The best free URL-to-Markdown tool depends on where the page is. Use Jina Reader when you can submit a public URL to a remote fetcher or API. Use MarkDownload when the page is already open in your browser and you need local, selectable exports. Use PageText when you want a simple paste-and-download interface built on Jina Reader. None of these choices is proven universally more accurate; check the Markdown produced from the sites you actually process.

Choose the workflow before choosing the tool

URL-to-Markdown conversion has two fundamentally different paths:

  • Remote fetch: a service requests the URL, extracts its content and returns Markdown-oriented text. This is the Jina Reader and PageText model.
  • Browser capture: an extension reads the page you have opened, then exports the selected or complete page. This is MarkDownload’s model.

A remote fetch is convenient for scripts, scheduled jobs and URLs that do not require your logged-in browser session. Browser capture is often better for pages that only render after your interaction, or when you need to select a specific article element. A public URL can still fail either path because of bot protection, authentication, JavaScript rendering, robots rules, paywalls or unusual page structure.

Quick comparison

Tool Workflow Documented output and features Free-use terms Important limitation
Jina Reader Prefix a URL for Reader access or call its API Extracted, LLM-friendly Markdown-oriented text; documentation and repository describe web pages, PDFs and Microsoft Office documents, with browser rendering for JavaScript-dependent pages Basic access is described as free; an API key provides a higher rate limit. Higher-rate use has rate limits and token-based charges; verify current terms. Fetching can be blocked or complex, and dynamic pages may need browser rendering.
MarkDownload Open a page in a supported browser and save it Markdown, HTML, DOCX, PDF, EPUB, plain text, MHTML and screenshot output; element selection, batch saving, built-in viewer and optional AI refinement using your own AI API The extension is described as free. Availability and behavior can vary by browser and page; no independent cross-browser or conversion test establishes a success rate.
PageText Paste a public URL into a web form Copy or download Markdown through the Jina Reader API The site describes the service as free and without limits; these are vendor claims that can change. It depends on Jina’s fetching and extraction, so a Jina access problem also affects PageText.

This is a documentation-based comparison, not a head-to-head accuracy or speed ranking.

Convert a URL with Jina Reader

Fast, no-code method

  1. Copy the complete public URL, including its https:// scheme and any required path.
  2. Place it after Jina Reader’s address prefix as shown in the Reader documentation.
  3. Open the resulting address and save or copy the returned Markdown-oriented text.
  4. Inspect headings, lists, links, code blocks, tables and image references before using the file in a knowledge base or build.

The basic route is useful for an occasional page. For an application, use the documented API and an API key when you need a higher rate limit. Keep the key server-side, set request timeouts, and record the source URL beside each result so you can re-fetch it later.

When JavaScript matters

Some sites deliver only a shell in the initial HTML and fill the article after JavaScript runs. Jina describes browser rendering options for such pages, but rendering does not guarantee access: login walls, CAPTCHAs and anti-bot systems can still prevent extraction. Compare the returned text with the visible page and treat missing sections as a conversion failure, not as an empty article.

Simple quality checks

  • Confirm the title and canonical URL are present.
  • Search for a sentence you can see on the source page.
  • Check that nested lists, tables and fenced code survived conversion.
  • Verify links were not rewritten incorrectly and that images have useful alt text or URLs.
  • Remove navigation, cookie notices and repeated footer text before publishing.

Save the page you are viewing with MarkDownload

Basic browser workflow

  1. Install MarkDownload from the project’s official distribution linked on markdownload.com.
  2. Open the target page and wait until the article and any lazy-loaded sections are visible.
  3. Use the extension action to select the whole page or a specific element, then choose Markdown as the export format.
  4. Open the generated file in a Markdown editor and correct headings, links, images and code fences.

MarkDownload also lists HTML, DOCX, PDF, EPUB, plain text, MHTML and screenshot output, plus batch saving and a built-in Markdown viewer. Its optional AI refinement uses an AI API supplied by you; review the provider’s terms before sending page content.

Why browser capture can succeed when remote fetching fails

Your browser may already have completed consent, navigation or client-side rendering that a remote request cannot reproduce. You can also select only the article element, avoiding menus and recommendation rails. The trade-off is operational: every page must be opened in a browser context, and batch jobs are less straightforward than an API call.

Privacy qualification

MarkDownload’s about page says processing occurs in the browser and that it collects no data. That is the vendor’s statement, not an independent security audit. Review extension permissions, keep the extension updated and avoid opening confidential pages in a workflow you do not control.

