Samsung included the Galaxy S23 family and Galaxy Z Fold5 in its U.S. One UI 7 rollout, but this was a 2025 update—not a new August 2026 release. The Android 15-based update brought a broad interface refresh and new features. As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s U.S. support page identifies One UI 8 as the newer version, so owners should check for the latest update offered for their specific phone and carrier.
Which U.S. models were included?
Samsung’s U.S. support list includes the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra and S23 FE, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold5, among One UI 7-compatible devices. The S23 FE is a separate model from the standard S23 lineup, and its update timing or available features may differ.
The Fold model in this update announcement is the Z Fold5. Samsung’s rollout was staged, not a promise that every eligible phone would receive the update on one common date. Carrier-branded, unlocked and imported phones may follow different schedules.

What made One UI 7 a major update?
“Massive” is best understood as the scope of the software changes, not a guaranteed download size. Package size depends on the phone and its existing software build; Samsung’s announcement does not establish one file size for every S23 or Fold5.
- A refreshed interface: One UI 7 changed the visual styling and system experience, with updated navigation and personalization options.
- Notifications and quick controls: The update revised how system alerts and quick settings are presented and accessed.
- Android 15 foundation: It moved supported phones to Samsung’s Android 15 software generation, alongside Samsung’s own interface changes.
- AI-oriented features: Samsung promoted more natural interaction and Galaxy AI additions, but the exact set varies by model and other requirements. A feature shown on a newer S-series phone should not be assumed to work identically on an S23 or Fold5.
For example, Samsung highlighted natural-language search in Settings, but its announcement initially identified selected newer devices for that capability. The source does not confirm that it behaves the same way on every S23 variant or the Fold5. AI functions can also depend on an internet connection, supported language, and Samsung or Google account.

Useful additions in Samsung’s support guidance
Samsung describes an option to archive apps that have gone unused for 30 days. To review it, open Settings → Device Care → Unused apps, select apps, then tap Archive app(s). Menu wording may vary by software build.

Samsung also provides Family-group controls under Settings → Samsung account profile → Family → Invite family member. This requires a Samsung account; it is not an account-free feature.

What S23 and Fold5 owners should not assume
Eligibility for One UI 7 does not mean every feature Samsung advertised for the S24, S25 or newer foldables is present on these older devices. Feature access can depend on model, language, region, connectivity and account status. Samsung’s public U.S. support page does not give a complete model-by-model feature matrix for the S23 and Fold5.
On the Z Fold5, layout and app behavior can naturally differ between the cover display and the larger inner screen. Do not infer from a general One UI 7 announcement that a particular multitasking, Flex-mode or app-pair behavior changed; confirm it on the device or in a Fold5-specific changelog.

How to check for an update
- Back up important data. Connect to Wi-Fi, charge the phone or keep it plugged in, and make sure there is enough free storage.
- Open Settings, then tap Software update or System updates.
- Tap Download and install, then Check for system updates or Check for software updates, depending on the carrier and software version.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen prompts; some builds may show a Download now button.
- To see what is installed, open Settings → About phone → Software information. Check the One UI version and Android version; record the model number and build if you need carrier support.
A major update may use substantial temporary storage and the phone may need time after installation to finish background work. Keep it powered and do not interrupt the installation. There is no source-backed guarantee of a particular battery-life or performance change on the S23 or Fold5.

- Carrier staging: Samsung said timing could vary by carrier, and deployments may reach eligible devices in waves.
- Different model or region: Check Settings → About phone for the model number. An imported device may use another region’s software schedule; a foreign rollout date does not prove U.S. availability.
- Already on newer software: In 2026, a phone may have advanced beyond One UI 7. Samsung’s U.S. support page now identifies One UI 8 as newer and lists the S23 family and Fold5 among devices associated with the newer rollout.
If the phone says it is up to date, restart it, connect to Wi-Fi and check again. If the model is eligible but no update is offered, allow for carrier staging and consult the carrier’s software-update information or Samsung support. Avoid installing firmware intended for another region: it may not match the phone’s variant and can complicate support.

If installation fails or a feature is missing
For a failed download or install, free storage, restart the phone and retry on a stable connection. Back up data before any recovery procedure. Use Samsung’s official recovery or desktop tools only when their instructions cover the model and situation; otherwise, contact Samsung or the carrier. A factory reset is disruptive and should not be the first response to an update that has not been offered.
If a promoted feature is absent after updating, first check whether it is supported on that exact model and in your language and region. Some features require an account or network access, and carrier software can affect availability. A feature advertised for a newer Galaxy phone is not proof it is included on the S23 or Fold5.
Should you install One UI 7 now?
If the phone still offers One UI 7 and has not been updated, install the official update after backing up. But for a U.S. S23 or Fold5 owner checking in August 2026, the more useful question is whether the phone has the latest official software available for its model and carrier. Check Software update rather than treating One UI 7 as the newest destination.
