The Framework Laptop 12 is easier to repair and upgrade than most low-cost laptops, but it is not the cheapest way to buy a complete computer. In the US, Framework lists it from $549 as a DIY configuration and $799 pre-built. The lower price is for a partially configured system, not a ready-to-use Windows laptop. Repairability can help owners keep a computer in service longer; whether that saves money depends on what you buy, how long you keep it, and the cost and availability of parts.
The short verdict
Choose the Framework Laptop 12 if you want a small touchscreen convertible, expect to keep it for years, and value being able to replace common parts yourself or through a repair shop. Its standard memory and storage, replaceable battery and display, modular ports, and extensive repair guides make it unusually serviceable.
Choose a conventional budget laptop if the priority is the lowest price for a complete machine, more performance per dollar, a larger screen, or better battery life. A Chromebook may be enough for web-based schoolwork; a refurbished business laptop may offer a stronger keyboard and repairability at a lower price. The Framework 12 is best understood as a repairable long-term platform with entry-level performance, not a bargain laptop that automatically pays for itself.

To compare fairly, total the price of the finished DIY machine—including memory, storage, charger, Expansion Cards, operating system if needed, and shipping—and compare it with complete laptops of similar size, screen type, memory, storage, and warranty. DIY is most compelling if you already own compatible parts, prefer Linux, or want to choose components yourself. It is not automatically the cheaper option.
What is the Laptop 12?
The 2025 Framework Laptop 12 is a 12.2-inch, 16:10 touchscreen convertible with a 360-degree hinge and support for MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 styluses. It weighs 1.3kg and has a 50Wh battery. Framework offers Intel Core i3-1315U and Core i5-1334U processor options, both with integrated Intel UHD graphics.
Its 1920×1200 display is rated above 400 nits, refreshes at 60Hz, and covers 50% of the NTSC color gamut. That is suitable for everyday work, reading, video calls, and notes, but not a strong choice for color-critical editing. The glossy touchscreen can reflect light, and the relatively small panel can feel cramped when multitasking.
Other practical details matter at this price: the webcam is 1080p and has a hardware privacy switch, but there is no fingerprint reader or Windows Hello facial recognition. The full-size keyboard is non-backlit. The chassis is ruggedized plastic rather than a premium metal shell. Framework lists a one-year limited warranty; read the current product and warranty terms for the applicable configuration and region.
What repairability means in practice
Framework’s main difference is not simply that the case opens. It makes many parts available as replaceable assemblies and publishes instructions for servicing them. The Laptop 12 uses one user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM slot, supporting up to 48GB, and one M.2 2230 NVMe SSD slot. Its four Expansion Card bays let owners select ports such as USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, or card readers instead of treating every port as a permanent part of the mainboard.

iFixit gives the Laptop 12 a 10/10 repairability score. That is a repairability assessment—not a score for performance, durability, battery life, value, or guaranteed parts availability. Its repair-guide hub lists procedures for many of the components above.

“Repairable” does not mean every fix is risk-free or inexpensive. A repair can require a whole assembly rather than a small component; a connector can be damaged, a part can be incompatible, or a required item can be out of stock. Owners should check the compatible parts listings and repair instructions before treating a potential repair as a guaranteed saving.
How it compares with budget alternatives
There is no single “traditional budget laptop.” The right comparison depends on what you need and how much risk or repair work you will accept.
$250–$450 Chromebooks
A low-cost Chromebook is often the more rational buy for a student or family whose work is mostly browser-based. It costs less up front, and simple web and school tasks may not need Windows applications. Some models have good battery life. The trade-offs are more limited desktop-software compatibility and, on many inexpensive machines, soldered memory and fewer practical upgrade options. Support periods vary by model. If your needs are met by ChromeOS and a damaged device would simply be replaced, the Framework’s repairability may not justify its premium.
$400–$700 Windows laptops
Conventional Windows models often offer more recent processors, larger displays, retail discounts, or stronger performance for the same spend. But serviceability varies by exact model: memory may be soldered, batteries may be difficult to remove, and ports may be fixed to the mainboard. Compare the service manual and parts access for the specific laptop, not just the manufacturer’s name. A cheaper model can be better value even if it is less repairable, particularly for someone likely to replace it before a repair is needed.
Refurbished business laptops
Refurbished ThinkPads, Dell Latitudes, and HP EliteBooks or ProBooks can offer business-oriented keyboards, larger screens, and accessible memory, storage, or batteries for less than a new Framework. Some recent ThinkPads also score well for repairability; iFixit’s laptop scorecard shows why it is worth checking specific models.
Used machines bring different risks: an older processor, battery wear, cosmetic damage, uncertain refurbishment quality, and a shorter remaining warranty. Check the exact model’s service documentation, battery condition, seller’s return window, and warranty before buying. A refurbished business laptop may be the better value if you do not need a touchscreen convertible or Framework’s modular ports.

