Fractal Design’s Epoch XL is an airflow-focused ATX mid-tower for builders using oversized graphics cards, large liquid coolers, E-ATX hardware, or selected rear-connector motherboards. It includes three 140 mm Momentum fans, supports graphics cards up to 425 mm with front fans installed, and accepts radiators up to 360 mm in both the front and top.
The important caveat is its size: despite the XL name and unusually generous clearances, Fractal classifies it as a mid-tower. That makes it flexible for high-end systems, but potentially excessive for a conventional gaming PC.
Fractal Design Epoch XL: specifications at a glance
The Epoch XL is available in Black Solid, Black tempered glass, White tempered glass, Black RGB tempered glass, and White RGB tempered glass configurations. Standard versions include three Momentum 14 fans, while RGB versions use three Momentum 14 RGB fans. The case measures 490 × 240 × 490 mm without feet, protrusions, and screws. Its packaging measures 602 × 353 × 606 mm, so buyers should also consider delivery access and the space needed to unpack it.

Cooling is the Epoch XL’s main selling point
The cooling claim comes from the case’s layout rather than from a single specification. The Epoch XL has ventilated front and top panels, three preinstalled 140 mm fans, and room for substantial additional cooling hardware.
- The front supports three 120 mm fans and radiators up to 280 or 360 mm.
- The top supports three 120 mm, two 140 mm, or two 180 mm fans, plus radiators up to 280 or 360 mm.
- The rear has one 120 mm fan position and supports a 120 mm radiator.
- No bottom fan or bottom radiator mount is listed in the official specifications.
Fractal says the included Momentum fans use LCP blades and true fluid-dynamic bearings. Larger 140 mm fans can move a useful amount of air at relatively modest speeds, but that does not prove that every Epoch XL build will be cooler or quieter than every competing case. Results depend on the graphics card cooler, CPU cooler, radiator and fan thickness, fan curves, ambient temperature, and dust accumulation.
Fractal’s product page also reproduces favorable review excerpts about thermal and acoustic performance. Those are manufacturer-selected testimonials, not independent standardized test results. The Epoch XL’s design supports strong airflow potential; a blanket performance verdict requires comparable testing.

Component compatibility: the clearances that matter
Graphics cards and front radiators
Fractal lists up to 425 mm of graphics-card length with front fans installed. A front-mounted radiator reduces that allowance by the radiator’s thickness. For example, a 30 mm-thick front radiator leaves approximately 395 mm before other fit considerations.
That calculation is only a starting point. Check the complete GPU length, height, thickness, power-connector location, radiator and fan dimensions, and the bend radius required for the power cable. A card that fits on paper may still create a difficult cable-routing or side-panel situation.

Motherboards
Front-facing connector layouts support E-ATX boards up to 275 mm, ATX, micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX. The case also supports selected rear-connector ATX and micro-ATX motherboards. This is useful for builders using compatible rear-connector ecosystems, but it is not universal rear-connector motherboard compatibility: the board must match the supported size and connector placement.

CPU coolers and liquid cooling
Air coolers up to 176 mm tall are supported. The front and top can each accommodate a radiator up to 280 or 360 mm, while the rear supports a 120 mm radiator.
A top-mounted 360 mm radiator may still conflict with tall motherboard VRM heatsinks, high memory modules, or a thick radiator-and-fan combination. Confirm the exact radiator thickness, fan thickness, motherboard layout, and cooler manufacturer dimensions before assuming a particular 360 mm installation will clear.
Power supplies and drive trays
Power-supply clearance changes significantly depending on the hard-drive configuration. With one 3.5-inch drive installed, the listed PSU length limit is 290 mm. With two 3.5-inch drive trays installed, the limit falls to 175 mm.
This is a major practical constraint for systems using a long 1000 W or 1200 W power supply. Do not select a PSU based only on the case’s largest published clearance; first decide how many 3.5-inch trays you need. Fractal documents the interaction in its PSU, HDD, and SSD support guide.

