Google Maps reviews are meant to help people decide where to go. The useful ones say what the place was like, what it cost, how the service went, or what a visitor should know. The funny ones may tell you that the reviewer had a difficult Tuesday, shares a name with the owner, or has strong feelings about the weather—but leave out whether the coffee was any good.
A note on the examples: The research available for this article did not include review screenshots or independently verifiable examples. So the snippets below are clearly labeled illustrations of familiar review habits, not quotations from real Google Maps posts. They show why this kind of review makes people laugh—and why it cannot help you plan a visit.
What makes a review funny—and useless?
Google’s guidance encourages reviewers to describe authentic experiences and include concrete details: the atmosphere, highs and lows, what they ordered, price range, service, and who might enjoy the business. Those details help a reader picture the visit. A review becomes comedy when it swerves away from them—into a diary entry, a grievance, a punchline, or a star rating that appears to have been chosen by a different person from the one who wrote the text.

The five-star review based on a name
“Five stars. The cashier’s name was also Jordan. Finally, a business with excellent taste.”
Why it works: The reviewer is delighted, but the reason has nothing to do with the business. It could have been a lovely meal or a damp napkin; the rating has already been decided by a coincidence.
Useful information: Someone named Jordan works there. The food, service, price, and atmosphere remain a mystery.

“I came here after missing the bus, losing an umbrella, and having a very long conversation with my brother. Anyway, the place was there.”
Why it works: The business is cast in a supporting role in somebody else’s personal essay. The review provides a beginning, a middle, and perhaps a family subplot—but no account of what happened inside.
Useful information: The reviewer had a difficult journey. You still do not know whether the place is worth visiting.

The complaint aimed at the weather
“One star. It rained while I was here.”
Why it works: A star rating is being used to hold a business responsible for something it probably cannot control. It is a perfect mismatch between the scale and the complaint.
Useful information: It may have rained during one visit. The review says nothing about indoor seating, shelter, or whether the venue caused the problem.
The technically accurate non-review
“The building is definitely a building.”
Why it works: It sounds like a conclusion reached after a serious investigation, yet delivers the least surprising fact possible.
Useful information: The place appears to have walls. That is not the same as knowing whether it is open, accessible, welcoming, or any good.
The rating and the text have separate opinions
“One star. Great service, lovely staff, and I would absolutely come back.”

Why it works: The written review is an endorsement; the rating is a warning. Perhaps there is missing context, a mis-tap, or an elaborate joke. Without an explanation, a reader cannot tell.
Useful information: The reviewer says the service was good and they would return. The one-star score contradicts that account, so it is hard to interpret.
The review that becomes a breakup text
“I thought we had something special. Then the hours changed, and I learned the hard way that some places are not ready for commitment.”
Why it works: A business listing has become the setting for a relationship metaphor. It may be a memorable sentence, but the reader is left wondering what the actual opening hours are.

Useful information: The reviewer says the hours changed. Check the listing or contact the business before travelling; the poetic phrasing does not establish the current schedule.
The owner reply that turns a small joke into a scene
Illustrative review: “The chair looked at me funny.”
Illustrative owner reply: “We have spoken to the chair. It denies everything.”
Why it works: The business joins the bit rather than treating a strange complaint as a crisis. A good reply can give an otherwise empty review a second punchline.
Useful information: None about the chairs’ comfort. The exchange does at least suggest that someone at the business has a sense of humor—but a prospective visitor should not mistake a witty reply for a service report.

The vivid detail that answers no useful question
“The spoon was the color of a cloud that had seen too much.”
Why it works: It is an impressive amount of emotional weight to place on cutlery. The sentence may be accidental poetry, or the opening of a story no one else gets to read.
Useful information: There was a spoon. We do not know what was ordered, how it tasted, or whether the utensil was clean or merely dramatic.

Comedy and useful information are not opposites. A concise joke can still tell a future visitor something practical:

Useful information: The reviewer names the product, gives a specific wait time and identifies when it matters. The light tone does not hide the point: a rushed visitor may want to choose another time.
That distinction matters. A joke about a long wait could help someone plan; a one-star complaint about rain may not. And a rating alone is not the whole story: a funny mismatch between stars and text is entertaining, but it is a poor substitute for details about the actual visit.
Why the real thing needs checking
Google says reviews are intended to help people understand places, and its policies prohibit or restrict material such as fake, copied, off-topic, defamatory, privacy-violating, or personally abusive content. The company describes using automated systems and human operators to identify policy-violating material; reviews and business responses can therefore change or disappear. A screenshot can also lose its date, place name, rating, or reply when it is reposted elsewhere.
For that reason, a funny image circulating online should not automatically be presented as an authentic, currently visible Google review. Verifying one means checking that the business exists, that the review is attached to the correct listing, and that the wording and rating match. It also means being careful with usernames, faces, and personal details that add nothing to the joke. A public post is not a reason to expose information irrelevant to the story.
There is another boundary: a comic review is not proof that a business did something wrong. Serious claims about safety, criminal conduct, health, or sanitation should not be treated as punchlines or repeated as established fact just because they appeared in a review. The joke should be the irrelevant detail, the contradiction, or the elaborate turn of phrase—not a vulnerable person, a reviewer’s language ability, or someone’s misfortune.
How to write a funny review that still helps
- Start with what happened. Name the product, service, or part of the visit you are describing.
- Include the detail a visitor can use. Price, wait time, accessibility, atmosphere, and service are often more useful than a general verdict.
- Separate preference from a business problem. “I found the music too loud” tells readers about your experience; it does not mean every visitor will feel the same way.
- Add the joke after the information. The punchline lands better when it does not make the basic facts impossible to find.
- Stick to a real experience and avoid targeting individuals. Do not invent a visit or publish someone’s private details for a laugh.
The best useful review can still be funny. It just leaves the next person with something more than a mood, a mystery, or the suspicion that the chairs are plotting.