Framework Laptop 13
A refurbished Framework Laptop 13, when available, may be a better fit for buyers who want a larger display or more performance while retaining Framework’s repair ecosystem. Outlet stock and prices fluctuate; do not assume a particular model or price will be available. Compare the actual configuration and condition against the Laptop 12 rather than treating refurbished stock as a permanent alternative.
Performance and everyday experience
The Laptop 12’s Core i3-1315U and Core i5-1334U are low-power, 13th-generation Intel processors. The i3 has two performance cores and four efficiency cores (eight threads); the i5 has two performance cores and eight efficiency cores (12 threads). Framework lists 15W sustained processor power, with boost behavior depending on operating mode. These chips are suited to browsing, office work, video calls, school assignments, note-taking, streaming, light coding, and modest image editing.
Integrated UHD graphics are not intended for modern AAA gaming, 3D rendering, serious video editing, or other graphics-heavy work. Sustained CPU-heavy jobs and large software builds are also a weaker fit than on a faster laptop. Reviewers have flagged limited performance, thermals, and battery life as trade-offs; see the PCWorld review, RTINGS review, and Engadget review for independent assessments.
Replaceable memory and storage do not make the processor or graphics upgradeable independently. A future mainboard replacement is an option, not a promise of indefinite performance upgrades: its value depends on compatible boards being available at a reasonable price, and on software and other components remaining supported. The one memory slot and 2230 SSD format also constrain choices compared with some conventional systems.
The convertible design is a real benefit if you will use tablet, tent, or presentation mode, annotate documents, or take handwritten notes. Stylus support is not the same as an included pen: check the configuration and buy a compatible stylus separately if needed. If you will use a laptop only as a clamshell, the touchscreen and 360-degree hinge may be features you pay for without using.

Total cost of ownership = purchase price + accessories + repairs + upgrades + software + downtime − resale value.

The outcome depends on real costs and what the alternative would have been. For example, compare a finished Framework against a cheaper laptop that is replaced once, not against a laptop that somehow never needs maintenance. Then consider whether a repair is economically sensible when it occurs.
- If you normally replace a $350 laptop after three or four years: an $799 pre-built Framework may cost more unless it stays useful substantially longer, earns meaningful resale value, or avoids a replacement you would otherwise make.
- If the battery wears out after several years: replacing it may extend the laptop’s life, but count the battery price, shipping, any repair-shop labor, and whether the processor still meets your needs.
- If the display or keyboard breaks: a documented, replaceable assembly can make repair more feasible. It can still be expensive, and a repair may not make sense if the laptop is already too slow for your work.
- If the mainboard fails or becomes outdated: replacing it could preserve the screen, keyboard, battery, and chassis. That benefit depends on compatible boards continuing to be sold, a price below buying a whole laptop, and a worthwhile performance improvement. None of those should be assumed in advance.
Repairability creates the option to extend a laptop’s useful life; it does not guarantee a lower total cost. It has the strongest financial case for owners who keep machines for a long time, can perform simple repairs, reuse components, or would otherwise replace an entire laptop after a repairable failure.
Does repairability make it the greener choice?
Replacing a battery, keyboard, SSD, screen, or port rather than an entire laptop can reduce whole-device replacement and associated waste. Reusing the chassis and other parts after a board change may help too. Framework also lists recycled plastic in several components, carbon-offset shipping, recyclable packaging, and an optional carbon-capture purchase on its product information.
Those features do not establish that the Laptop 12 has a lower lifecycle footprint than every alternative. Manufacturing a modular device still uses materials; replacement-part production and shipping also have impacts. Long-term benefits depend on parts availability, software support, the laptop remaining useful, and owners actually repairing it. Without a comparative lifecycle assessment, the careful conclusion is that repairability can reduce waste—not that environmental superiority is proven.

Buy it if
- You specifically want a small touchscreen convertible and expect to use the hinge or stylus support.
- You expect to keep the laptop for at least five years and value maintaining it rather than replacing it.
- You are comfortable replacing parts yourself, or have access to a repair shop and are willing to pay for service.
- You value standard memory and SSD access, replaceable parts, or user-selectable ports.
- You use Linux, already own compatible components, or want to select the DIY configuration.
- You accept modest performance and buy repairability as a practical benefit, not as a guarantee of future-proofing.
Skip it if
- Your maximum budget is below roughly $600 for a complete new computer.
- You need the best performance or battery life per dollar, a larger screen, or strong gaming and creative performance.
- You mostly do browser, office, streaming, or school work and a Chromebook covers your needs.
- You do not want to shop for parts, assemble a system, troubleshoot, or pay for repairs.
- Your school or workplace replaces managed devices instead of servicing them, or you expect to replace your own laptop after a few years regardless.
- You need a backlit keyboard, biometric login, or a color-accurate display.
Consider refurbished instead if
You want a lower purchase price, a larger screen, or a business-class keyboard and can accept an older machine with variable battery condition. Verify condition, support, parts access, and warranty for the exact ThinkPad, Latitude, or EliteBook you are considering.
Is repairability the future of affordable computing?
It is a useful direction, but the Laptop 12 does not prove that modularity alone makes computers affordable. A genuinely affordable repairable laptop needs more than accessible screws: standardized parts, reasonable replacement prices, clear documentation, software support, and a dependable parts supply all matter. The Framework 12 demonstrates a repair-oriented design in a small convertible. Its higher complete-system price, entry-level performance, and uncertain long-term parts economics show what still has to work for repairability to become the cheaper choice for more people.
For now, the Framework Laptop 12 is the better laptop to maintain, not necessarily the better laptop to buy cheaply. It makes the most sense when its repair options match how you plan to own and use it.
