Short answer: The Galaxy S25 is a clear upgrade from the S22, a worthwhile-but-optional move from the S23, and a modest refinement over the S24. Its newer processor, lighter body and longer remaining support runway matter more than any leap in standard-model camera hardware. If you own an S24, keep it unless the S25’s newer features matter to you or a trade-in makes the net cost unusually low. If you are buying new, compare the S25 with a discounted S24 rather than assuming the newest model is automatically the best value.

The S25 and S24 have the same basic compact-phone proposition: a 6.2-inch-class display, 4,000mAh battery and similar rear-camera arrangement. The S25 is 5g lighter and 0.4mm thinner, and it moves to the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. Samsung says the newer platform provides more processing capacity for AI and camera work, but that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark. The S24’s processor also varies by market, so an S24 owner’s performance comparison depends partly on which regional model they have.

For ordinary messaging, browsing and streaming, the screen size and battery capacity are not compelling reasons to switch. The S25’s practical advantages are newer silicon, a lighter body, updated processing and AI features, and a later start to its support period. Samsung announced seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for both generations, so the S25 does not have a longer policy; it has more time remaining because it launched later. If your S24 works well, keep it unless a specific S25 feature or a favorable trade-in changes the arithmetic.
Galaxy S25 vs. S23: a more noticeable generational step
The S25 adds a tenth of an inch to the listed display size, raises typical battery capacity from 3,900mAh to 4,000mAh, and is about 5g lighter. Its processor is two generations newer than the S23’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. That gives demanding games, multitasking and on-device AI more headroom, although there is no need to expect every everyday task to feel dramatically different.
The S23 remains a capable phone, and the standard S25’s camera hardware is not a wholesale change. An upgrade makes more sense if you want the newer platform, a longer remaining update runway, the larger display, or newer computational photography and AI tools. If your S23’s battery and performance still meet your needs, its camera output is acceptable and you do not care about the new features, keeping it is reasonable.

Galaxy S25 vs. S22: the strongest upgrade case
Four generations bring a more substantial change: the S25 has a newer processor platform, a larger listed display, a 300mAh increase in typical battery capacity, a lighter chassis and a much later support horizon. The S22’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or regional Exynos chip is considerably older, and an S22 that has been used for years may also have a worn battery. The S25’s newer processing and software tools are another step forward, although the standard camera arrangement has not changed as dramatically as the processor.
If your S22 feels slow, runs hot during demanding use, has declining battery life or is nearing the end of the support period you need, the S25 is a strong replacement. If you only use basic communication and media apps, the difference may not justify replacing a healthy phone at any price; compare the net cost with the value of keeping or selling the S22.
What changed in the cameras?
The standard S25 retains a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, alongside a 12MP front camera. The S24 has a broadly similar camera configuration. Samsung presents the S25’s next-generation ProVisual Engine and image processing as improvements to detail, low-light video and editing, but without independent comparative testing it is better to treat those as claimed processing gains, not proof of a dramatic image-quality jump.

Megapixel counts alone do not determine photo quality: processing, optics, sensor size, lighting and motion all matter. The S25 can benefit from newer processing without having a fundamentally new standard-model camera system. For S22 owners, newer processing and tools may make the camera experience more consistent; for S23 owners, the gains are more about computation and features than a changed lens lineup; for S24 owners, camera hardware alone is a weak reason to upgrade.
The S25 Ultra is a different case. Its 50MP ultrawide replaces the S24 Ultra’s 12MP ultrawide, and the Ultra also has a 6.9-inch QHD+ display and S Pen support. It is the S25-family choice for buyers who specifically want the broadest camera system, zoom flexibility and stylus. That ultrawide hardware change does not apply to the standard S25.
Battery and charging: capacity is only part of the story
The base S25 and S24 both have a 4,000mAh typical-capacity battery; the S23 has 3,900mAh and the S22 3,700mAh. Samsung rates the S25 for up to 29 hours of video playback, a controlled manufacturer estimate rather than a promise of that much mixed-use time. Real endurance varies with battery age, signal strength, 5G use, screen brightness, gaming, camera recording and other workloads.

Any S25 endurance improvement over an S24 is more likely to come from processor and software efficiency than a bigger battery. The base model is not a charging-speed breakthrough either. If a larger battery and screen matter more than compactness, the S25+ has a 4,900mAh battery and 6.7-inch QHD+ display; compare its size and price as well as its capacity before choosing it.

The S25 launched with Android 15 and One UI 7. Samsung promises seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S25 series. The S24 has the same headline seven-year commitment, while the S23 and S22 began their support clocks earlier under different policies. The important comparison is therefore remaining support for your exact model and region, not simply the number seven. Samsung’s US page lists security support for the referenced S25 model through January 31, 2032; check the relevant regional product page for local details. Update timing can vary by carrier and market.

Some Galaxy AI experiences are expected to reach other Galaxy devices, so do not assume every named feature is exclusive to the S25. Availability can depend on model, One UI version, language, region, Samsung or Google account, and whether processing uses the cloud. Samsung also says its basic Galaxy AI features are free, but terms and availability may vary. Consider whether you actually use summaries, writing assistance, editing or cross-app commands rather than choosing by feature count.

S25, S25+ or S25 Ultra?

The S25+ is more than a bigger base S25: its display resolution and battery position make it a separate choice. The S Pen is available only on the Ultra, not the S25 or S25+. Samsung’s S25 series announcement outlines the family display sizes; its specification sheet covers the model distinctions.
Which Galaxy should you buy or keep?
- Galaxy S22 owner: Upgrade if battery wear, slowdowns, support longevity or demanding use are concerns. This is the strongest case for moving to the base S25.
- Galaxy S23 owner: Upgrade if the newer processor, AI tools, display or longer remaining support matter. Otherwise, a healthy S23 is still a sensible keep.
- Galaxy S24 owner: Usually keep it. Move to S25 for a specific feature, the lighter body, or a genuinely low net upgrade cost—not just because the model number changed.
- Galaxy S25 owner: There is no generational reason to replace it with another S25-series phone. Consider Plus or Ultra only if your needs have changed to a larger screen, more battery, S Pen or stronger camera hardware.
- New buyer: Choose S25 for the newer platform and longer remaining runway if the price is close. A substantially discounted S24 can be better value because its core display, battery capacity and standard camera arrangement are similar.
Compare the actual net cost: retail price, storage tier, trade-in value, carrier credits, financing terms and any refurbished or open-box discount. A trade-in offer can reverse the value equation, but promotional credit is not the same as a lower unlocked price. Samsung’s US MSRP file listed the S25 at $799.99 for 128GB and $859.99 for 256GB in March 2025; those are dated US MSRP signals, not current street prices or a guarantee of availability. Check live offers and trade-in terms at Samsung’s US S25 page and trade-in program, and compare the exact storage and regional model before buying.
