The RTX 3080 is generally faster, especially in ray tracing; the RX 7700 XT is newer, draws less power, and has 12GB of VRAM instead of the common RTX 3080’s 10GB. If prices are close, a new RX 7700 XT is usually the lower-risk buy. A healthy, substantially cheaper used RTX 3080 can be the better performance deal—particularly for ray tracing, DLSS, or CUDA-based work.
That verdict depends on which RTX 3080 you are considering, its condition and warranty, and the price you can actually buy each card for. The RTX 3080 also came in a less common 12GB version, so check the listing rather than assuming all RTX 3080s are the same.

Specifications are reference-level figures, not a promise that every partner board has the same clock speeds, power limit, connector, dimensions, or cooler. Nvidia lists both 10GB and 12GB RTX 3080 configurations; the 12GB version has a different core and memory configuration. Unless a listing explicitly says 12GB, assume it is the common 10GB model and verify the exact card. See the Nvidia RTX 3080 specifications and AMD RX 7700 XT specifications.
Gaming performance: close in raster, less close in ray tracing
In conventional rendering—often called rasterization—the two cards are in a similar performance class. Tom’s Hardware’s older eight-game aggregate suite measured the RTX 3080 at 117.0 fps versus 116.1 fps for the RX 7700 XT at 1080p Ultra, 96.4 versus 92.7 fps at 1440p Ultra, and 62.0 versus 51.5 fps at 4K Ultra. Its separate ray-tracing result was 54.1 versus 45.0 fps in favor of the RTX 3080. These are averages from that suite, not forecasts for every game or system. For 1080p, a fast processor can limit either card, particularly in high-refresh gaming, so a GPU average may not translate into the same lead on your system. At 1440p, expect a close matchup in many rasterized games, with individual titles favoring either brand. At 4K, the RTX 3080’s larger bandwidth and raw resources can help, but its 10GB memory capacity can become a constraint in demanding games and settings.
Tom’s newer GPU hierarchy uses 19 tests, including eight ray-tracing titles, and tests native resolution without DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or frame generation. That makes it useful for comparing baseline GPU performance, but it is not a measure of what every game delivers with upscaling enabled. Benchmark results also depend on drivers, game versions, settings, CPU, and the exact board tested. Don’t treat a single aggregate score as a universal percentage advantage.
Ray tracing, DLSS, and FSR
Choose the RTX 3080 if ray tracing is a priority. Its second-generation RT cores generally give it a clear advantage over the RX 7700 XT in demanding ray-traced games. The size of the gap varies with the game and effects used, but the Nvidia card is the stronger starting point for heavy lighting, reflections, or advanced global illumination. Path tracing can be demanding on both cards, so upscaling or reduced settings may still be necessary.
The RTX 3080 supports DLSS Super Resolution, which reconstructs an image from a lower internal render resolution. The RX 7700 XT supports AMD FSR and Radeon Super Resolution. Image quality depends on the game, implementation, output resolution, and chosen quality mode; neither label guarantees the same result in every title. For a fair comparison, keep native rendering separate from upscaled results and note the mode used.

Upscaling is not the same as frame generation. Upscaling renders fewer pixels and reconstructs the image; frame generation inserts additional frames, which can raise displayed frame rates but may introduce artifacts or add latency. The RTX 3080 supports DLSS Super Resolution, but it does not have the hardware generation associated with Nvidia’s later frame-generation features. Feature support varies by game and software version, so don’t buy either card assuming a particular upscaling or frame-generation option will be available everywhere.
VRAM: 12GB gives the Radeon more headroom
The RX 7700 XT’s 12GB is a practical advantage over the common 10GB RTX 3080, particularly at 1440p or 4K with very high-resolution textures, mods, large asset packs, or demanding ray-tracing settings. If a game exceeds available VRAM, average frame rates alone may not tell the whole story: stutter and inconsistent frame times can make play feel worse.
More VRAM does not automatically make the RX 7700 XT faster. If a game and its settings fit comfortably in 10GB, the RTX 3080 may still deliver higher performance. Lowering texture quality can also relieve a memory limit without replacing the card. The comparison changes for an RTX 3080 12GB, so verify the specific variant before weighing memory capacity.

