Verdict: The Fuhu Nabi 2 was an unusually capable children’s tablet when it launched in 2012, but it is generally a poor primary-tablet purchase in 2026. Buy one only if it is very cheap, fully tested, and intended mainly for offline media, simple legacy apps, or retro-tech use. Its Android 4.0 software, aging battery, discontinued manufacturer, unavailable replacement parts, and uncertain Nabi online services outweigh its once-impressive hardware.
That distinction matters: the Nabi 2 deserves a positive historical review, but not a modern recommendation for families who expect current streaming apps, dependable parental controls, security updates, or active educational services.

What is the Fuhu Nabi 2?
The original Fuhu Nabi 2 was a 7-inch Android tablet designed specifically for children. It launched in the United States in 2012 at approximately $199.99, combining a protective silicone bumper, child-focused software, parental controls, educational content, and a password-protected parent environment.

Mattel’s Nabi 2 support page now lists the product as discontinued and says replacement parts are not currently available.

These specifications were strong for a children’s tablet in 2012. Contemporary coverage from Wired and other technology publications described the Nabi 2 as considerably faster and more capable than many toy-like competitors.
Design and durability
The removable bumper was one of the Nabi 2’s most useful features. It made the tablet easier for children to grip and offered meaningful protection against ordinary drops and spills. Unlike many inexpensive child-focused devices, the Nabi 2 was still a real Android tablet with useful connectivity: microSD expansion, Bluetooth, mini-HDMI, and a headphone jack.
Its weaknesses are more obvious today. The tablet is thick and heavy for younger children, and the 7-inch 1024×600 display looks dated beside modern screens. On a used unit, the bumper may be missing, cracked, sticky, or worn. That is more than a cosmetic problem: without it, much of the device’s child-oriented drop protection is gone, and Mattel says replacement parts are unavailable.
What to inspect on a used Nabi 2
- Power it on after charging and confirm that it does not shut down immediately when unplugged.
- Look for battery swelling, case separation, unusual heat, chemical smells, or a damaged charging port.
- Test the entire touchscreen for dead zones.
- Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connect.
- Test the camera, speakers, headphone jack, and buttons.
- Insert a microSD card and check whether it is detected.
- Test mini-HDMI if external-display output matters to you.
- Check that the charger and cable are included and fit securely.
- Confirm that the protective bumper is present and in usable condition.
- Ask whether the tablet has been factory-reset, and whether the apps you need still launch.
- Prefer a seller offering returns over an untested “powers on” listing.
Nabi Mode and parent mode
The defining software idea was a split between a child-facing environment called Nabi Mode and a password-protected parent environment commonly called Mommy Mode or Daddy Mode.
In Nabi Mode, parents could control access to websites, apps, media, and settings. Parent mode provided a more conventional Android experience and broader web and application access. This was an appealing arrangement in 2012: a child could use a simplified interface while an adult retained access to a general-purpose tablet.
However, those controls should be treated as a historical feature rather than a modern child-safety system. The Nabi 2 runs Android 4.0, lacks current security support, and was built around online services that are no longer supported. It does not offer the modern expectations of robust account management, remote monitoring, screen-time reporting, current content filtering, or a maintained web-safety platform.

At launch, Fuhu promoted a substantial software bundle containing games, books, music, and educational material. Product descriptions claimed curriculum coverage from preschool through sixth grade, while contemporary coverage described more than 100 included applications and content valued at more than $250. Those were launch-era manufacturer or reviewer claims, not an independently audited measure of present-day value.

- Games such as Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja HD, Kung Fu Panda, and Burn the Rope
- Chore List
- Treasure Box
- nabi Coins
- Nabi Cloud storage
- App Zone marketplace
- Music and digital-content purchasing
The quantity of bundled content was impressive for the period, but quantity did not guarantee quality or longevity. Children’s Technology Review gave the Nabi 2 an 82% rating, praising its faster processor, clearer display, expandable storage, and ability to function as a general Android tablet. It also criticized the limited App Zone catalog, noted omissions from major educational publishers, and found some educational material overly didactic.

