On a supported Android 15 device, you can archive an eligible app at Settings → Apps → [app] → Archive. Android removes the installed app software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications, but keeps the app icon and its data on the phone. Tap the dimmed icon later to download the app again, provided it is still available from the relevant app store and you have enough space to reinstall it. Archiving is a reversible way to reclaim some app storage—not a backup or a fix for a phone filled with photos, videos, downloads, or retained app data. Google’s Android instructions apply to Android 15 and later on supported devices; menus and availability can differ by manufacturer.

What app archiving removes—and what it keeps

Archiving removes the installed app package while preserving its icon and user data locally. That makes it different from uninstalling: the app is absent until you download it again, but its data is retained rather than deliberately removed as part of the archive action. Retained data is not an independent backup; what you can recover also depends on how the app stores information and whether it supports account sync or backup.

Action App software App data Icon Notifications What happens next
Archive Removed Retained on the device Remains, usually dimmed with an archive indicator Stopped Download the app again to restore it
Uninstall Removed May be removed; recovery depends on the app and backups Removed Stopped Reinstall and sign in or restore data if available
Disable Usually remains installed but cannot run Retained May remain or be hidden, depending on the device Stopped Re-enable it; generally offered for supported preinstalled apps
Clear cache Retained User data retained; cached files removed Remains Usually unaffected Cache may be recreated as you use the app

Google says archiving removes permissions and temporary files as well as the installed software, and stops notifications. Permissions may need to be granted again after restoration. Google’s Android Help page describes the archive behavior.

How to archive an app manually

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then select the app you want to archive.
  3. Tap Archive and confirm if prompted.

The app should remain in the app drawer or on the home screen, but look dimmed and show an archive or cloud-style marker. On some phones, menu labels or locations differ. If you do not see Archive, check the troubleshooting section below rather than assuming every Android 15 device exposes the same control.

Choose apps that are safe to leave offline

Good candidates are large apps you rarely open, such as an occasional game, a seasonal shopping app, or a travel app you will not need until a later trip. Prefer apps you can readily download again and whose important information is synchronized or otherwise recoverable.

Keep apps installed if you depend on them without internet, need their alerts, or might not be able to reinstall them promptly. That includes offline maps, authentication and security tools, medical or emergency apps, and work or school apps needed on short notice. Check that sensitive information is synchronized or exportable before archiving financial, health, enterprise, password-manager, or authenticator apps.

How to restore an archived app

The simplest method is to tap its dimmed icon and choose the restore or reinstall option. The phone downloads the app again through its store. You can also look for the restore control in Settings → Apps → App info or on the app’s details page in Google Play. After it finishes installing, open the app and check its account and data state.

Restoration depends on the app remaining available and compatible in the relevant store, an internet connection in most cases, and enough free space for the download. The restored version may be the latest compatible version, not the exact version previously installed. Google says users can pick up where they left off when an app is still available on Google Play, but this is not a guarantee for every app or its locally stored data. Google Play’s developer explanation describes that availability condition.

  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance (A1 performance is 1500 read IOPS, 500 write IOPS. Based on internal testing. Results may vary based on host device, app type, and other factors.)

If restoration fails

  • Connect to Wi-Fi or confirm mobile data is working.
  • Free space for the reinstall; remove downloads or other expendable files if necessary.
  • Check the app’s Google Play listing and confirm the correct Google account is active.
  • Consider whether the app was delisted, made incompatible, or restricted in your region.
  • If it came from another app store or was sideloaded, do not assume Google Play can restore it; check the original source.
  • If the icon is gone, the app may have been uninstalled rather than archived. Search for it in the store and check whether its data was backed up or synchronized.

Automatic archiving: Google Play and Android 15 controls

Google Play’s automatic app archiving predates Android 15. When enabled and storage is needed, Play can archive eligible infrequently used apps; Google describes a flow where a user who tries to install an app while out of space is prompted to allow unused apps to be archived. This is distinct from the Android 15 manual Archive control.

To look for the Play Store setting, open Google Play Store → profile picture → Settings → General → Automatically archive apps. Labels and availability can vary; if the item is not shown, search Play Store Settings for “Automatically archive apps.” The feature depends on app eligibility—Google’s developer guidance identifies apps published using the Android App Bundle format. Google Play’s auto-archive documentation explains the eligibility and behavior.

Android 15 also documents a per-app setting called Manage app if unused. To prevent automatic management for one app, go to Settings → Apps → [app] and turn off Manage app if unused. Exact wording can vary. This does not prevent you from archiving that app manually. Consider turning it off for apps whose alerts or immediate availability matter.

How much space does archiving free?

It depends on the app: archiving removes its installed software and temporary files, but leaves user data behind. Before acting, check Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage & cache to see how much is attributed to the app and its data; the labels and breakdown vary by phone. If the app has accumulated large downloads, offline content, or other local data, archiving may leave much of its storage use untouched.

Google says auto-archive can free up to nearly 60% of an app’s storage space. That is an upper-bound product claim, not a typical result or a promise for a particular app; the retained data means actual savings vary. Archiving generally offers less potential recovery than uninstalling an app whose local data is also expendable.

When archiving will not solve the storage problem

If app archives barely change the available space, inspect what is actually occupying the phone. Large videos, photo libraries, messaging attachments, downloads, offline maps, podcasts, and game data can outweigh the app package itself.

  • Photos and videos: Verify that important files are backed up before removing local copies. Check whether the photo app’s delete control removes only the device copy or deletes items from the cloud library too.
  • Downloads and offline content: Remove files or maps you no longer need, especially where they can be downloaded again.
  • Large app data: Review an app’s own storage tools before clearing or deleting its data; doing so can remove saved content or sign-in state.
  • Cache: Use Settings → Apps → [app] → Storage & cache → Clear cache if cached files are unusually large. This keeps the app installed, but the cache can grow again.
  • Uninstall: For a disposable app whose local data is backed up or unnecessary, uninstalling can reclaim more space than archiving. Confirm what will be lost first.

For files you want off the phone, a compatible USB-C drive or a microSD card in a phone with a card slot can help move photos and documents; neither is a universal expansion of app storage. Cloud storage can help with backed-up media, but does not increase internal capacity by itself: verify backup completion before deleting local copies. Google’s account storage is shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail, and plan details vary by country and account. Google One’s Android help explains storage and plan availability.

Why the Archive button may be missing

Google documents manual archiving for Android 15 and later, but notes that some actions require supported hardware. Manufacturers can change Settings layouts or omit a control, and eligibility also depends on the app and store. Preinstalled apps may offer Disable instead. Apps installed outside Google Play may not have a Google Play restore route. For example, a Motorola Android 15 guide says only Google Play-installed apps support the feature on that device; that is a device-specific limitation, not a universal Android rule. The Motorola guide sets out its device’s behavior.

  1. Check Settings → About phone/tablet → Android version to confirm the version.
  2. Install available Android and Google Play system updates, then check the app’s details again.
  3. Check the app’s store listing and try its details page for a restore or archive option.
  4. If Archive remains unavailable, consider clearing cache, disabling a supported preinstalled app, or uninstalling only after weighing what each action removes.