Power, heat, and system fit
Nvidia’s reference RTX 3080 rating is 320W, compared with AMD’s 245W typical board power for the RX 7700 XT. Nvidia recommends a 750W system PSU, while AMD recommends at least 700W under its stated configuration. PSU quality, CPU choice, the rest of the system, and the exact graphics card all matter, so check the board maker’s requirements and your PSU’s connectors before buying.
The Radeon’s lower rated power generally means less heat has to be removed from the case and can make it easier to keep a system cool and quiet. It can also reduce electricity use, though the actual difference depends on games, usage hours, power limits, and local electricity prices. In Tom’s testing, the RX 7700 XT averaged 218W in its 1080p-medium suite and reached 239W at 4K Ultra; those measurements are test-specific, not guaranteed consumption for every game or model. Board power is not the same as wall power for the whole PC. Factory-overclocked cards and custom power limits can also change consumption. RTX 3080 connectors vary by model: the Founders Edition uses a 12-pin connector with an adapter, while many partner cards use conventional PCIe power connectors. Inspect the actual card, its supplied adapter, and your PSU cables; don’t assume all RTX 3080s have the same arrangement.
New RX 7700 XT or used RTX 3080?
This is not just a comparison of frames per second. A new RX 7700 XT typically offers a known condition and a retailer or manufacturer warranty, along with lower rated power and 12GB of memory. A used RTX 3080 may be faster, especially in ray tracing, but age, wear, seller terms, and prior maintenance become part of the price.

Before buying a used RTX 3080, ask for the exact model and proof that it runs reliably under a sustained gaming load. Check the seller’s return window and any remaining transferable warranty. Look for damaged power connectors, unusual fan noise, overheating, instability, or signs of poor repairs. Ask about thermal-pad or paste replacement if temperatures are a concern; a card needing service can erase a small purchase-price saving. Prior mining use alone does not prove a card is defective, but unknown history and no return protection increase the risk.
There is no dependable universal price cutoff: local supply, currency, taxes, condition, and warranty change the calculation. Compare actual checkout prices, not launch prices or a comparison site’s reference figures. The RTX 3080 discount should be large enough to compensate for used-card risk, higher power, and potentially shorter remaining coverage. A $50 saving may not be worthwhile if shipping, repair, electricity, or lack of returns offsets it.

If you need hardware AV1 encoding, the RX 7700 XT has it. Nvidia’s RTX 3080 supports NVENC and AV1 decoding, but not AV1 encoding according to the relevant generation’s specifications. That makes the AMD card worth considering for an AV1 streaming or recording workflow, provided your streaming software and platform support the format you intend to use.

CUDA- or OptiX-dependent applications, Nvidia-specific plugins, or workflows built around Nvidia features can make the RTX 3080 the safer choice. Other software may support both vendors or favor different hardware. Check the exact app, plugin, renderer, and export path you use rather than assuming one card wins every productivity task.

DisplayPort 2.1 on the RX 7700 XT is useful only when the monitor, cable, and desired display mode support it; it does not improve ordinary 1440p gaming by itself. The RTX 3080 Founders Edition has HDMI 2.1 and three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs, though partner-board outputs can differ.
Check alternatives before paying a premium
In 2026, these are older comparison cards, so their names alone do not make them good buys. Tom’s June 2026 hierarchy showed reference price figures of $449.99 for the RX 7700 XT and $699.99 for the RTX 3080. These are comparison-page price references, not guaranteed live US retail prices or a guide to local used-market value. Check current listings in your region and compare the full cost, including warranty and return terms.
Also compare a Radeon RX 7800 XT if you want a step up in AMD raster performance and 16GB of VRAM, and consider newer 16GB options such as the RX 9060 XT 16GB or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB when their actual prices are close. The same 2026 hierarchy listed comparison prices of $349.99 and $429.99, respectively; those figures are not live-price guarantees, and newer does not automatically mean faster in every workload. A discounted or used RTX 4070 may also be relevant if its price and feature set suit your games. Compare current independent benchmarks for the exact card and features you care about before choosing.

Don’t pay a premium for an RTX 3080 12GB without checking what that premium buys you, and don’t choose an RX 7700 XT priced close to an attractive RX 7800 XT or newer alternative without comparing performance and warranty. The RX 7700 XT launch review provides independent context, but launch positioning is not a substitute for today’s local pricing.

Bottom line: Buy the RX 7700 XT when it is near the price of a used RTX 3080, especially if you want a warranty, lower power use, or more VRAM. Buy the RTX 3080 when it is meaningfully cheaper in verified good condition and you value its ray tracing, DLSS, or CUDA advantages. In either case, compare actual local prices and the exact card—not just the GPU name.
