How do I add Google Analytics to WordPress? For most beginners, the simplest route is Google’s Site Kit plugin: connect your Google account, choose the correct GA4 property and web stream, let Site Kit place the tag, then confirm visits in Analytics’ Realtime report. This guide explains how to set up GA4 on WordPress, avoid duplicate tracking, and troubleshoot missing visits.
Before you connect GA4
Check that the site is publicly accessible and running in production. Site Kit lists WordPress 5.2 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer, a modern browser and a working WordPress REST API among its requirements. Treat a staging site separately: testing it can send unwanted visits to a production property.
You also need WordPress administrator access for the initial Site Kit configuration and a Google account that can access the Analytics property you intend to use.
Account, property and web stream: what you are choosing
These are different levels in GA4:
- Analytics account: the top-level container for one or more properties.
- Property: the reporting environment for a site, app or organization.
- Web data stream: the website data source inside a property.
The Measurement ID identifies the web stream and generally begins with G-. In Analytics, find it at Admin > Data streams > your website stream > Stream details. Select the stream that represents the site you are configuring, not merely the first property visible in your account.

How do I set up GA4 on WordPress with Site Kit?
1. Install and activate Site Kit
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Site Kit by Google, choose the official plugin, select Install Now, then Activate.
2. Connect your Google account and verify the site
Follow Site Kit’s setup prompts to authorize the connection and verify ownership. Use the Google account that has access to the Analytics property you want to receive data. Site Kit’s initial configuration is restricted to a WordPress administrator.
3. Connect Analytics
During setup, choose an existing Analytics account and property, then select the appropriate web stream. If you skip this step, open Site Kit’s settings later and connect Analytics there. Site Kit can add the required Google tag as part of the connection.

4. Review the existing-tag prompt carefully
If Site Kit detects an Analytics implementation, it may offer to connect to the existing setup or place a snippet. Confirm the property and stream before proceeding. Do not add another installation simply because a tag already exists; two implementations can count a visit twice or create conflicting configuration.

How can I tell if Google Analytics is working on my WordPress site?
Use Realtime first
- Open the connected GA4 property.
- Go to Reports > Realtime.
- Open the site in a private/incognito window, or log out so you behave like a normal visitor.
- Browse one or two pages and watch for the visit in Realtime.
Google says collection can take up to 30 minutes to begin. Site Kit’s WordPress dashboard can take up to 48 hours to populate, so an empty dashboard shortly after setup does not by itself prove that tracking failed. Realtime in Analytics is the better first check.
If Realtime remains empty
- Confirm Site Kit is connected to the intended Analytics property and web stream.
- Check Site Health to establish whether Site Kit placed the snippet.
- Test while logged out or in a private window; administrator views can be affected by site behavior and browser extensions.
- Check whether a consent plugin is withholding Analytics until consent is given.
- Temporarily review caching, minification or optimization settings that may alter or delay the tag.
- Use Google Tag Assistant when you need to inspect whether the tag loads and which configuration it sends.
Do you need to paste GA4 code manually?
Usually not. Site Kit and other supported WordPress integrations can place the Google tag through a CMS workflow. Manual Google-tag insertion or Google Tag Manager is an alternative when your site lacks a suitable integration or you need more control over tags and events.

| Route | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Site Kit | Beginners who want guided account connection, automatic tag placement and selected Analytics metrics in WordPress | Requires Google authorization; you must check for an existing tag and understand consent behavior |
| Another supported WordPress integration | A site already standardized on a compatible analytics plugin or workflow | Identify which tool owns the tag and prevent overlapping snippets; maintenance depends on that tool |
| Manual Google tag or Tag Manager | Owners who need custom control or have no suitable native integration | More configuration and validation responsibility, especially for events |
No route is established here as inherently more accurate. The practical choice is the one your team can maintain without duplicate code.
Consent and privacy controls
Site Kit’s consent-mode support does not display a consent banner or ask visitors for permission. If your audience or jurisdictions require a choice before analytics cookies or measurement are used, add a separate consent-management plugin and configure its integration. Site Kit documents integrations including Complianz, Cookiebot and CookieYes.
Until a visitor grants the required consent, the plugin may prevent Analytics from loading or limit what is sent. That is why a private-window test can show no visit even when the tag is installed. You remain responsible for assessing the rules that apply to your visitors and configuring the consent tool accordingly.
What about events and conversions?
A basic Site Kit connection collects standard GA4 page and interaction data; it does not configure every custom event your business may need. For actions such as form submissions, downloads, purchases or outbound-link clicks, configure events in GA4 and/or Google Tag Manager. Use Tag Assistant to validate that the event fires with the intended parameters. Define important events as conversions in Analytics after confirming that the underlying event is reliable.
Why Site Kit and Analytics numbers can differ
Site Kit shows a selected view of Analytics data inside WordPress, while Analytics provides the full reporting interface and Realtime diagnostics. Small differences can occur because some calculations use different user metrics or reporting views. Use the Analytics property as the detailed source for investigation rather than treating the Site Kit dashboard as a second tracking system.

- Record the property name, web stream and Measurement ID used for the site.
- Keep exactly one deliberate tag owner unless you have a documented reason for multiple configurations.
- Recheck Realtime after major theme, plugin, caching or consent changes.
- Review custom events and conversions in Analytics rather than assuming Site Kit created them.
- Repeat the logged-out test when a consent banner, optimization plugin or staging workflow changes.
The Bottom Line
For a typical beginner site, connect GA4 through Site Kit, verify the exact web stream, confirm a visit in Analytics Realtime, and investigate consent or duplicate-tag issues before changing code. Add Tag Manager or custom GA4 events only when your measurement needs go beyond the standard setup.
