For most people using Windows 11, Microsoft Defender is the best free antivirus to start with: it is built into Windows, provides real-time protection, and performed strongly in AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 evaluation. A reputable third-party free antivirus can also be a reasonable choice if you prefer its interface or value a particular extra feature. On Mac and mobile devices, the answer depends on what “antivirus” can actually do on that platform.
“Free antivirus” can mean several different things: ongoing real-time protection, a limited free tier that promotes paid features, a time-limited trial, or a scanner you run only when needed. Those options are not interchangeable. The safest choice is usually one active real-time antivirus, kept up to date, alongside sensible updates, account security, and backups.
Quick recommendations by device
- Windows 11: Start with Microsoft Defender, which is included in Windows Security. Consider another free antivirus only if it offers a feature or experience you actually want.
- Mac: Keep macOS and apps updated and use the built-in security protections. Third-party antivirus is situational, not a requirement simply because the computer is a Mac.
- Android: Keep Google Play Protect enabled and install apps from trusted sources. A reputable security app may add web, scam, or privacy features.
- iPhone or iPad: Do not expect a conventional antivirus app to scan the whole system or other apps like a Windows antivirus. Prioritize updates, account security, phishing awareness, and device-theft controls.
- Suspected infection: A trusted on-demand scanner or professional help may be appropriate. Do not install several real-time antivirus products at once.
What “free antivirus” includes

Check the exact edition before installing. A feature displayed in a product dashboard may require payment, and product names, availability, and included features can differ by country, operating system, and edition. A free scanner should not be treated as a replacement for real-time protection unless its vendor explicitly says it provides that mode.

Microsoft Defender: the no-download default
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is integrated with Windows Security, so most Windows users do not need to download another antivirus to get a baseline. For ordinary Windows 11 use, it is a sensible free choice if it is active, updated, and not undermined by unsafe software or account practices.

In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 cycle, Microsoft Defender Antivirus version 4.18 scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. This is a result for that product version, operating system, and test period—not a guarantee of perfect protection or a ranking for every device. See the AV-TEST Windows results.
Before adding anything, open Windows Security and check that there are no protection warnings. Keep Windows Update current, confirm real-time protection is enabled, and enable cloud-delivered protection and tamper protection where available. Back up important files separately. If you install a different real-time antivirus, check Windows Security afterward to make sure a protection provider is active.
Avast Free Antivirus
Avast offers a free antivirus tier as well as paid plans. It may suit someone who wants a third-party interface or particular web-protection features, but expect possible upgrade prompts and check which functions are included in the specific free edition. Avast’s comparison page presents multiple tiers and platform families; it is a vendor page, so verify the exact free features for your device and region.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 results list Avast Free Antivirus versions 26.4/26.5 with 6/6/6 scores for protection, performance, and usability. That strong test result does not make it automatically preferable to Defender: also consider advertising, privacy terms, performance on your hardware, and ease of removal.
AVG AntiVirus Free
AVG AntiVirus Free is another established Windows option. AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 cycle lists versions 26.4/26.5 with 6/6/6 scores. As with Avast, compare the actual free-tier features and upgrade prompts with what you already have rather than assuming a third-party product is an upgrade just because it has a high lab score. AVG and Avast are part of the same broad corporate ecosystem, so the two should not be assumed to be wholly independent choices. See AVG’s free antivirus page for its current product offering.
Avira Free Security and Panda Free Antivirus
Avira Free Security and Panda Free Antivirus are other free Windows options identified in AV-Comparatives’ December 2025 feature comparison. Their free features and availability may differ by market or change, so inspect the download page and plan details before installing. Avira’s free antivirus page and Panda’s free antivirus page are the appropriate starting points. Do not assume that every feature in a broader security dashboard is included free.

How to read antivirus test results
Independent tests are useful evidence, not a promise. AV-TEST scores protection, performance, and usability, each out of six; its approval threshold is at least 10 total points for the relevant test. AV-Comparatives runs distinct tests such as real-world protection, malware protection, performance, and false-positive evaluations. For example, its February–May 2026 real-world test evaluated home-user security products on updated Windows systems, while its March 2026 malware-protection test used fully updated 64-bit Windows 11 systems.

A Windows score says nothing by itself about the product’s Android or Mac performance. Versions change, tests cover particular conditions, and detection is only one part of security: false alarms and performance impact matter too. Even a strong result cannot stop someone from handing over a password, approving a fraudulent payment, or granting a scammer remote access.
Do you need third-party antivirus on Mac or mobile?
Mac
macOS includes built-in security mechanisms, including malware detection and protections around applications. Macs are not immune to malware, but installing third-party antivirus solely because a computer is a Mac is not necessary for everyone. Additional software may make sense if you manage Macs alongside Windows devices, share files across platforms, need business administration, want specific web or privacy features, or are dealing with a known threat. Check that a product’s Mac version actually provides the protection you need; a Windows test score is not evidence about its Mac edition.

