Samsung provides troubleshooting steps for Android Auto connection failures on Galaxy phones, but it has not identified one universal Galaxy S24 defect or a single fix for every car. The right next step depends on whether the failure is wired or wireless, whether the S24 fails in more than one vehicle, and whether another phone works in the same car.
Use the checks below to isolate the phone, Android Auto, cable, adapter, or infotainment system before deleting data, resetting the phone, or buying replacement hardware.
What Samsung’s guidance does—and does not—confirm
Samsung’s official Android Auto troubleshooting guide covers Galaxy phone connection failures. It recommends restarting the phone, clearing Android Auto’s cache, checking for software updates, and confirming that the paired car has Bluetooth permissions for Calls and Audio. Samsung’s guidance is useful for diagnosis, but it does not establish that all Galaxy S24, S24+, or S24 Ultra phones share one defect.
A Samsung moderator also responded to a Galaxy S24 Ultra report in which the phone became unresponsive during Android Auto use. The suggested escalation included testing in Safe Mode, removing third-party apps if the problem disappeared there, backing up before a factory reset, and seeking service if the fault continued. That is advice for an individual case, not proof of a universal cause (Samsung Community response).

Android Auto depends on several components working together: the phone’s software, Android Auto and Google Play services, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the vehicle’s implementation and firmware, and—in wired setups—the cable and data-capable USB port. Google notes that not every car with a USB port supports Android Auto and advises checking compatibility with the vehicle manufacturer (Google Android Auto troubleshooting).
What the 2024 Volkswagen Group reports were about
Coverage published on February 5, 2024 described wireless Android Auto problems on some Volkswagen, Škoda, and SEAT vehicles after Android changes. The report said fixes were being rolled out through dealerships. It is best understood as a reported compatibility problem involving particular vehicle systems—not evidence that every Galaxy S24 was defective or that every vehicle from those brands was affected (All Tech Nerd’s report).

A manufacturer bulletin hosted by NHTSA documents Android Auto connection and “Connection Unavailable” symptoms for the systems covered by that bulletin. It is relevant only if the reader’s vehicle and infotainment system fall within its scope; it should not be applied to other cars by analogy. If the issue is limited to one vehicle, ask its manufacturer or dealer whether there is an applicable update or service action.

Record the phone model, Android and One UI versions, Samsung security-patch date, Android Auto and Google Play services versions, car make/model/year, infotainment system, and connection method. Note whether the failure started after a phone, app, or car update. If possible, test another Android phone in the same car and the S24 in another compatible car. Those two comparisons often narrow the fault faster than repeatedly pairing devices.

Try these low-risk checks first
- Restart both systems. Restart the Galaxy S24 and turn the vehicle off completely. If the vehicle has a documented head-unit restart procedure, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Retest while parked.
- Install available updates. On the phone, open Settings > Software update > Download and install. Check Google Play for Android Auto, Google Play services, Google Maps, and the Google app updates. Ask the vehicle manufacturer or dealer about infotainment firmware. An update is not a guaranteed fix unless it applies to the exact phone, region, and vehicle system.
- Clear Android Auto’s cache. Open Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache, then restart the phone and test again. Samsung documents this path; menu wording can vary by One UI version or carrier.
- Confirm Bluetooth permissions. Go to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, tap the settings icon beside the vehicle, and check that Calls and Audio are enabled. Enable contact or message access if desired. If a permission cannot be switched on, remove the pairing and pair again.
If cache clearing does not help, clearing Android Auto’s app data or removing saved car pairings is a more disruptive next step: it may erase app state or require you to set up the vehicle again. Note the existing setup first, then use those steps only when you are ready to pair afresh.
For wired Android Auto: check the cable, port, and USB restrictions
- Use a short, known-good data cable. A phone charging does not prove that the cable carries the data connection Android Auto needs. Google identifies USB cables as a common cause when a previously working wired connection stops and recommends trying a replacement cable in some cases (Google troubleshooting guidance).
- Connect directly to the car’s data-capable port. Some vehicles have multiple USB ports but only one supports Android Auto or data. During diagnosis, remove hubs, extension cables, and dongles.
- Unlock the phone and accept prompts. Connect with the phone unlocked and approve any USB or Android Auto authorization prompt.
- Check Auto Blocker if charging works but data does not. Samsung’s update documentation warns that Auto Blocker with Maximum restrictions can limit USB devices to charging (Samsung Galaxy S24 update documentation). Open Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker and inspect the USB restrictions. Temporarily relax the relevant restriction only for a test, then restore the security setting if it is not the cause. The precise setting and path can vary by One UI version, country, and carrier.
- Cross-test. Try another compatible Android phone with the same cable and car port, then try the S24 with another known-compatible car if available. This separates a phone-side issue from a port, cable, or vehicle issue.
For wireless Android Auto: rebuild the connection cleanly
Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth for initial pairing and Wi-Fi for projection. Google recommends leaving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, and says the first wireless connection requires Bluetooth pairing (Google’s setup instructions).

- Remove the S24 from the car’s Bluetooth and infotainment device lists. On the phone, forget the car in Bluetooth settings and remove it from Android Auto’s previously connected cars if that option is available.
- Restart the phone and the infotainment system. Ensure Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are on; keep the phone unlocked for the initial setup.
- Pair again from the vehicle’s Android Auto setup flow. Test with no other phone connected to the car.
- If using a third-party wireless adapter, test without it where the car supports direct Android Auto, and check the adapter’s own firmware and compatibility. The adapter adds another software and wireless layer.
- If wireless fails only in one vehicle, check with the vehicle manufacturer or dealer for infotainment updates before resetting the phone.
Use cross-tests to decide whether the car or phone is more likely

If the phone freezes, test for app conflicts before resetting
A frozen car display and an unresponsive phone are different symptoms. If the S24 itself locks up during Android Auto use, first clear Android Auto’s cache and install available updates. Then test in Safe Mode, following Samsung’s device instructions. If Android Auto behaves normally in Safe Mode, a recently installed or updated third-party app may be involved; consider removing recent overlays, security tools, or apps with accessibility permissions one at a time.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent driving setup. If the problem persists across cars after software and app isolation, back up the phone before considering a factory reset. A reset can remove phone-side software state but will not repair car firmware. Contact Samsung service if the phone continues to freeze or become unresponsive after those checks.
How to interpret recent version-related complaints
As of August 18, 2026, community reports describe S24 Android Auto problems associated with later software changes. One Google Android Auto Community user reported that wireless operation worked with Android Auto 17.1 but froze after updating to 17.2 on the same phone, adapter, and vehicle (community report). A Samsung Community thread reports unusable Android Auto after a March 2026 Samsung update (user report). These accounts are anecdotal, not official confirmation of a widespread defect or a verified root cause.
If your issue began directly after an update, record the exact build and app versions and report the symptom through the relevant Samsung, Google, or vehicle support channel. Avoid unofficial Android Auto APK downgrades or unofficial firmware: they can add security and compatibility risks without proving that the update caused your particular failure.
