Yes, Packt offers legitimate free ebooks and learning content—but its entire catalog is not free. Packt’s “free” offers can mean a no-cost Free Learning title, temporary subscription access, a 7-day trial, or a book permanently redeemed with a paid Premium credit. Those options have very different costs and ownership rules.
For no-cost options, start with Packt’s official Free Learning area. If you are considering a subscription, check whether you need temporary library access or permanent ownership of a particular eligible title.
What “free” means on Packt

The important distinction is that a book viewed through Packt’s subscription library is not automatically yours. Permanent access generally applies to titles successfully redeemed with a valid credit or otherwise purchased.
Where to find Packt’s free ebooks
- Go to Packt’s official website.
- Open Free Learning from the product navigation.
- Review the available titles and the conditions shown for each one.
- Create or sign in to a Packt account if required.
- Use the page’s claim, download, or library control.
- Confirm that the title appears in My Library before leaving the page.
Packt changes its promotions, navigation, available titles, and regional offerings. Avoid relying on old lists of “free ebook of the day” titles or publishing a specific title as free without checking its current Packt page.
How to claim and download a title with a Packt credit
Packt Premium provides one monthly credit after a successful subscription renewal. The credit can be exchanged for one eligible ebook or video. On the title’s overview page, look for the credit-redemption button. Packt has historically used labels such as Buy with 1 credit and Use credit for free eBook, although the wording may change.
- Sign in to Packt’s subscription service.
- Search for the book or video.
- Open its overview page.
- Select the credit-redemption control.
- Confirm the redemption.
- Open the title from your library.
- Choose an available download format.
Most Packt ebooks are offered as PDF and EPUB, and some also offer MOBI. Packt’s help documentation says that titles published after August 25, 2021 may not include a MOBI download, so do not assume that every title will work with a particular Kindle workflow.
Packt Premium: the “free ebook” option that requires payment
On the US-facing page checked on August 18, 2026, Packt lists Premium at $29.99 per month. That is not a free ebook with no payment; it is a subscription that includes a monthly ownership credit. At that displayed price, 12 months would cost $359.88 before taxes or promotional pricing.

Packt’s comparison also shows a library-only plan at $19.99 per month. It is designed for online access to the library but does not provide the Premium monthly ownership credit. Prices, taxes, promotions, currency, and availability can vary by country.

Do you keep Packt ebooks after canceling?
You keep titles successfully redeemed with credits, but not everything you read through the library.
- Subscription-library access normally ends when the paid subscription term expires.
- Titles redeemed with valid credits remain available to the account after cancellation, according to Packt’s current subscription information.
- Unused credits expire when the subscription is canceled.
- Canceling normally stops future recurring payments without ending access before the already-paid term expires.
“Keep forever” therefore applies to owned or redeemed titles—not to every book opened while subscribed.

Not every book displayed in Packt’s catalog is eligible. Packt’s help documentation says credits and ebook discounts do not apply to some externally licensed content, including titles associated with Wiley, Wrox, Sybex, and For Dummies.
Always check the individual book page for eligibility. A title may be visible in the catalog but unavailable for credit redemption, available only for online reading, restricted in your region, or listed on a store page rather than the subscription title page.
What happens during Packt’s 7-day free trial?
Packt’s subscription page currently presents 7-day free access during signup. A trial is temporary access, not proof that a downloaded book will remain yours permanently.

Before starting, inspect the checkout and terms for:
- Whether payment details are required.
- The date and amount of the post-trial charge.
- The deadline and method for cancellation.
- Whether trial users receive a credit.
- Whether material downloaded during the trial remains accessible afterward.
- Whether trial reading counts toward any bonus-credit program.
Packt’s public pages do not clearly establish every one of these edge cases. Treat the checkout screen and current terms as authoritative, and set a reminder before the trial ends if you do not want a paid renewal.
Can subscribers earn another credit by reading?
Packt has documented a feature in which subscribers earn a bonus download credit after completing 40 sections during a billing month. Packt defines a section as a single book page or video section, and the reward was documented as potentially appearing within 24 hours.
However, the associated help page was not retrievable during verification. Packt has also stated that sections completed during a trial or after a subscription ends do not count. Because the mechanism may have changed, check the current help center or your account before relying on it.
What if the download button is missing?
- Confirm that you are signed in to the correct Packt account.
- Check My Library, not only your store purchase history.
- Verify that the title was redeemed rather than merely opened.
- Check whether the title is online-only or externally licensed.
- Try Packt’s web reader or app.
- Contact Packt support if the title appears as owned but no download format is offered.
Also check the edition, publication date, software versions used in the examples, and whether source code is included. A free technical ebook may be outdated even when the download itself is legitimate.

Are unofficial free Packt PDFs safe and legal?
The reliable route is Packt’s own website, official subscription service, or a Packt-authorized promotion. Unofficial “free PDF” repositories may distribute unauthorized copies, outdated editions, altered files, or unsafe downloads. That does not mean every third-party download is malicious, but it does mean you cannot reliably verify authorization, file integrity, updates, or associated code.
Packt’s account-registration terms also state that free content may be removed and that Packt retains control over access to its content. Use official sources when you need the correct edition, legitimate access, and accompanying code files.

Premium is most defensible if you expect to consult several Packt titles, want broad online access, and value one permanent ebook or video each month. It may also make sense if the digital and print discounts are useful.
It is a poor fit if you want one specific book, need permanent ownership of everything you read, cannot use a credit on the desired title, or are unlikely to cancel before a trial converts to paid billing. At $29.99 per month, the book is only “free” in the sense that it has no additional per-book charge after you pay for the subscription.
If you mainly want online reading, compare the displayed $19.99 library plan with Premium. Choose Premium only if the monthly permanent-download credit and other benefits justify the additional recurring cost.
