A full-page screenshot API captures a web page beyond the visible browser window, but setting a “full page” option does not guarantee that every image or dynamic section will appear. Lazy-loaded content may need scrolling, and some pages need extra wait time before capture. Choose a hosted API when you want a browser operation behind an HTTP request; use Playwright when you want to control browser automation in your own code.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot includes the page’s scrollable content, not just the part visible in the viewport. Playwright describes it as rendering the full scrollable page as though it fit on a very tall screen. Its option is fullPage: true.
That definition describes the intended extent of the image, not a guarantee that every page will render perfectly. Websites may load images only when they approach the viewport, animate elements, or arrange content in ways that do not behave like one continuous tall screen. The final result depends on how a particular capture implementation handles the page.
Why full-page captures miss content
Lazy loading needs scroll activity
Some pages do not request images or other content until a visitor scrolls near them. If capture begins without triggering that behavior, the screenshot can contain gaps or unloaded placeholders. Browserless documents a scrollPage option for scrolling before capture; ScreenshotOne also documents scroll controls for full-page requests. Scrolling can help trigger loading, but does not guarantee that every dynamic page will finish successfully.

Content may need more time
Page load completion and visual readiness are not always the same moment. A page can still be fetching images, rendering widgets, or changing layout after its initial response. ScreenshotOne documents adding a delay for pages that need more time, as well as animation-reduction controls. Waiting longer may improve completeness but adds capture time.
Capture strategy affects layout
ScreenshotOne documents two approaches: extending the viewport so the browser renders the page as one tall surface, or capturing sections in the viewport and combining them. The guide notes that the section-based approach can help on pages where simple viewport stretching causes rendering issues, while also cautioning that more tuning can reduce performance. These are provider-specific options, not a universal fix for every fixed element, animation, or unusual layout.
Choosing a hosted API or browser automation
The main decision is what you want to operate. A hosted screenshot API exposes browser capture through an HTTP request, while Playwright gives you a code-based browser automation workflow. A hosted request avoids managing browser infrastructure for that operation; with Playwright, your application controls the browser automation flow.
| Approach | Input and operation | Full-page and loading controls | Formats or targeting |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | GET request to its screenshot API; also offers an MCP server | Full-page capture with lazy images loaded; wait for a selector, delay, or network idle | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; CSS selector capture |
| ScreenshotOne | Hosted screenshot API | full_page=true; documents scroll controls, animation reduction, delay, viewport extension, and section-based capture |
See its full-page screenshots guide and getting started guide for documented options |
| Browserless | REST API; accepts a URL or inline HTML | fullPage: true; scrollPage can scroll to trigger lazy loading |
PNG, JPEG, or WebP; selector capture and clipping |
| Playwright | Browser automation code | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
See the Playwright screenshot documentation for the API’s screenshot options |

Capture a full page with Playwright
For a project already using Playwright, the core operation is short. This complete Node.js example starts Chromium, opens a URL, captures the full scrollable page, and closes the browser:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
The networkidle wait is a practical choice for pages that settle after their network activity finishes; it may not suit pages that keep connections open or continue updating indefinitely. If page-specific content loads only after scrolling, a full-page screenshot flag alone may not trigger it. Add deliberate scroll steps and wait for the relevant content before taking the screenshot. Verify the result rather than assuming one wait condition fits every site.
Make the capture more predictable
- Set the viewport width deliberately: responsive breakpoints can change layout and content. ScreenshotOne specifically notes that viewport width affects rendering; for full-page capture, viewport height is less important in its documented workflow.
- For pages with lazy images, scroll through the content and allow images to load before capturing. Check for missing sections in the output.
- For animated pages, reduce or wait out motion if it causes inconsistent frames. ScreenshotOne documents animation-reduction controls; exact controls differ by tool.
- Use a selector or clip when the requirement is one element or region rather than the entire document. Browserless documents both approaches.
- When a stretched full-page image has layout artifacts, test an alternative capture strategy if your provider documents one. ScreenshotOne’s section-based option is one provider-specific example.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a hosted website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its documented API and feature details are at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation. For a full-page capture, use its full-page option with a target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-d full_page=true
-o shot.webp
The API also supports capturing lazy images, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, and output as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting full-page screenshots
The bottom of the page is missing
Confirm that full-page capture is enabled, then inspect whether the page actually extends below the viewport at the chosen viewport width. Responsive pages may collapse or rearrange content. If the implementation offers pre-capture scrolling, use it to trigger lazy loading, and wait for the relevant sections to appear before capture.
Images are blank or placeholders remain
Check whether images load only after scroll. Scroll through the page before the screenshot and wait for image elements to finish loading. A delay may help with slow content, but it cannot force a site to return an image when the site itself errors or requires interaction.
Content is clipped, repeated, or misaligned
Fixed headers, sticky elements, and unusual layouts can render differently under different full-page strategies. Try an alternative strategy where the provider documents one, and compare the relevant sections. If only a particular panel matters, selector or clip capture can be more appropriate than a full-document image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The page never appears ready
Some pages continually make network requests or update in the background, so waiting for an idle state may not be appropriate. Use a page-specific selector or a measured delay when supported, and avoid an unbounded wait. Make sure the selector exists for the page variant being captured.

The screenshot succeeds but is the wrong size or format
Set the viewport width and device scale intentionally, and verify the output format requested or returned by the API. Browserless documents viewport and device-scale options, plus PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. For full-page rendering, changing viewport width can alter the page’s responsive layout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
More complete rendering can take longer: scrolling, waiting for images, reducing animation, or capturing page sections adds work. ScreenshotOne explicitly cautions that quality tuning can reduce performance. Favor the smallest wait and scrolling routine that produces the content your use case needs, and inspect outputs from representative page types.
Hosted APIs reduce the browser infrastructure you need to manage; Browserless describes its REST endpoints as single HTTP requests for common browser tasks. Playwright offers control through automation code, but the team operates that workflow. The sources cited here do not establish a head-to-head cost, speed, uptime, or reliability comparison, so evaluate those against your own capture volume and requirements rather than inferring a winner from feature lists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For any approach, account for changing page behavior: authentication, consent dialogs, anti-bot checks, slow assets, dynamic content, and site-specific restrictions can affect output. A screenshot API or browser library cannot promise a perfect capture of every page. Save representative outputs and monitor for missing content if captures feed a production workflow.

FAQ
Does full-page mean the same thing as a scrolling screenshot?
It means capturing the scrollable page beyond the current viewport. The implementation may render a tall viewport or combine sections, so output behavior can differ.
Can I capture inline HTML instead of a live URL?
Browserless documents both URL and inline HTML input for its REST screenshot endpoint.
Should I always wait for network idle?
No. It can be useful for pages that settle after network activity, but ongoing connections or background updates can make it unsuitable. Prefer a condition that matches the page’s actual readiness.
