The “Gboard getting even more Material You” report refers to a 2021 Android 12-era redesign, not a newly confirmed 2026 release. 9to5Google found additional Material You styling in Gboard 10.9, including a circular keypress popup, rounded long-press menus, an updated symbols panel and a reorganized settings experience. The redesigned Theme page was reported as appearing in Gboard 10.9.04 beta, while the wider settings refresh was not confirmed as a universal stable rollout.
What changed in the reported redesign
The changes were primarily visual and organizational. They brought parts of Gboard closer to Android 12’s Material You language rather than changing how the keyboard predicts or enters text.
Keyboard-surface changes
- Circular keypress popup: The older rectangular popup above a pressed key was replaced by a rounder treatment. The pressed letter could remain visible on the underlying keyboard layer instead of being completely obscured.
- Rounded long-press menu: The menu associated with the comma/emoji key used a more pill-like container.
- Updated symbols panel: Long-pressing the period key opened a refreshed symbols panel with the same softer, rounded visual direction.
Redesigned Gboard preferences
The broader preferences screen adopted larger page headers, more prominent high-level switches and spacing closer to Android 12’s Settings app. The goal was easier scanning and stronger visual hierarchy, although larger cards and headings can also mean more scrolling.
The new Theme page
The Theme page was the clearest separately reported rollout. Its theme choices appeared as rounded cards, with a checkmark and perimeter outline identifying the selected option. A clearer System Auto preview showed how the keyboard could follow the system appearance. The page retained the same general four-section organization reported in the earlier design, so this was a presentation refresh rather than a new typing mode.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available evidence supports calling this a Material You visual refresh. It does not establish improvements to autocorrect, gesture-typing accuracy, typing latency, voice dictation, language support or clipboard behavior. Google’s current Play listing continues to advertise established capabilities such as themes, Glide Typing, voice typing, handwriting, emoji and GIF search, translation and multilingual typing, but does not attribute those features to this historical redesign.
The original report came from APK inspection and feature enablement. That can reveal work in progress, but it is not proof that every discovered screen will ship or appear on every phone. See the original 9to5Google report for the dated screenshots and rollout caveat.

What “[U]” means
The [U] marker is an update label attached to the article, not a Gboard feature. In this case, the update added reporting that the redesigned Theme page had started appearing in the beta channel with Gboard version 10.9.04. It does not mean that the complete preferences redesign was available to everyone.

Version and availability context
- The report was published on August 22, 2021, with original reporting dated August 5.
- It concerned the Android 12/Material You design period and Gboard 10.9-era builds.
- Gboard 10.9.04 beta was associated with the updated Theme page in the report.
- The timing of a broad stable rollout for the entire settings redesign was not established.
A current Play listing shows that Gboard remains actively updated, but it does not document a universal version number for this exact 2021 layout. Some features are also unavailable on Android Go devices, according to Google’s listing.

How to open Gboard settings now
Google’s current support instructions provide a route that works even when the interface does not match an old screenshot:
- Open an app with a text field, such as Gmail or Keep.
- Tap the field to display Gboard.
- Tap Open features menu at the top left.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Choose a category such as Glide typing, Text correction or Voice typing.
For theme controls through Android’s system settings, use Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Theme. Labels can vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google documents both routes in its Gboard settings guide and theme and preferences help page.

Why your phone may look different
Not seeing the reported screens does not necessarily indicate a problem. Differences can result from:
- your Android version;
- the installed Gboard version;
- beta versus stable distribution;
- Pixel, Samsung or another manufacturer’s system styling;
- regional or staged feature enablement; and
- later Gboard redesigns that replaced the original Android 12-era layout.
Update Gboard through Google Play, then check the Theme page separately from the main preferences page. A theme redesign may appear while the rest of Settings remains unchanged. There is no need to sideload an APK or clear Gboard data just to obtain a cosmetic interface; clearing data can reset preferences.

Bottom line
Gboard’s reported Material You update was mainly a visual and navigation refresh: rounder keypress and long-press surfaces, a cleaner symbols panel, larger settings headers and clearer theme selection. It should not be presented as evidence of a faster, more accurate or fundamentally different keyboard, and the exact 2021 beta layout may not exist in a current build.
