For a single page, use the browser’s built-in capture tool: Chrome and Chromium use DevTools’ Capture full size screenshot, Firefox offers Take Screenshot → Save full page, Edge includes Web Capture, and Safari uses its developer tools. These methods are free and require no extension. Scroll through the page first so lazy-loaded content appears, dismiss overlays, and inspect the result for repeated sticky headers or blank sections.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot is one image containing the document beyond the visible viewport, from the header to the footer. It is different from a viewport screenshot, which records only what is currently visible. Full-page capture is useful for design reviews, documentation, bug reports, accessibility checks, archives, and comparing desktop and mobile layouts.
Browser-native tools generally produce PNG files. If you need JPEG, WebP, PDFs, repeatable settings, or many URLs, an automated service is more practical than repeating a manual browser workflow.
Chrome and Chromium: the fastest no-extension method
- Load the page completely. Wait for fonts, scripts and images. Scroll from the top to the bottom once; this gives many lazy-loaded images an opportunity to render.
- Open DevTools. On macOS press Cmd+Option+I. On Windows or Linux press Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Open the Command Menu. Press Cmd+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux.
- Type screenshot, then choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves a PNG containing the page’s full height.
For one component rather than the entire document, choose Capture node screenshot in the same menu. First select the element in the Elements panel, then run the command. This avoids capturing unrelated navigation or footer content.
Capture a mobile-layout page
- Open DevTools and toggle the device toolbar: Cmd+Shift+M on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+M on Windows/Linux.
- Select a phone profile or set a custom width and height.
- Reload the page, scroll through it if it lazy-loads content, then run Capture full size screenshot.
The image uses the emulated viewport’s responsive layout, so it is suitable for checking what a phone visitor sees. It does not prove that every physical phone renders identically.

Firefox: save the whole page from the context menu
- Open the page and let it finish loading.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page, then save the PNG or copy it to the clipboard.
Firefox Developer Tools provide another route. In DevTools Settings, enable the Take a screenshot of the entire page toolbox button, then click that button. Firefox’s Web Console also provides a :screenshot helper with options including --fullpage, --delay, --dpr, --filename and --selector. A selector capture is useful when the page contains a long article but you need only a results panel.
Microsoft Edge: Web Capture
Edge’s built-in Screenshot/Web Capture can capture a full page or a selected area, including long or moving webpages. After capturing, you can add pen or touch markup before copying or saving. The exact feature and controls can vary by device, market and browser version, so update Edge and check the Web Capture menu if the command is missing.

- In Safari, open Safari → Settings → Advanced and enable Show features for web developers (the label may differ slightly by macOS release).
- Enter Responsive Design Mode from the Develop menu if you need to test a specific viewport.
- Use Safari’s export or Web Inspector capture route to save the rendered page.
Safari’s workflow has more steps than Firefox’s context-menu command, but it is the appropriate choice when the behavior being checked is specific to WebKit. Confirm the exported image includes the full document before sharing it.
Why full-page captures have gaps, overlays or repeated headers
Lazy-loaded images are blank
Many sites request images only when their containers approach the viewport. Scroll through the page once before capturing, then wait for spinners to disappear. This often fills the image placeholders, but a page that loads content only after interaction may still need a manual click or a delay. If the browser captured before JavaScript finished, reload and repeat.

Sticky navigation appears several times
Stitched captures move through the page in viewport-sized sections. A fixed header can therefore be painted in every section, producing repeated navigation bars. Hide the header temporarily with DevTools, use a selector-based capture of the content, or retake the image after changing the site’s presentation mode. Always inspect the final PNG rather than assuming the stitching is correct.
Cookie notices, chat bubbles and newsletter popups cover content
Accept or reject the cookie dialog before capture, close chat and newsletter prompts, and wait for an animation to end. If a modal cannot be dismissed, crop the affected area or use an element capture that excludes it. Overlays are part of the rendered page, so native tools do not automatically remove them.
Nested scroll areas are missing
A page may have an inner results panel with its own scrollbar. Full-page capture normally follows the document scroll, not every nested container. Scroll the inner panel separately and use Capture node screenshot (Chrome) or Firefox’s --selector option for that element.
Animated or changing content does not line up
Carousels, ads, clocks and client-side counters can change between stitched sections. Pause the animation where possible, wait for a stable state, or hide the moving element. Third-party extensions may have fixes for difficult iframes, scrollbars and fixed elements, but their output still needs review.

Choose native capture for an occasional page, an extension when convenience matters inside your browser, and a service when you need repeatable settings or many URLs. Browser methods are manual one page at a time; that becomes the dominant cost in competitor or regression research.

Performance, reliability and privacy choices
- Reduce surprises: capture after fonts and images settle; use a selector wait or network-idle wait in automation.
- Control page state: set a viewport, device preset, timezone, geolocation, user agent, cookies or authorization headers when the layout depends on them.
- Keep files manageable: retina scale improves detail but increases dimensions and file size. Resize output when a thumbnail or report does not need source resolution.
- Avoid stale content: choose a cache TTL deliberately. Disable or shorten caching for rapidly changing pages.
- Protect private pages: do not put secrets in a public URL. Use request headers, cookies and authorization only where you are permitted to access the page, and protect downloaded screenshots because they may contain account data.
- Verify the result: check the top, bottom, lazy-loaded sections, fixed elements, iframes and any nested scroll regions before treating the image as evidence.
Troubleshooting checklist
“Capture full size screenshot” is not listed
Make sure DevTools has focus, then open the Command Menu with the correct shortcut and search for screenshot. Update the browser if the command is still absent, or use Firefox’s Take Screenshot route.
The file is only the visible viewport
Choose Capture full size screenshot, not the ordinary camera icon or a selection capture. In Firefox, select Save full page. For an automated request, confirm that full-page mode is enabled rather than a fixed height.
The page is blank or times out in automation
Check the URL, authentication and network access. Increase the wait or timeout, wait for a known selector, and inspect the returned page verdict. A bot check, CAPTCHA, failed load or blank page should be treated as a failed capture rather than a trustworthy image.

Images are still missing
Scroll once manually, wait for image requests, and capture again. For automation, use full-page mode with lazy-image loading and a selector or network-idle wait. Some content requires a click or a logged-in session.
The screenshot is too large to share
Use JPEG or WebP where transparency is unnecessary, lower the retina scale, or resize after capture. For a long document intended for printing, a PDF with paper size, margins and page ranges may be easier to distribute than one extremely tall bitmap.
A practical decision path
- For one public page, start with Chrome, Firefox or Edge’s native tool.
- If you need a specific component, capture the element rather than stitching the whole document.
- If overlays or lazy loading spoil the native image, clean the page manually and repeat; an automated service can handle common consent and widget elements.
- For mobile checks, emulate the target viewport before full-page capture.
- For recurring or multi-URL work, use an API or service with waits, device settings, caching and bulk jobs, then verify representative outputs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a full-page screenshot include content inside an iframe?
It may include the iframe’s visible rendering, but browser capture does not guarantee the iframe’s entire independently scrolling document. Capture the embedded element separately or use an automation workflow that can access it with the required permissions.
What format should I use for a very long webpage?
PNG preserves sharp text and transparency. WebP or JPEG usually produces smaller files when transparency is unnecessary. A PDF is often easier to print or paginate.
Is a browser screenshot proof that the site is accessible to everyone?
No. It records one rendered state at one viewport, browser and time. Test keyboard access, screen readers, contrast and responsive behavior separately.
