For a full-screen screenshot, press Windows + PrtScn on Windows to save an image, Shift + Command + 3 on a Mac, or Prnt Scrn in GNOME. The important distinction is that some shortcuts save a file while others copy the capture to the clipboard. The exact behavior can also depend on your keyboard and desktop settings.

Microsoft documents PrtScn as a full-screen capture copied to the clipboard and Windows key + PrtScn as a full-screen capture saved in the Pictures folder’s Screenshots subfolder. Apple’s full-screen shortcut is Shift + Command + 3. GNOME’s keyboard-shortcuts help lists Prnt Scrn for taking a screenshot.
Windows: save the whole screen or copy it
Save a full-screen image file
- Press the Windows logo key + PrtScn together.
- Open Pictures, then open Screenshots to find the saved capture.
This is the direct choice when you want a file rather than an image you must paste somewhere. On some keyboards, the Print Screen key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or something similar.
Copy a full-screen capture to the clipboard
- Press PrtScn.
- Switch to an app that accepts images and paste with Ctrl + V.
Microsoft describes this shortcut as copying a screenshot of the whole screen to the clipboard. It does not use the same automatic PicturesScreenshots file destination as Windows key + PrtScn.

Use the snipping overlay for a region or window
Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose a region, window, or another available snip mode from the overlay. This is useful when you do not want the entire display, but it is not the dedicated one-step full-screen file shortcut.
If PrtScn opens Snipping Tool
Windows can be configured so that pressing Print Screen opens the Snipping Tool overlay instead of directly copying the whole screen. If the key behaves differently from the clipboard workflow, search Windows Settings for the Print Screen keyboard behavior setting and check whether the option to use the Print Screen key to open screen capture is enabled. You can still use the Windows key + PrtScn shortcut for a full-screen file capture.

Mac: capture the entire screen
- Press and release Shift + Command + 3 together.
- Look on the desktop for the screenshot, which is the default destination.
Apple’s instruction is to press and then release Shift, Command, and 3 together. A thumbnail appears briefly after capture. Control-click the thumbnail to find the Save to Clipboard option if you want to paste the screenshot into another app instead of keeping the default saved file.

Linux with GNOME: full screen, window, or area

These are GNOME’s documented mappings. Linux does not have one universal screenshot shortcut for every distribution and desktop environment: KDE, Cinnamon, XFCE, and customized installations may use different bindings. If a key does nothing or triggers another action, open your desktop’s keyboard settings and search its shortcut list for screenshot actions.
When your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Compact and laptop keyboards may omit a dedicated Print Screen key or place its function behind an Fn layer. Check the key legends for a secondary PrtSc/Print Screen label and try the corresponding Fn combination if your keyboard has one. There is no single Fn combination that applies to every model, so use the keyboard maker’s instructions when the legend is unclear.

An external USB keyboard with a labeled Print Screen key is a practical option when the built-in keyboard lacks one. The operating system still determines what the key does: it may copy a capture, save a file, or open a capture tool according to the system’s mapping and settings.
Choose the shortcut by what you need next
- Need a file on Windows? Use Windows key + PrtScn and look in PicturesScreenshots.
- Need to paste a Windows screenshot? Use PrtScn, then paste into the destination app.
- Need the whole Mac display? Use Shift + Command + 3; use the thumbnail’s Save to Clipboard option when you want clipboard output.
- Need GNOME’s whole screen? Use Prnt Scrn. For a window or area, use Alt + Prnt Scrn or Shift + Prnt Scrn.
- Do you have a compact keyboard? Check for a secondary Print Screen function or use an external keyboard with that key.
Troubleshooting a shortcut that does not work as expected
Nothing happens when you press PrtScn
First check whether the key is combined with another function on your laptop or compact keyboard; look for an Fn-layer label. On Linux, verify that the desktop environment has not changed the shortcut. On Windows, check whether Print Screen is configured to open the Snipping Tool overlay rather than act as a direct clipboard capture.

You cannot find the screenshot
On Windows, distinguish the two common outcomes: Windows key + PrtScn saves to PicturesScreenshots, while PrtScn copies to the clipboard. For the clipboard shortcut, paste into an image editor or other app rather than looking for a new file. On macOS, the default saved destination is the desktop; use the thumbnail menu if you want clipboard output.
The capture includes more than you intended
A full-screen shortcut captures the whole screen. Use Windows key + Shift + S for a selected region or window, Shift + Command + 4 for a Mac selection, or GNOME’s Shift + Prnt Scrn for an area.