That creates an important distinction for used buyers: a large original software bundle is not automatically valuable today. A factory reset may erase local content, and discontinued cloud services may prevent apps, books, or other material from being restored.
Performance: excellent for its time, limited today
The Tegra 3 processor and 1GB of RAM made the Nabi 2 unusually powerful for a children’s tablet in 2012. Contemporary reviews found it faster than many child-focused competitors and capable of running as a legitimate general-purpose Android tablet in parent mode.
In 2026, the processor itself is not the main obstacle. The practical limitations are the Android 4.0 operating system, old browser and security components, incompatible modern applications, aging internal storage, degraded batteries, and unsupported online services. Do not assume that a modern app will install merely because the tablet still powers on. Compatibility must be checked on the specific device and software build.
Battery life and battery safety
Wired reported approximately 8–10 hours of use for a new Nabi 2 under contemporary conditions. A contemporary report also identified a 3,850mAh battery. Neither figure should be treated as expected performance from a used unit.
A Nabi 2 bought in 2026 is roughly fourteen years old. Battery degradation is therefore one of the biggest buying risks. Stop using a tablet if it swells, separates the housing, becomes abnormally hot, smells unusual, has a damaged charging port, charges erratically, or shuts down suddenly. Do not open the tablet casually; its battery was not designed for ordinary user replacement, and the manual says battery replacement should be performed by an authorized service provider.
There is no basis here to claim a universal recall for every Nabi 2 variant. The sensible warning is the ordinary safety risk associated with any very old lithium-ion battery.

The biggest problem in 2026: discontinued services
Mattel still hosts documentation for the Nabi 2, but the product is discontinued, replacement parts are unavailable, and Mattel links to a dedicated FAQ about the discontinuation of Nabi services. Buyers should not assume that the original connected ecosystem works as it did at launch.

The careful conclusion is not that every local app has stopped working. Some software stored on the tablet may continue to run. The problem is that the manufacturer no longer supports the ecosystem, so buyers should not count on cloud access, downloads, account functions, or store availability.
A factory reset deserves special caution. It can remove locally stored applications and data, while discontinued services may make restoration impossible or difficult. Mattel still provides a Nabi 2 hard-reset FAQ, but reset instructions do not guarantee that old services or content can be recovered. If you already own a functioning unit, preserve useful apps and content before resetting it unnecessarily.
Google Play and sideloading
Contemporary reports said that the Nabi 2 could be used as a general Android tablet in parent mode and that Google Play support became available through an update or configuration process. That does not mean current Google Play services or modern apps will work on Android 4.0.
On an old Nabi 2, Google Play may fail because of server-side incompatibility, outdated Google components, expired certificates, or an app’s minimum Android requirement. Sideloading old APK files may work for some legacy software, but it introduces security and compatibility risks. Never treat APK downloads from unknown websites as a safe substitute for a supported app store, and do not assume that Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, modern browsers, or current educational apps will install or function properly.

There is no responsible nationwide “fair price” without current marketplace research, and the original $199.99 launch price is not a useful 2026 valuation benchmark. Do not pay a premium for the original educational bundle because much of it depended on an unsupported ecosystem.
Buy only when most of these conditions apply:
- The price is very low and the seller accepts returns.
- You want an offline or retro device rather than a current tablet.
- The exact model has been verified as the original Nabi 2.
- The battery has been tested and shows no safety warning signs.
- The bumper and charger are included.
- The tablet completes setup after charging.
- The apps and media you need are already installed and working.
- You accept that online services, stores, and downloads may not function.
Skip it if you need current apps, dependable online education, reliable parental filtering, security updates, replacement parts, warranty service, long battery life, or a dependable first tablet for a young child.
Common problems and what they mean
It powers on but will not charge properly
Possible causes include a worn battery, damaged cable, loose charging port, or battery-protection circuitry after deep discharge. Try a known-compatible charger and cable and inspect the port. Stop immediately if the device heats, swells, or smells unusual.
A factory reset removed the useful apps
This may be irreversible if the original download or account services are no longer available. Ask sellers whether the device has already been reset and request a demonstration of the apps that matter.

The app store or Google Play does not work
That is unsurprising on Android 4.0. It may reflect outdated Google services, certificate problems, server incompatibility, or modern apps requiring a newer operating system.
Child mode is restricted or broken
Nabi Mode depended on Fuhu’s software layer. A reset, corrupted data, incomplete setup, or unavailable online service can prevent the original workflow from operating normally.

Rapid drain is likely with a fourteen-year-old device. The original 8–10-hour estimate describes a new unit in its era, not a typical used Nabi 2 today.
The listing is mislabeled
Verify the model number, storage capacity, display resolution, back-panel markings, operating-system version, and accessories. A Nabi 2S or another Nabi model is not interchangeable with the original Nabi 2.
What should you buy instead?
A current kids’ tablet is the better choice for children who need modern applications, active security support, current parental controls, better battery support, and a warranty or replacement pathway.
A standard current tablet with parental controls may be preferable for older children or families wanting better performance, broader app compatibility, longer support, and more flexible profiles. The trade-off is that parents must configure restrictions themselves, and the tablet may be less rugged than the Nabi 2.

Final recommendation
Buy: only a very cheap, tested unit for limited offline use, retro software, or experimentation.
Skip: if you want current streaming, online educational services, modern parental controls, security support, or manufacturer assistance.
Existing owners: keep working local apps and content, avoid unnecessary factory resets, and stop using the tablet if its battery swells, overheats, smells unusual, or causes case separation.