Android
Keep Google Play Protect enabled, install system and app updates, and avoid apps from untrusted sources. A third-party security app can add anti-phishing, scam, privacy, or breach-monitoring features, but those extras do not make risky sideloading safe. AV-TEST’s May 2026 Android evaluation tested 12 mobile-security products using default settings; its results are specific to Android and that test cycle. See AV-TEST’s mobile-security results.
iPhone and iPad
iOS’s sandboxing, code signing, and App Store controls mean ordinary security apps generally cannot scan all system files or inspect other apps as desktop antivirus can. An app marketed as mobile security may instead offer malicious-site warnings, scam alerts, breach monitoring, VPN service, or Wi-Fi checks. Those can be useful, but they are not system-wide malware scanning. Keep iOS current, use strong unique account passwords and multifactor authentication, and enable available device-theft and recovery controls.

Paid suites often sell convenience and bundled services, not proof that free products cannot detect malware. Consider paying if you specifically want support, family controls, multi-device management, identity monitoring, or a VPN bundle. Compare what is included, the number of devices, and renewal terms on the vendor’s current checkout page; prices and introductory offers change. A VPN, password manager, identity monitor, and antivirus solve different problems.

Install and verify a free antivirus safely
- Identify your operating system and version. Confirm the product supports it. If the operating system is no longer supported, prioritize upgrading or replacing it rather than layering on more antivirus.
- Go directly to the official vendor site or official app store. Avoid search ads, download mirrors, file-sharing links, “cracked” copies, and repackaged installers.
- Confirm it is genuinely free. Check whether the offer is an ongoing free tier, a time-limited trial, or a manual scanner, and verify the features included in your country and platform.
- Remove an existing real-time antivirus if you are replacing it. Follow its official uninstall instructions and restart if requested. Do not run competing real-time products together.
- Read each installation screen. Decline optional browser extensions, cleanup utilities, VPN trials, or other add-ons unless you want them.
- Update and scan. Let the application update its security intelligence, run an initial scan, and confirm real-time protection is enabled.
- Verify status. Check for a current update timestamp, a recent completed scan, no unresolved high-severity detections, and an active free tier rather than an expired trial. On Windows, check Windows Security to confirm protection is recognized.
If installation fails, first remove a previous security product using its official uninstaller, restart, and install pending operating-system updates. Then try a fresh installer from the vendor and confirm system compatibility. If malware is blocking installation, use the vendor’s official rescue or cleanup guidance rather than downloading tools from pop-ups or unofficial sites.
One real-time antivirus at a time
Two products continuously monitoring files can slow a device, duplicate warnings, interfere with each other, or produce confusing security status. Use one active real-time antivirus. A reputable on-demand scanner can sometimes provide a second opinion, but it is not automatically a substitute for continuous protection. After uninstalling or switching products, restart if requested and confirm that Windows Security or the new application reports active protection.
How to spot a fake antivirus alert
A browser page that claims your computer is infected, flashes a fake scan, and urges you to call a phone number is not proof of infection. Do not call, pay, download its “fix,” or give remote access. Close the tab or browser, then open the security application directly from the Start menu or Applications folder and check its status there. Download security software only from the official vendor or platform store.

Antivirus can help detect and block malicious software, but it does not guarantee protection from phishing, fraudulent support calls, account takeover, unsafe extensions, or lost data. Reduce those risks with:
- Automatic operating-system, browser, and app updates.
- Unique passwords stored in a password manager and multifactor authentication on important accounts.
- Backups that are versioned or kept offline, with restoration tested. Ransomware protection is not a backup.
- Software downloads from official publishers; avoid pirated software and unauthorized activators.
- Careful review of unexpected login links, attachments, urgent payment demands, one-time-code requests, and remote-access requests.
- Standard rather than administrator accounts for routine use where practical, plus device encryption and account-recovery details.
If you think the device is infected
Do not respond to a suspicious alert by buying whatever it advertises or installing multiple products on the affected device. If you suspect active compromise, disconnect it from the internet. From a trusted, clean device, change critical passwords and contact banks or services if payment details or credentials may have been exposed. Run a trusted offline or rescue scan where available; back up only clearly safe personal files. For persistent malware, ransomware, or signs that an attacker had access, consider professional remediation or a clean operating-system reinstall. A scan can detect or quarantine threats, but it cannot guarantee that every compromised file or account has been restored safely.
