Gamepadla’s Polling tool can estimate how often a controller’s changing input reports reach a PC. It is useful for comparing a controller’s wired, Bluetooth, and receiver modes, but it does not measure the full delay from a physical press to an on-screen response. For a meaningful result, test each connection separately, move a stick continuously, and compare repeated runs rather than quoting the highest number.
What Gamepadla measures—and what it does not
Polling rate is the approximate frequency at which a controller reports updated state to the host. Gamepadla’s Polling utility estimates that frequency from the intervals between successive changes in analog-stick position. Its result is therefore an operating-system-observed report rate, affected by the controller, connection, host, and test software—not a direct electrical measurement of the controller alone. The project describes the tool and its method at the Polling repository.
- Polling rate: how frequently reports are observed at the host.
- Refresh interval: elapsed time between observed reports. A shorter interval corresponds to a higher rate.
- Jitter and outliers: variation in report timing and unusually long intervals.
- Latency-like or synthetic values: timing-derived diagnostics; they are not necessarily physical button latency.
- End-to-end input latency: delay from a physical action through the controller, operating system, game, rendering, and display. The polling test does not measure this complete path.
Gamepadla’s controller pages distinguish software polling diagnostics from hardware-based latency methods. Prometheus 82 and GPDL are separate specialist approaches, not requirements for running the Polling utility. See Gamepadla’s Xbox One controller entry and its explanation of measurement methods.

What you need
The simplest documented setup is a Windows PC, a controller recognized by the operating system, and Gamepadla’s Polling download. Get the current download from Gamepadla’s official software page; filenames and interface labels can change. The project documents XInput and DirectInput support and lists controller families including XInput, Switch, DualShock, and DirectInput devices. It also describes testing by cable, Bluetooth, or receiver, but recognition depends on the controller and the input path exposed to Windows.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
For a clean baseline, connect by USB directly to the PC where practical. Close remappers, overlays, capture utilities, and unnecessary background apps; avoid a USB hub if you can. For wireless testing, charge the controller and note whether the connection is Bluetooth or a proprietary receiver. Record the firmware, operating-system build, connection type, and test-tool version. Gamepadla entries record similar details, as shown in its Xbox Core and BIGBIG WON Blitz 2 TMR entries.
How to run the Polling test
- Open the official Gamepadla software page and download the Polling utility offered there. Avoid third-party mirrors.
- Connect the controller in the mode you want to test: USB, Bluetooth, or its wireless receiver. Confirm Windows recognizes it.
- Launch Polling. If the version offers device or stick selection, choose the controller and stick to test. Selection and automatic-detection behavior have changed between releases; consult the interface in your version. The release notes document changes over time.
- Move the selected stick smoothly in a continuous circle near the edge of its range. Do not leave it stationary or make only occasional short movements: the test needs changing stick samples.
- Keep moving until the test completes, then record the displayed statistics: median and average rate, interval values, jitter, and any outliers or late reports shown.
- Repeat at least three times. Use the typical or median result across runs, not the single most favorable run.
- Reconnect in each other mode of interest and repeat. Treat wired, Bluetooth, and receiver results as separate configurations.
The project documents continuous circular stick movement as the way to generate samples. Keep the motion smooth and avoid forcing the stick hard against its mechanical stop; inconsistent movement can make a run less repeatable.
How to read the numbers
The nominal relationship is polling rate (Hz) ≈ 1,000 ÷ refresh interval (ms). These are interval conversions, not guarantees of controller-to-screen response time.

| Polling rate | Nominal interval |
|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms |
| 1,000 Hz | 1 ms |
| 2,000 Hz | 0.5 ms |
| 4,000 Hz | 0.25 ms |
| 8,000 Hz | 0.125 ms |
Read the distribution rather than treating one statistic as the whole result:
- Median rate is a useful indication of a typical report frequency. Recent Gamepadla database entries show median alongside average rate; see the Blitz 2 TMR entry.
- Average rate is also useful, but occasional long intervals can pull it down more strongly than they affect the median.
- Minimum interval is a best-case observation, not evidence that the controller sustains that rate.
- Maximum interval and outliers can reveal occasional delays or irregular delivery.
- Jitter indicates how consistent the observed timing is. A high rate with substantial timing variation may be less informative than a lower, steadier result.
There is no universal “good” polling-rate threshold. Compare the result with the controller’s stated specification for that particular connection mode, then consider stability and the game’s input sampling, display refresh, and controller latency. An older controller around 125 Hz may be behaving normally; a controller advertised at 1,000 Hz deserves closer checking if repeated tests consistently land near 125 or 250 Hz. Higher Hz shortens the nominal report interval, but does not by itself prove lower button or stick latency.
Compare connection modes fairly
Run the same procedure separately for wired, Bluetooth, and receiver modes. A manufacturer’s maximum may apply only to a specified wired or receiver mode, firmware setting, or ideal condition; do not apply it automatically to Bluetooth or every game. Gamepadla’s database entries illustrate that results can differ by connection mode, and the project cautions that OS-level polling figures fluctuate. See the Xbox Core entry and the Xbox One entry.

