Samsung’s thinner Galaxy Z Flip 8 is no longer a next-year expectation: it was announced on July 22, 2026, and went on sale in the U.S. on August 7. The U.S. model is 0.6 mm thinner when folded and 7 grams lighter than the Flip 7, but the changes are incremental. Its biggest upgrade is a new U.S. processor, while the battery capacity and core camera hardware remain familiar—and the starting price is $100 higher.
How much thinner is the Galaxy Z Flip 8?
Samsung’s published measurements show a real, but modest, reduction compared with the Galaxy Z Flip 7:

That is 0.4 mm thinner unfolded (about 6.2%), 0.6 mm thinner folded (about 4.4%), and 7 grams lighter (about 3.7%). The 6.1 mm headline applies when the phone is open and excludes the main-screen frame; it is not the thickness you put in a pocket. Folded, the phone is 13.1 mm thick before adding a case. Samsung’s specifications list both sets of dimensions.

In everyday use, expect a small improvement in pocket bulk and hand feel, not a dramatically different device. A protective case can easily diminish the practical value of a 0.6 mm reduction.

What changed besides the slimmer body?
The U.S. Galaxy Z Flip 8 combines its lighter frame with a new processor, updated software and a larger cover display. Its main screen is a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. The 4.1-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow supports 60Hz or 120Hz, giving users more room to interact with supported functions without opening the phone.
- Processor: The U.S. model uses Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Samsung’s global specification lists Exynos 2600 for some markets, so the U.S. chip should not be assumed worldwide.
- Software and FlexWindow: Samsung lists Android 17 with One UI 9 and expanded FlexWindow features. Now Brief and Gemini Intelligence are among the promoted AI capabilities; availability and functionality can depend on region, supported apps, accounts and software updates.
- Build: Samsung describes changes to the hinge and frame materials. Those design claims do not establish long-term repairability or repair cost, and they should not be treated as a substitute for independent durability testing.
- Colors: U.S. options include Graphite, Cream and Pink, plus Mint exclusive to Samsung’s online store.
The trade-offs: battery, charging and cameras
The slimmer body did not bring a larger battery. The Flip 8 has a 4,300 mAh typical-capacity battery, the same capacity listed for the Flip 7. Samsung advertises up to 31 hours of continuous video playback, but that is a manufacturer test claim, not a promise of that much mixed-use battery life. Wired charging is 25W, with no major speed increase indicated by the available launch specifications.
The rear cameras are a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization and a 12MP ultrawide; the front camera is 10MP. This is broadly familiar hardware rather than a camera-system overhaul. Samsung says processing and its ProVisual Engine have improved, but that claim alone does not establish how much better photos look in everyday use. Hands-on coverage likewise describes the camera hardware as essentially unchanged and notes that real-world testing is needed to judge image-quality gains.
U.S. price and availability
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is available in the U.S. following its August 7, 2026 general release. Unlocked list prices are $1,199.99 for 256GB and $1,399.99 for 512GB, with 12GB of RAM. The base price is $100 above the Flip 7’s launch price. Check Samsung’s U.S. product page for current offers; trade-in credits and carrier promotions can change the effective price, but they are conditional and are not the same as the unlocked list price.

The 512GB configuration costs $200 more than the 256GB model, so choose it if you know you need the extra space rather than assuming it is a better-value upgrade. The same caution applies to launch promotions bundled with services: Samsung’s launch material offered new Galaxy Z buyers a six-month Google AI Pro trial, including 5TB of storage. That is a time-limited offer, not a permanent included phone benefit; check eligibility and terms before counting it toward the phone’s value.

For most Flip 7 owners paying full price, the case is weak. The Flip 8 is a refinement focused on performance and portability, not a comprehensive generational overhaul. Its folded thickness drops by less than a millimeter, its cameras remain similar on paper, and its battery capacity and wired charging are unchanged—while the list price rose by $100.
- Upgrade is easier to justify if you want the U.S. Snapdragon processor for demanding games, multitasking or AI features; value the larger FlexWindow; or can get a strong trade-in or carrier offer.
- Keep the Flip 7 if it already handles your messaging, social apps and photography well, or if you were hoping for a major camera, battery or charging improvement.
- From a Flip 6 or older: The newer processor, display experience and thinner, lighter design may make the jump more compelling, but weigh the actual promotional price against how well your current phone works.
- First-time foldable buyers: The Flip 8 brings Samsung’s newest U.S. clamshell hardware, but consider whether compact foldability and the cover screen matter more to you than battery capacity, charging or camera hardware.
- Battery-first buyers: The unchanged 4,300 mAh capacity is a reason to compare conventional phones or larger foldables before choosing a clamshell.
