Yes—Claude Code can run through Amazon Bedrock. The current easiest setup is to start claude, choose 3rd-party platform → Amazon Bedrock, and complete the /setup-bedrock wizard. Bedrock supplies the model endpoint, AWS authentication, regional routing, IAM controls, and billing; Claude Code remains the local agent that reads your repository, runs commands, edits files, and executes tests.
Choose Bedrock primarily for AWS governance and centralized billing, not because it is automatically simpler or more private than the Anthropic API.
What changes when Claude Code uses Bedrock?

Your source tree and development tools still run on the workstation. “Using AWS” does not mean every operation occurs inside your VPC. Review the boundaries between the local machine, Bedrock, cross-Region inference, optional gateways, CloudTrail, shell history, prompts, source files, and tool output with your security team.
Claude Code’s Bedrock integration uses the Bedrock Invoke API, not Converse. A gateway must preserve Bedrock’s event-stream response format. WebSearch is unavailable through the Bedrock path. See the Claude Code Bedrock documentation.

Bedrock or the Anthropic API?
Bedrock is a strong fit when
- Your organization already manages developers through AWS IAM, IAM Identity Center, Organizations, SCPs, and CloudTrail.
- Central AWS billing and Cost Explorer reporting are preferable to a separate Anthropic subscription.
- You need account, Region, inference-profile, or gateway controls.
- Your procurement and data-governance processes are already built around AWS.
Bedrock trade-offs
- Model access varies by account, Region, inference profile, and permissions.
- AWS identity and region configuration add setup and failure modes.
- Cross-Region inference may affect data-residency decisions.
- Agentic token usage is difficult to forecast, and Opus-class defaults can cost more than Sonnet-class models.
- Feature parity is not guaranteed; WebSearch is specifically unavailable on Bedrock.
- SSO expiration, API-key rotation, proxies, and streaming gateways require operational support.
The Anthropic API may be better when
Use the Anthropic API when an individual wants the shortest setup, AWS IAM would be unnecessary overhead, or Anthropic-native account and feature management matter more than AWS controls. Neither provider is universally more secure or private; the answer depends on your contracts, retention settings, Region, identity design, and network controls.
Prerequisites and model access
- An AWS account with Amazon Bedrock enabled.
- Claude Code installed locally.
- An AWS Region where the intended Claude model or inference profile is available.
- IAM permissions to invoke that model or profile.
Before the first invocation, open the Amazon Bedrock console, choose the target Region, open Model catalog, select an Anthropic model, and submit the use-case details. Current Claude Code documentation says access is granted immediately after submission when account and permissions are correctly configured; enabling one model does not enable every model or Region.
In AWS Organizations, an administrator can submit the use case from the management account with PutUseCaseForModelAccess and the required permission. The supported-models list is the authority for current regional availability.

Install Claude Code
Prefer the current native installer or supported package-manager instructions in the Claude Code documentation. Common commands documented in the AWS guide include:

For managed fleets, inspect installer scripts where policy requires it, control versions, and test updates before broad rollout. The AWS CLI is optional for the wizard but useful for profiles, SSO, region checks, and diagnostics.
Fastest setup: the Bedrock login wizard
- Run
claudein a terminal. - At the login prompt, select 3rd-party platform.
- Select Amazon Bedrock.
- Choose a supported credential method.
- Confirm the AWS Region.
- Select or pin the available Claude models, then finish the wizard.
If you are already at the Claude Code prompt, run:
/setup-bedrockThe wizard can discover an AWS profile under ~/.aws, use a Bedrock API key, use access-key credentials, or use credentials already present in the environment. It writes the result to the env block of the Claude Code settings file, normally ~/.claude/settings.json. If CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is set, use the settings directory specified there instead.

Choose a credential method

For API keys, set:

Bedrock API calls are logged in CloudTrail, but the API key itself is not. Do not share one key when per-user attribution matters, and never place credentials in committed dotfiles, shell history, CI logs, or shared settings. See AWS Bedrock API keys.

Enable Bedrock and select a Region

}awsAuthRefresh runs when Claude Code detects expired credentials or an AWS credential error. It must invoke a command that updates AWS credential files or the SSO cache; interactive input is not supported. Complete browser flows through the displayed URL or code. If a VPN, TLS inspection, or proxy causes an SSO loop, remove awsAuthRefresh, run aws sso login --profile my-profile manually, and restart Claude Code.

- Use a dedicated role or account for Claude Code.
- Restrict resources, models, and Regions where practical.
- Separate developer, CI, and production permissions.
- Use explicit denies for unwanted models or Regions.
- Enable CloudTrail and cost monitoring instead of granting administrator access to solve setup errors.
Model selection and pinning
The current documentation lists Opus 5 as the built-in Bedrock primary-model default, with Sonnet 4.5 as the small/fast default unless your deployment pins another model. Defaults can change after a Claude Code update, so production deployments should pin deliberately.

Cross-Region prefixes can include us., eu., apac., jp., au., global., or us-gov. when supported. Application inference-profile ARNs can centralize routing and cost controls.
Aliases such as opus are not permanent pins. Claude Code may fall back when a preferred model is unavailable, sometimes only for the current session. Run:

- Start read-only:
Explain this repository without modifying files. Identify the test command, the main application entry point, and three areas that may need attention. - Discover tests:
Run the existing test suite. Do not change files yet. Summarize failures and propose the smallest fixes. - Approve a narrow edit:
Fix only the failing test-related issues, show the diff, and rerun the tests. Do not modify dependencies or configuration without asking first.
Use a branch or clean working tree, inspect every proposed diff, and keep a rollback path. Claude Code may request permission for files and tools; permission is not proof that a change is correct or architecturally appropriate.

Bedrock pricing is usage-based and varies by model, Region, inference mode, input and output tokens, and caching tier. Check the live Bedrock pricing page rather than relying on old per-million-token examples.
Claude Code exposes:

export ENABLE_PROMPT_CACHING_1H=1The one-hour cache is billed at a higher rate than the five-minute default, and caching is not available for every model or Region. Savings depend on repeated eligible context, workload, model, and cache tier; no fixed percentage is guaranteed.
- Begin with one service or module rather than an entire monorepo.
- Exclude generated artifacts, dependencies, binaries, secrets, and production data.
- Use repository instructions and narrowly scoped tasks.
- Pin expensive models for tasks that genuinely need them.
- Create AWS Budgets alerts and review Bedrock usage in Cost Explorer.
- Use CloudTrail for API activity and security review.
Troubleshooting

| Streaming error or truncated event | Ensure the proxy preserves application/vnd.amazon.eventstream and the response body. CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_BEDROCK_CONTENT_TYPE_GUARD=1 is a temporary diagnostic, not a gateway fix. |

Decision checklist
- Choose Bedrock for AWS-native identity, centralized billing, CloudTrail, account and Region controls, and existing enterprise cloud governance.
- Choose the Anthropic API for the shortest individual setup, Anthropic-native management, or features not available through Bedrock.
- Consider a gateway when several model providers need common budgets, routing, logging, or policy enforcement—but verify that it handles Bedrock authentication and event-stream responses correctly.