The Epoch XL has seven expansion slots, two 3.5/2.5-inch drive mounts supplied with the case, and two dedicated 2.5-inch mounts. There are no 5.25-inch bays. It is therefore designed primarily for modern SSD-based gaming, workstation, and content-creation systems rather than large legacy storage arrays or optical drives.
Build experience and access
The case provides 37 mm of cable-routing space, cable grommets, and fixed hook-and-loop straps. That is more generous than the regular Epoch’s 30 mm routing space, but it does not make every build effortless. Thick motherboard power cables, front-panel leads, GPU power connectors, and radiator tubing can still compete for room.
The top mesh, front panel, and PSU filter use tool-free push-to-lock mechanisms. The front panel pulls off, while the top panel slides away using a fabric tab. Side panels, the PSU bracket, and drive brackets use captive thumbscrews. These details should make maintenance and component access less frustrating than on a case that relies entirely on conventional screws.

Available panel choices also affect the system’s appearance. The Black Solid version prioritizes an understated, opaque exterior, while tempered-glass variants expose the build. RGB variants combine the glass-panel design with the RGB version of the included Momentum fans.

Epoch XL versus the regular Epoch
The smaller Fractal Design Epoch is the more space-efficient choice for conventional systems. The XL version is justified when its additional clearance or mounting flexibility solves a real hardware requirement.

Choose the Epoch XL for a very long GPU, a 360 mm cooler, an E-ATX board, a compatible rear-connector board, or simply more room during installation. Choose the regular Epoch when the build uses a conventional ATX or smaller motherboard, a shorter graphics card, and a top radiator no larger than 240 mm. The XL does not automatically improve performance; its benefit is flexibility.
What to check before buying
- Measure the desk. The case is 503 mm deep and 509 mm tall including feet and protrusions. Allow room to remove the side panels and top panel, and check clearance around the monitor stand and wall.
- Measure the complete GPU installation. Use 425 mm as the fan-only maximum, then subtract front-radiator thickness if applicable. Check width, thickness, connector position, and cable bend space.
- Confirm top-radiator clearance. A nominal 280 or 360 mm fit does not guarantee clearance from every motherboard heatsink and memory kit.
- Check the PSU against the drive plan. The limit changes from 290 mm with one 3.5-inch drive to 175 mm with two trays installed.
- Verify motherboard layout. Rear-connector support applies to specified ATX and micro-ATX layouts, not every rear-connector board.
- Decide whether you need the volume. A modest gaming build may pay for clearances and radiator options it never uses.
Who should buy the Epoch XL?
The Epoch XL makes the most sense for a high-end gaming PC, workstation, or content-creation system with a large GPU, a 360 mm liquid cooler, an E-ATX board, or a compatible rear-connector motherboard. It is also a sensible choice for builders who want three 140 mm fans included and value tool-free access, subdued styling, and generous component clearance.
It is a weaker fit for a small desk, a compact or budget build, a system with a short graphics card and 240 mm-or-smaller cooler, or a machine that needs several 3.5-inch drives. Buyers who require optical hardware should also look elsewhere because the Epoch XL has no 5.25-inch bays.

Fractal Design lists the Epoch XL in the configurations described above and provides a retailer locator through its official product page. Current price, stock, shipping, and warranty terms vary by country, retailer, color, and panel type, so they should be checked for the exact variant at the time of purchase. The available product information does not establish a precise launch date or a reliable current street price.
Verdict
The Fractal Design Epoch XL is best understood as a spacious, airflow-oriented ATX mid-tower rather than a compact everyday case. Its three 140 mm fans, front and top 360 mm radiator support, 425 mm fan-only GPU clearance, E-ATX support, and selected rear-connector compatibility give high-end builders meaningful flexibility. The trade-off is physical volume and a few important interactions: front radiators reduce GPU room, and additional 3.5-inch trays sharply reduce PSU clearance.
If those clearances solve a specific build problem, the XL is a strong candidate. If they do not, the regular Epoch or a smaller airflow case is likely the more efficient choice.
