NVIDIA’s desktop GeForce RTX 40 SUPER lineup contains three cards: the RTX 4070 SUPER with 12GB, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER with 16GB, and the RTX 4080 SUPER with 16GB. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is the only model that gained VRAM capacity over its direct predecessor; the other two SUPER cards retain their predecessors’ capacity.

RTX 40 SUPER memory specifications at a glance

GPU VRAM Memory type Bus Effective speed Bandwidth Change versus predecessor
GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB GDDR6X 192-bit 21Gbps 504GB/s theoretical Same 12GB and 192-bit bus as RTX 4070
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16GB GDDR6X 256-bit 21Gbps 672GB/s Up from 12GB and 192-bit on RTX 4070 Ti

RTX 4070 SUPER: 12GB GDDR6X

The RTX 4070 SUPER has 12GB of GDDR6X memory on a 192-bit bus. That is the same capacity and bus width as the original RTX 4070, so it is not a 16GB graphics card.

At 21Gbps, its theoretical bandwidth is calculated as:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

21 × 192 ÷ 8 = 504GB/s

This is a theoretical memory-transfer figure, not a measured gaming-throughput result. The RTX 4070 SUPER is a strong fit for mainstream 1440p gaming and can handle many 4K games when settings and upscaling are chosen sensibly. Its 12GB capacity is less comfortable for maximum texture settings, demanding ray tracing, large mod packs, future games and professional applications that require large datasets.

For clarity, NVIDIA lists the non-SUPER RTX 4070 with either 12GB GDDR6 or 12GB GDDR6X, depending on the variant. The RTX 4070 SUPER is listed with 12GB GDDR6X. Do not assume every RTX 4070 uses identical memory chips.

RTX 4070 Ti SUPER: 16GB GDDR6X

The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is the lineup’s major memory upgrade. It has 16GB of GDDR6X on a 256-bit bus, compared with 12GB on a 192-bit bus for the non-SUPER RTX 4070 Ti.

The change provides:

  • 33% more VRAM capacity: 16GB instead of 12GB
  • A wider memory interface: 256-bit instead of 192-bit
  • Higher theoretical bandwidth: 672GB/s
  • More headroom for 4K textures, ray tracing, mods, content creation and some AI workloads

The bandwidth calculation is:

21 × 256 ÷ 8 = 672GB/s

The extra 4GB does not guarantee a specific frame-rate increase. Its value depends on whether a game or application was actually limited by VRAM, as well as the resolution, texture settings, ray-tracing workload and software.

RTX 4080 SUPER: 16GB with faster memory

The RTX 4080 SUPER is a 16GB GDDR6X card with a 256-bit bus. It does not have more VRAM than the original RTX 4080: both provide 16GB and use the same bus width.

The main memory-subsystem change is speed. NVIDIA specifies 23Gbps memory for the RTX 4080 SUPER, compared with 22.4Gbps for the launch-era RTX 4080 specification. Its theoretical bandwidth is:

23 × 256 ÷ 8 = 736GB/s

Faster memory can increase available bandwidth, but it does not create additional space for textures, models or other data. The RTX 4080 SUPER remains a higher-end option for 4K gaming, while the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER occupies a lower performance and price tier despite having the same 16GB capacity and 256-bit bus.

Capacity, bus width, speed and bandwidth are different

VRAM specifications are often reduced to a single capacity number, but each metric describes something different:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Capacity is how much data can reside in the graphics memory, including textures, geometry, frame buffers, video data and AI or professional workloads.
  • Bus width is the width of the connection between the GPU and its memory.
  • Memory speed is the effective data rate, expressed in gigabits per second.
  • Bandwidth is the theoretical rate at which data can move between the GPU and VRAM.

The standard calculation is memory speed × bus width ÷ 8. Capacity answers whether a workload fits; bandwidth helps determine how quickly data can be transferred. Neither metric alone determines overall performance. GPU compute resources, ray-tracing hardware, clocks, software and the workload also matter.

What 12GB and 16GB mean in practice

1440p gaming

The 12GB RTX 4070 SUPER is generally well matched to 1440p gaming, particularly with high rather than universally maximum texture settings. It also provides strong raster and ray-tracing performance for its class.

4K gaming

Both 12GB and 16GB cards can run 4K games, but the settings required vary by title. A 16GB card offers more room for high-resolution textures, demanding ray tracing and future software, while 12GB may require more compromises in heavier workloads.

DLSS and Frame Generation

DLSS can reduce rendering workload and memory pressure in some scenarios, but it does not turn 12GB of physical VRAM into 16GB. Frame Generation changes rendered-frame and latency characteristics; it does not expand the card’s physical memory capacity.

  • Boost Clock / Memory: 2625 MHz / 23 Gbps
  • Video Memory: 16GB GDDR6X
  • Memory Interface: 256-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 2 (v1.4a) / HDMI x 2 (2.1a)

Creator and AI workloads

Large 3D scenes, video projects, local AI models and other professional workloads can have application-specific VRAM requirements. A 16GB card provides more headroom, but it is not automatically sufficient for every AI or professional task. Check the software’s documented requirements and the size of the data or model being used.

Custom RTX 40 SUPER cards

Board partners including ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY and ZOTAC produced custom SUPER cards. A partner card can differ from NVIDIA’s reference design in several ways:

  • Factory-overclocked core or memory speed
  • Cooling system and fan arrangement
  • BIOS power limits
  • PCB design and power connector implementation
  • Card length, height and slot thickness
  • Display outputs, warranty and support

Those differences do not normally change the GPU class’s official VRAM capacity. An “OC” suffix usually indicates a factory overclock, not additional memory. Retail names such as “12G”, “16G”, “Gaming X”, “Windforce”, “Trinity” and “Founders Edition” should be checked against the exact product specification.

Before buying, verify the individual card’s dimensions, slot thickness, recommended power supply, connector requirements and warranty terms. Memory configuration alone cannot establish whether a card will fit or work properly in a particular system.

Which RTX 40 SUPER card should you choose?

  • Choose the RTX 4070 SUPER for primarily 1440p gaming, strong performance per dollar and a 12GB capacity that matches many mainstream workloads.
  • Choose the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER when 16GB of VRAM and a wider bus are important, especially for 4K textures, ray tracing, mods or longer-term headroom in the upper-midrange.
  • Choose the RTX 4080 SUPER for higher-end 4K performance when 16GB is sufficient and the price difference is justified by the rest of the card’s performance.
  • For professional or AI workloads, start with the application’s VRAM requirement rather than gaming benchmarks or capacity alone.

Pricing and buying cautions

NVIDIA’s historical US launch MSRPs were $599 for the RTX 4070 SUPER, $799 for the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and $999 for the RTX 4080 SUPER. These are January 2024 launch figures, not current September 2026 street prices.

The cards are no longer new-launch products, so new, used, refurbished and marketplace availability can vary by country and seller. NVIDIA’s official product directory is useful for specifications, but its shop fields should not be treated as a dependable live-market price feed. Retail listings, including partner-card listings on Newegg, can change and may involve third-party sellers.

For a used card, check the exact model and VRAM capacity, seller reputation, return window, warranty transferability, mining or heavy-use history, fan condition, physical damage, modifications, repasting and power-connector condition. Do not use a launch MSRP or a stale out-of-stock listing as evidence of a current deal.
