Fortnite’s return to iPhone and iPad through alternative app marketplaces is no longer just a plan: Epic announced it on July 25, 2024, and began distributing the game in the EU on August 16, 2024. EU users can install it through the Epic Games Store or AltStore PAL. Availability varies by region, so this is not a universal App Store replacement.
Availability checked September 23, 2026. Epic’s current support pages list the Epic Games Store and AltStore PAL as iPhone and iPad installation options in the EU. Epic also lists Japan for those alternative-store options. In many other regions, including the United States, Epic says Fortnite is available through Apple’s App Store. Check Epic’s regional availability guidance before installing; country availability can change.
What Epic announced—and what actually launched
On July 25, 2024, Epic said it would bring Fortnite and its other mobile games to AltStore PAL in the EU, support additional third-party mobile stores, and launch its own Epic Games Store for iOS in the region. Epic separately said its mobile store would launch worldwide on Android. Epic’s announcement described a 12% fee on payments processed by Epic and no fee on third-party payments; those are Epic’s stated store terms, not a guarantee that consumer prices are lower.
The iOS plan became reality on August 16, 2024. Epic launched its mobile store on iPhones in the EU with Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe, and said those games were also beginning distribution through AltStore PAL. Epic’s launch announcement named Aptoide’s iOS store in the EU as a planned expansion. The available evidence here does not confirm Fortnite’s current listing there, so don’t treat that announcement as proof it is available through Aptoide today.

Why the EU—and not every iPhone everywhere?
The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) created the regulatory framework for alternative app marketplaces on iOS in the region. That enabled Epic to distribute Fortnite outside Apple’s ordinary App Store process; it did not mean Apple added Fortnite to the EU App Store or approved a Fortnite listing there. Epic had to distribute its marketplace and game through the alternative-installation process.
That distinction also explains why the original story was EU-specific. “Europe” is broader than the European Union: users in the UK should not assume they have the same access. Nor should the 2024 EU limitation be repeated as a present-day global rule. Epic’s current support information describes different routes by region, including App Store availability in many places and alternative marketplaces in the EU and Japan.

How to install Fortnite in the EU
Epic currently documents two local installation routes for EU iPhone and iPad users. Use the official marketplace source and Epic’s installation guide; avoid unofficial download sites or tools.
Option 1: Epic Games Store
- Install the Epic Games Store app using Epic’s official mobile-store instructions.
- Open the store from your Home Screen.
- Select Fortnite and tap Get.
Option 2: AltStore PAL
- Get AltStore PAL from its official website and follow its installation instructions.
- Open AltStore PAL and select Fortnite.
- Tap Free to begin installing the game.
These steps involve installing an alternative marketplace first, rather than finding Fortnite in Apple’s App Store. Apple may show additional permission or warning screens during that process. A warning is part of the alternative-installation flow and is not, by itself, proof that an app is malicious; follow the official instructions and make sure you are using the intended store.

What to expect from the different routes

Fortnite is free to download and play, while optional in-game purchases may cost money. Store fees and the price a player sees are separate matters: Epic’s stated fee structure does not establish that any particular item or purchase costs less through one marketplace. Use your usual Epic account if you want your account-linked progress and content, subject to Epic’s account rules.
Why Fortnite was missing from iOS
Epic and Apple have been in a long-running dispute over App Store payment rules and commissions. In 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store after Epic introduced a payment option that bypassed Apple’s in-app purchase system. The DMA later created a separate route for alternative iOS marketplaces in the EU. That regulatory change opened a distribution path; it did not settle every disagreement between the companies or make the game available through the same route worldwide.

The separate Samsung story
Epic also said it would remove Fortnite and its other games from Samsung’s Galaxy Store, citing Samsung’s decision to block sideloading by default on its Android devices. That was part of Epic’s wider mobile-store strategy, not the reason Fortnite was unavailable through Apple’s App Store and not a step in the EU iPhone installation process.

Before you troubleshoot
- Your country matters: EU alternative-marketplace availability should not be assumed for the UK or other European countries. Check Epic’s current regional guidance.
- Your device and software matter: Epic’s support instructions cover iPhone and iPad, but confirm your device meets its current requirements if the store or game does not appear.
- Use the right installation source: Fortnite updates and marketplace access are tied to the store route used to install it. Follow that marketplace’s official instructions if you need to update or reinstall.
- Cloud play is different: A browser-based or streaming option may let you play without a local installation, where supported, but it does not put Fortnite in your iOS app library.