Use PageText when you want a paste-and-download form

  1. Open PageText.
  2. Paste a public URL into the form and start the conversion.
  3. Copy the displayed Markdown or download it, then perform the same structural checks you would perform on a Jina result.

PageText says it uses the Jina Reader API. Consequently, its convenience does not remove Jina’s access limitations. Claims on the page such as “under 2 seconds,” “no limits” and “100% free” are vendor claims, not independent measurements; do not design a production pipeline around them without confirming the current terms.

Pick by your actual requirement

You need a script or scheduled pipeline

Start with Jina Reader. It exposes a URL-oriented workflow and documented API access. Add retries with backoff for transient failures, cap concurrency to the service’s current limits, and persist the original URL, retrieval time and HTTP result with each Markdown file.

You need the page exactly as your browser sees it

Start with MarkDownload. It is the practical choice when login state, client-side rendering or manual element selection is essential. It is less suitable for unattended server jobs.

You need a one-off conversion without installing anything

Try PageText or the basic Jina Reader URL method. If the result omits content, switch to a browser capture rather than repeatedly submitting the same URL.

You need more than Markdown

MarkDownload explicitly lists the broadest set of export formats in this comparison. Jina’s repository describes processing PDFs and Office documents as well as web pages, while PageText focuses on Markdown output.

Common failures and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Only a loading shell or navigation is returned The page requires JavaScript rendering. Use the documented rendering path where available, wait for the page in a browser and capture it with MarkDownload, or choose a server-rendered version.
Access denied, CAPTCHA or bot-check page The site blocks automated fetching. Do not try to bypass the challenge. Use a page you are authorized to access in your browser, request an official feed/API, or ask the site owner for access.
Article text is mixed with menus and cookie notices The extractor selected the wrong content container. Use MarkDownload’s element selection, clean the Markdown manually, or adjust extraction options in your Jina-based integration.
Images or links are broken Relative URLs, hotlink protection or lazy loading were not resolved. Check the original URL base, download assets only where permitted, and retain descriptive alt text when an image cannot be embedded.
Request is slow or rate-limited Complex pages, rendering or current service limits. Set a sensible timeout, retry only transient errors, reduce concurrency and verify current Jina limits and API-key requirements.
Output is empty The URL redirects, requires authentication or returned no extractable article. Follow the final URL, test an accessible page, sign in through your own browser for authorized content, or use the site’s export/feed.

Reliability, privacy and cost considerations

  • Reliability: treat conversion as an extraction step that needs validation. Keep the source URL and a retrieval timestamp, and spot-check every new domain.
  • Privacy: a remote reader receives the URL and fetches it from its infrastructure. Do not submit private or authenticated URLs unless the service’s current policy and your authorization permit it. MarkDownload’s local-processing and no-data-collection statements come from MarkDownload itself.
  • Cost: Jina documents free basic access, higher API-key rate limits and token-based charges for higher-rate use. PageText advertises free use, but its terms are vendor-controlled. MarkDownload is described as a free extension; optional AI refinement may involve your own paid AI API.
  • Maintenance: websites change markup, JavaScript behavior and anti-bot rules. Pin your own parser version where possible, monitor extraction quality and keep a fallback browser workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If your real need is a clean visual record rather than editable Markdown, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

One request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API also supports full-page and element captures, device and viewport settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Can these tools convert a private Google Doc or members-only page?

Not through a public URL alone. Use an authorized browser session or an official export/API, and do not send credentials to a service unless its current policy permits that workflow.

Should I preserve the original HTML as well as Markdown?

Yes for important content. Keeping the source URL, retrieval date and original HTML (where permitted) gives you a way to diagnose later extraction changes.

Is Markdown conversion the same as scraping?

No. Scraping retrieves content; conversion then maps that content into Markdown. A successful request can still produce incomplete or poorly structured Markdown.

Can I claim one of these is the most accurate?

No independent head-to-head test establishes that. Accuracy varies by site structure, rendering requirements and the elements you choose to capture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the simplest free URL-to-Markdown option?

For a one-off public page, paste the URL into PageText or use Jina Reader’s documented URL method. Use MarkDownload instead when the page is already open and needs browser-rendered content.

Which option is best for automated jobs?

Jina Reader is the documented URL/API workflow. Confirm its current rate limits and any token-based charges before scheduling high-volume jobs.

Do I need ScreenshotNeo to create Markdown?

No. ScreenshotNeo is for clean screenshots and PDFs, not a replacement for text extraction. It is useful when a visual capture is the required output.
