The US Galaxy S26 Ultra does not have the built-in magnets needed for MagSafe-style Qi2 attachment. It can still charge wirelessly on a compatible flat Qi pad, but you need a compatible magnetic case for snap-on Qi2 chargers, magnetic mounts and battery packs. Samsung advertises wireless charging up to 25W; that is a maximum capability, not a guaranteed speed with every case and charger.
What “no built-in magnets” means
The S26 Ultra lacks the magnetic alignment array that lets a charger or accessory snap into place on a bare phone. Independent launch coverage describes its Qi2 implementation as case-based: the phone supports Qi2 charging, while a compatible case supplies the magnetic alignment. SamMobile’s report on the S26’s Qi2 magnets and 9to5Google’s charging coverage make that distinction.
That is different from saying the phone cannot charge wirelessly. The magnets are for attachment and alignment; wireless power transfer is a separate capability. Put the bare phone on a compatible flat Qi charging pad and it can charge, though you may need to position it carefully.
“Qi2,” “Qi2 Ready,” and “MagSafe-compatible” are not interchangeable promises. For this phone, think of a magnetic Qi2 setup as three parts: S26 Ultra + correctly designed magnetic case + compatible charger. The charging standard and the magnets solve related but distinct problems.

Do you need a magnetic case?

Without the case, a magnetic charger might still transfer power if you manually line up the coils, but it will not reliably hold the phone in place. That makes a vertical stand or car mount especially risky: attachment can be weak, the phone can slide, and poor alignment can interrupt charging. A charger that sticks to the phone is not, by itself, proof that the phone is receiving a particular wattage.
Samsung’s US magnetic case options
Samsung lists Clear, Silicone, Slim and Rugged Magnet Case options for the S26 Ultra. Its US support page describes the magnet cases as supporting magnetic accessories and wireless charging up to 25W. A regular protective or wireless-charging-compatible case is not necessarily a magnetic case: check for an integrated magnet ring and explicit S26 Ultra compatibility. Samsung’s S26 accessories and charging guidance distinguishes its magnet accessories from other cases.

The “Clear Magnet Case” is a specific magnetic model; do not assume Samsung’s regular Clear Case includes magnets. Samsung also lists a Qi2 25W Wireless Magnet Charger, which still needs the case-based magnetic alignment on this phone.

Samsung advertises up to 25W wireless charging for the S26 Ultra with compatible equipment. “Up to” is a peak capability, not a promise that every Qi2 pad, third-party magnetic case or charging session will deliver 25W. The charger’s own maximum output is not necessarily the rate the phone negotiates.

Charging speed can vary with the charger and its power adapter, case design and thickness, coil alignment, battery level, temperature and software. Heat, background activity, foreign material between the phone and pad, or a case that positions the ring incorrectly can also affect performance. Do not assume that a case labeled “MagSafe-compatible” guarantees Samsung’s advertised 25W rate.
Check fit, camera clearance and S Pen behavior
- Buy for the exact phone. An S26 or S26+ case is not an S26 Ultra case; the camera layout and dimensions differ.
- Check the magnet position. A generic ring stuck to a case may sit off the charging coil, causing poor alignment or inconsistent charging.
- Check camera clearance. The Ultra’s camera housing can collide with the edge of a battery pack or stand. Samsung says its battery-pack design uses a top-corner shape to avoid camera interference; other accessories may not. Do not assume an accessory sized for an iPhone will fit the Ultra safely.
- Test the S Pen. The S Pen’s electromagnetic hardware is not the same thing as a Qi2 alignment ring. Magnetic cases and attached accessories can present compatibility risks, but that does not mean every magnetic case disables the S Pen. Check the case maker’s guidance and test writing and recognition; remove the accessory if performance becomes unreliable.
- Read the charging claim carefully. Look for explicit S26 Ultra fit, integrated magnets and a stated charging rate—not just “wireless charging compatible.” A case may attach to accessories yet fail to support the phone’s highest charging mode.
Samsung’s reported explanation for leaving magnets out was its goal of making the S26 series thinner and lighter, as covered by 9to5Google. That is an attributed design rationale, not proof that internal magnets were technically impossible. The omission is a design choice, not evidence of a defect.

Quick decision
- Choose a magnetic case if you want snap-on charging, a magnetic car mount, a desk stand, a battery pack or easier alignment.
- You can skip one if you use a flat Qi pad, charge by USB-C, and do not need magnetic accessories. You will still need to position the phone on a wireless pad yourself.
For US buyers, Samsung listed the S26 Ultra starting at $1,299.99 before trade-in, but the phone’s price does not include the convenience of a built-in magnetic array. Samsung’s US support page lists the box contents as the phone, a USB-C 3A charging cable and a SIM ejector tool; do not expect a magnetic case in the box. Prices, included items and accessory availability can vary by market.
