purchase, warranty status, and return terms.
  • Run a sustained game or benchmark and look for artifacting, crashes, or unstable performance.
  • Check core and hotspot temperatures, fan behavior, and unusual noise under load.
  • Where possible, verify VRAM stability and inspect the card for damage or evidence of repair or disassembly.
  • Ask about its history, including mining use, but treat claims as unverified unless supported by evidence.

A card with no return window or warranty should be priced accordingly. Do not pay close to new-card money for a used 3070 while also accepting its age, 8GB capacity, and older feature support.

Bottom line

The RTX 5070 wins overall: it is faster, has 12GB rather than 8GB, and supports newer ray-tracing, DLSS, and media features. For an RTX 3070 owner, however, the upgrade is most compelling when the older card’s VRAM or feature limits are already visible, or when ray tracing and supported frame generation matter to you. If the 3070 still delivers the experience you want, there is no need to replace it just because a newer generation exists. For a new build, buy the 5070 only at a sensible current price; at a steep markup, compare stronger and higher-memory alternatives.
