Yes: Samsung tested One UI 8 on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the update was later released for the phone in supported markets. The original evidence was a Geekbench listing reported on May 14, 2025—not a Samsung announcement or a promise of a release date. One UI 8 is based on Android 16 and is expected to be the S22 Ultra’s final major Android upgrade under Samsung’s four-generation OS-upgrade commitment.
What the original One UI 8 sighting showed
On May 14, 2025, Gizmochina reported a Geekbench listing showing Galaxy S22 Ultra hardware running One UI 8, Samsung’s software based on Android 16. The report attributed the discovery to a tipster.
A benchmark listing is useful evidence that firmware is being built and tested on a real device. It is not the same as an official announcement: it does not confirm a public beta, a guaranteed launch date, a complete feature list, or when a particular region or carrier will receive the update. The report’s expectations at the time—a beta beginning in May and a stable release around September 2025—were forecasts, not dates Samsung guaranteed for every S22 Ultra.

The development-stage sighting was followed by an actual update. Samsung’s One UI 8 rollout information included the Galaxy S22 series, and Samsung Germany’s schedule later marked the Galaxy S22 Ultra update as completed. Samsung’s schedule is region-specific; it should not be read as proof that every model and carrier received the update at the same time.

Samsung says timing and supported functions can vary by model, country, and network operator, and its schedules can change. Rollouts may also be staged or temporarily paused if an issue is found. Samsung points users to the Samsung Members app for the latest planning information. The broader One UI 8 rollout began with newer Galaxy devices in September 2025 before expanding to more models; coverage of the rollout also noted that availability could be paused during distribution.
What One UI 8 means on this phone
Android 16 is the underlying operating system; One UI 8 is Samsung’s interface and software layer built on top of it. The S22 Ultra update is therefore an Android 16/One UI 8 upgrade, not simply an Android-version change without Samsung’s software.

Samsung describes One UI 8 as adding or refining AI functions, interface behavior, and features across device types. But a feature available on a newer Galaxy flagship may depend on newer hardware, a particular market, or a later software build. Samsung’s One UI 8 rollout announcement describes the wider release, not a guarantee that every advertised feature works on the S22 Ultra. Check the feature’s device requirements before counting on it.

Is One UI 8 the S22 Ultra’s last major Android upgrade?
That is the expected endpoint under Samsung’s original policy for the S22 generation: four Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The S22 Ultra launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1; its major-version path runs through Android 13, 14, 15, and 16. That makes One UI 8/Android 16 its fourth major Android upgrade. Samsung announced the four-generation upgrade commitment for eligible Galaxy devices, including the S22 series.

Major Android upgrades and security updates are separate. The end of major-version upgrades does not mean the phone stops working or immediately stops receiving security maintenance. Samsung’s five-year security commitment is a different support promise; it should not be mistaken for five years of new Android versions. Nor does One UI 8 automatically guarantee One UI 8.5 or any later major release. Unless Samsung specifically lists the S22 Ultra for another version, treat future eligibility as unconfirmed.
How to check for One UI 8
- Back up important data before installing. Samsung Cloud or Google backup can cover supported data. Samsung Smart Switch can help with a device-to-device transfer or a computer backup, but it may not capture every app’s data, authentication credential, or encrypted item.
- On the phone, open Settings → Software update → Download and install.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection, ensure the battery is sufficiently charged, and make room for the download and installation.
- If the update is not offered, check Samsung Members for your region’s schedule and verify the phone’s exact model number and service-provider software version.
After installation, the phone may spend time indexing and optimizing apps. Temporary warmth or increased battery use can occur during that work. If the interface remains abnormal after it settles, restart the phone and update apps through both the Play Store and Galaxy Store.

If the update does not appear or install
- Staged or regional rollout: Availability can reach devices at different times, even within the same country. A schedule for Germany, for example, does not establish availability in another market.
- Carrier approval: Carrier-branded models can follow a different timetable from unlocked phones.
- Temporary pause: Samsung may delay or stop distribution while investigating a quality or compatibility problem. Check Samsung Members rather than repeatedly forcing an install.
- Model or software mismatch: The S22 Ultra name covers regional and carrier variants; firmware is not interchangeable across every model number. Confirm the variant before considering any manual firmware process.
- Storage, power, or connection: Free up storage, charge the phone, and retry on reliable Wi-Fi if a download fails.
- Modified software: Rooting, bootloader changes, or unofficial firmware can interfere with normal over-the-air updates. Avoid installing firmware intended for a different model or region.
Not seeing the update does not by itself mean the S22 Ultra is unsupported. Samsung’s own guidance is that availability varies by model, region, and operator; for device-specific help, use Samsung Members or Samsung support.

Should you keep the S22 Ultra or move on?
One UI 8 gives the S22 Ultra its expected final major Android platform upgrade, which is a reason to keep a working phone—not an automatic reason to replace it. The integrated S Pen and camera system may remain sufficient for an owner’s needs. On the other hand, the phone is near the end of major-version support, and a used unit’s battery health can vary widely.

If battery life is the main problem and the rest of the phone is sound, compare a repair with the net cost of upgrading. Samsung’s repair portal can show service options, though cost and availability depend on location and damage. If longer remaining software support or newer hardware is the priority, compare a current Galaxy model and any trade-in offer; Samsung’s trade-in program varies by device condition, carrier status, market, and promotion. There is no single buy-or-upgrade verdict without knowing the phone’s condition and the current local offer.