| Configuration | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Port, cable if relevant, input API, firmware, tool version | Useful baseline; use a direct port where practical. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth connection, battery state, firmware, input API | Do not assume it matches the wired specification or receiver mode. |
| Wireless receiver | Receiver connection, port or hub use, firmware, input API | Keep distinct from Bluetooth even if both are wireless. |
For each configuration, log three or more runs and preserve the individual results as well as the representative median. A compact report can use this template:

Run 1 (median / average / jitter):
Run 2 (median / average / jitter):
Run 3 (median / average / jitter):
Representative result:
Outliers or other notes:
Why your result may differ from the advertised rate
- Connection and firmware mode: the advertised maximum may not apply to the selected wireless mode, firmware, or configuration.
- Input API and virtual devices: Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, x360ce, emulator layers, and similar software can expose a virtual controller. The test may then observe that layer rather than the physical controller’s native path. Close remappers for a direct baseline; if you also test with one enabled, label that result separately.
- Host and event processing: the Polling project notes that CPU speed and Pygame/event processing can affect observed measurements. Treat the result as behavior through the tester and host system, not a laboratory-grade electrical measurement of the controller. The related Gamepadla+ project makes a similar distinction.
- Wireless conditions and power saving: interference, battery-saving behavior, or a receiver connected through a hub can contribute to lower or less consistent results.
- Test motion and sampling: stationary, intermittent, or inconsistent stick movement may not generate a useful continuous sample stream.
- Different statistics: an average can be lower than a median when there are late reports; compare like with like across runs.
A frequent report rate also cannot remove sensor scan time, firmware processing, button debounce, transport delay, game input sampling, rendering, or display latency. It is one part of the input path, not a summary of all of it.
Which Gamepadla tool should you use?
For a polling-rate benchmark, start with Polling. Gamepadla’s software page also lists tools with different purposes; they are not interchangeable:

See the official tools page for the current list. If you want command-line automation or JSON output, Gamepadla+ is a separate open-source alternative. Its documented commands include:
gamepadla list
gamepadla test
gamepadla test --stick right
gamepadla test --out data.json
gamepadla test --upload
Its GUI workflow is to run gamepadla, connect the controller and click Refresh, click Test, then rotate the selected stick slowly near the edge. Gamepadla+ documents XInput and DirectInput support and offers installation through uv as well as Windows binaries; consult its PyPI project page and repository for current installation details. It is a fork, not necessarily the same build or calculation as the official Polling download.
A browser gamepad tester can be convenient for checking whether a browser sees a controller, but browser timing, background tabs, browser APIs, and OS scheduling make it less suitable for a controlled benchmark. Gamepadla’s site includes web testing at its test page; treat it as a convenience check rather than assuming it replaces the downloadable utility.

Troubleshooting
The controller is not detected
- Disconnect and reconnect it; for a wired controller, try another cable or USB port.
- Confirm that Windows recognizes the controller.
- Check that the controller is in the intended XInput, DirectInput, or console mode.
- Close remappers and virtual-controller software, then restart the tester.
- Try another connection mode or, if the official utility still does not recognize it, the separate Gamepadla+ implementation.
Failure in one mode or through one input API does not establish that the controller is universally incompatible.
The result is much lower than expected
Check whether you are testing Bluetooth when the advertised figure applies to wired or receiver mode, whether a virtual controller is selected, whether the receiver is behind a hub, and whether the stick was moving continuously. Compare median with average and inspect long intervals before deciding the controller is underperforming.
Runs vary substantially
Repeat the trials and compare their distributions. Check for wireless interference, low battery or power saving, CPU load, background software, USB power-management behavior, and inconsistent stick motion. Do not use one unusually high run as the representative result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows security software blocks the download
The Polling repository’s release notes say the October 2, 2025 release v1.3.1.4 added a digital certificate intended to improve antivirus trust. Release tracks may differ: Gamepadla database entries from June 2026 identify Polling v2.0.2.6, while the repository lists v1.3.1.4 as its latest GitHub release in the cited release information. Do not treat those identifiers as the same distribution. Download from Gamepadla’s official page or its official repository releases, not a mirror, and check the release source if Windows raises a warning.
An upload fails
An upload problem is not a failed controller test. Save a local result where the tool allows it, retry when your network is available, or record the statistics manually. The original project documents result submission and the releases include a fix related to sending data when an internet connection is unavailable; see the release notes.
When polling is not enough
If the question is how long a physical button press takes to reach software or an on-screen response, polling rate is the wrong result to treat as the answer. Use a hardware-based latency method, such as Gamepadla’s Prometheus 82 or GPDL approach, where that level of measurement is needed. These specialist methods are distinct from the simple software download; their current tool descriptions are on Gamepadla’s software page. For ordinary comparisons, use Polling as a repeatable diagnostic of observed report frequency and state the connection and host conditions alongside the number.
