A full-page screenshot captures a web document from top to bottom, including content below the browser viewport. For a quick one-off image, Firefox Developer Tools has an “entire page” control. For repeatable captures, Playwright’s fullPage option or its command-line interface is more practical. Inspect the saved image afterward: dynamic pages may reveal content only as they scroll, and no documented method guarantees identical results on every site.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A normal screenshot records the pixels currently visible in a browser window. A full-page screenshot instead renders the page’s complete scrollable document into one image. It is useful for design reviews, bug reports, visual change tracking and archiving a page that is longer than one screen.
The image does not automatically include browser tabs, the address bar or other browser chrome. It represents the web page itself. Capturing one component—such as a pricing card or navigation menu—is a different task and is usually better handled with an element screenshot.

Capture an entire page in Firefox
Enable the screenshot control
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Open Developer Tools (for example, from the browser menu or with its keyboard shortcut).
- Open Developer Tools settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the new screenshot icon in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the image to the browser’s Downloads directory.
Open the downloaded file and check the bottom of the page, images and sticky elements. A page that loads more content while scrolling can produce an image that differs from what you see after manually scrolling through it.
Capture only an inspected element
When the requirement is a single component rather than the entire document, inspect that node in Developer Tools and use the separate Screenshot Node action. This avoids an enormous image containing unrelated content.
Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright
JavaScript example
After installing Playwright in a Node.js project and installing its supported browser, this script opens a URL and writes a complete-page PNG:

- Wait for a meaningful selector instead of assuming the first paint is complete:
await page.waitForSelector('.article-content');. - For an animation or delayed widget, add a deliberate delay only when necessary:
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);. - Set a fixed viewport so image dimensions do not change between runs.
- Use a selector screenshot when a full document is not the actual test target.
- Always inspect a sample output, especially when the site uses lazy-loaded images or infinite scrolling.
These steps improve repeatability, but they are not a universal guarantee. A site can still change content in response to scrolling, location, cookies, authentication or bot defenses.

Playwright command line
For a terminal-only capture, use the CLI’s full-page flag and choose an output filename:
npx playwright screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png https://example.comThe screenshot command also supports selecting an image format and a high-resolution option. Run npx playwright screenshot --help in your installed version to see the exact flags available there.
Handling pages that do not capture cleanly
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Some sites request images only when an element approaches the viewport. A full-page operation may not trigger every site’s custom lazy-loading code. Scroll through the page before a manual capture, or in automation wait for the relevant image selector and verify that its src or rendered pixels are present. If the page uses infinite scrolling, define a stopping condition; “full page” can otherwise mean an unbounded document.
Sticky headers or floating controls repeat
Fixed-position navigation, chat buttons and cookie notices can appear over several parts of a stitched image. Dismiss overlays before capture when you control the page. For a one-off diagnostic, note which overlays were visible rather than editing them out and implying that the source page looked different.

Consent dialogs block the content
Accept or reject the site’s consent dialog before taking a manual screenshot. In a script, locate the dialog’s real buttons and wait until it is gone; selectors differ by site. Do not bypass access controls or consent requirements on sites you do not operate.
Very long or protected pages fail
Large documents require more memory and time than a viewport capture. Use a realistic navigation timeout, keep the browser process alive only as long as needed, and split an exceptionally long report into known sections if one image is impractical. A CAPTCHA, bot check, blank response or authentication wall is a page-state problem—not a screenshot-format problem. Fix access first, then capture.
Output format, dimensions and quality
PNG is lossless and useful for text-heavy bug reports. JPEG is smaller but introduces compression artifacts around text. WebP can reduce file size when your review system accepts it. The final dimensions depend on the document’s rendered width, device scale factor and total scroll height; an unusually tall image may be difficult to view or exceed a downstream system’s limits. Resize a copy for sharing while retaining the original for inspection.

A high-resolution or retina setting increases pixel density, not the page’s CSS layout width. Keep the viewport and scale factor consistent when comparing screenshots over time.

Verify the result before relying on it
- Confirm the file exists and opens in an image viewer.
- Check the header, footer and several points between them.
- Look for blank image boxes, repeated fixed elements, clipped text and unexpected horizontal scrolling.
- Compare the capture timestamp, URL, viewport and authentication state with your record.
- For automated tests, fail or flag the job when navigation times out or required selectors never appear; do not silently publish an empty image.
