The message usually means NVIDIA cannot find or apply an Optimal Playable Settings profile for the game—not that your graphics card has failed. Start by moving from legacy GeForce Experience to NVIDIA App, patching the game, launching it once, checking support, and adding the correct installation folder to the app’s scan locations.
What “This game cannot be optimized” means
NVIDIA’s optimizer is a profile-based recommendation system. It reads a supported game’s configuration files and combines that profile with information about your GPU, CPU, display and other hardware. The result is a suggested balance between image quality and performance, not a guarantee of maximum FPS or the best settings for every player. NVIDIA describes this approach in its Optimal Playable Settings overview.
| What you see | What it usually indicates | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| The game is missing entirely | NVIDIA App has not detected the installation, or the title is not supported. | Check support status, add the library folder under Settings > Scan Locations, then rescan. |
| The game appears, but Optimize is unavailable | The title may have no NVIDIA profile, or the profile cannot be retrieved. | Patch and launch the game once, update the driver, then retry in NVIDIA App. |
| Optimization applies, but performance is poor | The profile worked but does not suit your frame-rate target, workload, laptop limits or visual preferences. | Revert if possible and tune settings manually. |
| Every game fails | An app, driver, account/service or legacy-client problem is more likely than universal lack of support. | Use NVIDIA App, update the driver and submit in-app feedback if the issue continues. |
Use NVIDIA App instead of relying on old GeForce Experience
NVIDIA now directs remaining GeForce Experience users to upgrade to NVIDIA App. NVIDIA warns that older GeForce Experience versions may not update automatically and that some of the legacy service infrastructure would eventually be shut down; the notice does not establish a specific shutdown date.

Follow this troubleshooting order
1. Update the game
Install the latest patch through Steam, Epic Games, the Xbox app or the title’s own launcher. NVIDIA’s support guidance says its recommended settings target the latest official game version. A newly patched game can also change its configuration format before NVIDIA publishes a matching profile.
2. Launch the game once
- Start the game from its normal launcher.
- Wait until the main menu appears.
- Allow first-run setup, shader compilation or introductory configuration to finish.
- Exit through the game’s normal quit command.
- Reopen NVIDIA App and try the game again.
NVIDIA says a first launch often creates the configuration files that the optimizer needs. Its direct guidance is in Why does GeForce Experience say my game can’t be optimized?.
3. Confirm that NVIDIA supports the title
Open NVIDIA App’s games or graphics area and search for the title. If it is absent, check NVIDIA’s supported-game information before treating the missing entry as an installation fault. Support is per game: a title can be visible to NVIDIA’s overlay or detected as an executable while still lacking an Optimal Playable Settings profile. NVIDIA has explained this per-game coverage in its developer forum discussion.
If NVIDIA has not created a profile, no local reinstall, executable shortcut or registry edit can manufacture one. Manual tuning is the correct solution.

4. Add the installation directory to Scan Locations
For a supported game that does not appear:
- Open NVIDIA App.
- Open Settings.
- Find Scan Locations.
- Add the folder containing the game installation.
- Trigger a rescan and refresh the game list.
NVIDIA’s detection instructions are documented at GeForce Experience can’t find my games. Add the installation directory rather than guessing at a single executable. The correct folder might be a Steam library on another internal drive, an Epic Games directory, an Xbox/Microsoft Store location, an external drive or a custom path such as D:Games. Microsoft Store installations can have different folder permissions, and manually copied or portable games may not match NVIDIA’s expected layout.
Adding a scan location can fix detection; it cannot guarantee that the Optimize control will appear if the profile itself is missing.
5. Update the NVIDIA driver
In NVIDIA App, open Drivers and install the current Game Ready or Studio driver that fits your workload. You can also use NVIDIA’s official driver page. Restart Windows if the game launcher or installer requests it, then retry. An update is an official diagnostic step, not a promise that every missing profile will return.

When the game is listed but settings cannot be retrieved
After the game has been patched and launched once, retry in NVIDIA App. If the error remains, consider title-specific causes: the installed build may be newer than NVIDIA’s profile, a launcher may use multiple executables, mods may have changed configuration files, cloud synchronization may overwrite local settings, or a crash may have reset the game into safe mode.

Test once with recording software, overlays and other third-party background tools closed. NVIDIA also recommends checking third-party applications when optimized performance is poor; its guidance is available in My game runs poorly after it’s been optimized. Do not permanently disable Windows security. If the profile still cannot be retrieved, use the NVIDIA App feedback control and include the game name, launcher, game version, driver version and exact message.
If optimization works but lowers FPS
Save or photograph the original graphics settings before applying a profile. NVIDIA’s recommendations aim for a broad quality/performance compromise and do not know whether you prioritize competitive latency, ray-traced image quality, streaming headroom or a quiet laptop.
If the current app offers Revert, use it. Otherwise, restore your notes and set a realistic frame-rate target for the monitor. A desktop GPU and a thermally limited laptop can receive different practical results from the same nominal recommendation.

Manual settings when no profile exists
Manual tuning is often faster than trying to force an unsupported title into NVIDIA’s system:

- Choose the display’s native resolution, or a deliberate resolution scale.
- Set a frame-rate target appropriate for the monitor and workload.
- Reduce the most expensive options first: ray tracing, reflections, volumetric effects, shadows, ambient occlusion, then crowd or foliage density.
- Keep texture quality as high as available VRAM allows; textures and lighting effects have different performance costs.
- Change one setting at a time and record the result.
- Use the game’s benchmark, when available, and repeat the same scene or route.
- Watch FPS and frame time together, along with GPU utilization, VRAM use and temperatures.
NVIDIA’s graphics and performance guide illustrates the trade-offs among reflections, volumetric lighting, anti-aliasing and texture resolution. Its example gains come from Control and are not universal results for other games.

Only one game fails
Suspect support coverage, a missing or outdated profile, a game-patch mismatch or unusual configuration-file behavior. Repeating a full NVIDIA reinstall is unlikely to create a title-specific profile.
Every game fails
Focus on the legacy GeForce Experience transition, NVIDIA App installation, driver state or service/account communication. Move to NVIDIA App, update the driver and report the pattern through feedback rather than assuming every installed game is unsupported.
The title uses mods or multiple launchers
Temporarily test the unmodified game and launch it through its standard executable path. Mods, alternate executables and cloud-synced configuration can prevent a profile from matching the files NVIDIA expects.

The game is on Xbox/Microsoft Store or an external drive
Add the library’s installation directory under Scan Locations, but recognize that protected folders and external-drive availability can affect detection. If the game remains absent, manual in-game settings may be the only practical path.
What not to try first
- Do not edit the Windows registry for a missing profile.
- Do not delete random NVIDIA folders or caches.
- Do not change DNS settings without evidence of a network-specific failure.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security.
- Do not install unofficial “optimized” configuration packs.
- Do not roll back a driver solely because NVIDIA lacks a profile for one title.
- Do not assume adding an executable manually can make an unsupported game supported.
NVIDIA’s documented sequence is simpler: update the game, run it once, verify support, correct the scan location, update the driver, retry in NVIDIA App and report persistent failures.
When there is no PC-side fix
If the game is unsupported or NVIDIA’s profile is unavailable, the message is describing a coverage limitation rather than a broken graphics card. Use the manual workflow above and benchmark against your own frame-rate and image-quality goals. Buying a new GPU will not create a missing NVIDIA profile; consider hardware only after repeatable testing shows that the current GPU, VRAM, CPU or thermals cannot meet your chosen target.
