Epic’s reported 2024 figures show a fast-growing Fortnite creator ecosystem: about 70,000 creators, 5.23 billion hours spent in creator-made experiences, and payouts in the hundreds of millions of dollars. But the often-repeated $342 million headline is not consistently supported by the report behind it, which gives conflicting totals of $324 million and $352 million. The scale of the program is clear; that exact payout figure is not.

Fortnite’s 2024 creator figures at a glance

GamesBeat’s account of Epic’s 2024 ecosystem figures describes a substantial expansion in Fortnite’s creator-made experiences. These are reported figures, not a complete audited breakdown of creator earnings.

Measure Reported 2024 figure
Creators About 70,000, compared with about 24,000 in 2023
Published islands More than 198,000
Islands made with UEFN About 137,000
Islands played per day, on average About 60,000
Time in creator-made experiences 5.23 billion hours, reported as 36.5% of total Fortnite playtime
Daily active players in creator-made experiences Up 15% year over year
Creator payouts Conflicting published totals: $324 million and $352 million; the report headline says $342 million

These numbers suggest creator content is a major part of Fortnite, not a fringe feature attached to Battle Royale. GamesBeat also reported that more than 70% of players engaged with both creator-made experiences and Epic-made modes. That points to coexistence: many players move between official Fortnite content and community-built islands rather than choosing only one. GamesBeat’s report does not fully define whether its “creators” count means enrolled accounts, active publishers, teams, or creators who received a payment, so 70,000 should be treated as an attributed, rounded ecosystem figure—not a count of people all earning money.

The $324M, $342M and $352M discrepancy

The headline number needs a correction or a clear qualification. The GamesBeat headline says $342 million was paid to creators in 2024. In the article’s body, one passage says $324 million was paid to UEFN creators, while another gives a total of $352 million paid to creators. Those are materially different amounts, and the available source does not resolve the conflict with an independently confirming Epic announcement.

The prudent takeaway is that reported payouts were in the low-to-mid-$300-million range, not that $342 million is a settled, independently verified total. The figures may refer to different scopes, but the report does not establish that explanation. Until Epic’s underlying figure and its definition are confirmed, avoid presenting any one of the three totals as definitive.

The distinction also matters because “UEFN creators” and “creators” may not describe identical populations or payment categories. Fortnite has multiple creator-related programs, and the engagement-payout model is not the same as Support-A-Creator or newer in-island transactions. A headline total is meaningful only when its scope is clear.

How Fortnite’s engagement payouts work

Fortnite does not generally pay creators a fixed amount for each island download, nor does the engagement model work like a conventional game store where a player buys a creator’s island. Under Epic’s current Developer Program FAQ, 40% of eligible net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and most related real-money purchases goes into an engagement pool. The pool is shared among eligible developer islands and Epic’s islands according to the program’s allocation system.

“Net revenue” is calculated after applicable taxes and third-party platform fees. Eligible revenue includes V-Bucks spending and real-money purchases such as Fortnite Crew and other Fortnite offers. Epic says the remaining 60% supports ecosystem costs such as infrastructure, content, marketing, moderation, support and licensing. The 40% is therefore not a commission paid directly to each island, or a promise that each creator receives 40% of what players spend while visiting their experience. Each creator receives a proportional allocation from the pool.

Epic’s engagement-payout documentation identifies factors that can include active playtime, retention and return visits, playtime around Item Shop V-Bucks spending, and bringing first-time or lapsed players back to Fortnite. For qualifying new or returning players, Epic describes a six-month attribution period in which a creator can receive 75% of that player’s contributions to the engagement pool, subject to attribution rules. Search, direct links and Discover can be treated differently; Epic also notes regional and platform limitations, including limitations in the European Union.

These details make engagement quality more relevant than a raw island count. A published island does not automatically attract players, keep them playing, or qualify its creator for a payment. Epic can change the formula, and the Creator Portal’s payout estimates are not guarantees. Returned or cancelled purchases may reduce later amounts.

Eligibility, payment setup and timing

Publishing and receiving engagement payouts are not automatic. Epic’s current program guidance says participants generally must be at least 18, have an Epic account active in Fortnite for at least 30 days, and have edited in Creative, UEFN or Unreal Engine on at least seven of the previous 30 days. Creators must also accept the relevant terms, follow the developer rules, complete tax verification and set up payment through Hyperwallet. Epic lists an alternate eligibility route involving at least $73 in qualifying Fortnite purchases during the preceding 90 days; requirements can change, so check the official Island Creator and Engagement Program guide before relying on them.

Epic says engagement payouts are calculated monthly and generally posted about 30 days after month-end. A creator must meet the applicable $100 payout threshold, and the FAQ says unpaid balances may reset if the threshold is not reached within a rolling 12-month period. Tax and payment setup are prerequisites, not optional extras. Epic’s Creator Portal is the system for publishing and managing creator activity; its monetization information should be read as estimates until a payment is finalized.

Why the creator count grew

The reported increase from roughly 24,000 creators to roughly 70,000 is unlikely to have a single cause. UEFN gives developers a more advanced workflow than the original in-game Creative tools, while Fortnite supplies an existing audience, multiplayer infrastructure, discovery surfaces and a familiar identity system. The engagement pool provides a potential economic return that a hobby project otherwise may not have.

Those advantages lower some barriers to testing a game idea compared with launching an independent multiplayer title: a team can build within an established platform instead of creating every layer of distribution and online infrastructure itself. That does not remove the work of game design, testing, updates, community management or promotion. Nor does it guarantee that Discover will send an island traffic.

Epic added creator-facing features during 2024, including improved UI tools, persistence, custom NPCs, proximity chat and input triggers, according to GamesBeat’s summary. Better tools can broaden the kinds of experiences teams can build and make the platform more relevant to developers with Unreal skills. Brands and agencies may also see Fortnite islands as interactive campaign spaces, although promotional projects still require audience fit, rights clearance and ongoing maintenance.

Creator-made Fortnite is more than combat

GamesBeat reported growth in social roleplay, party games, deathruns, horror, tycoon-style experiences, RPGs and roguelikes. It also said variety content accounted for more than 30% of time spent in creator-made experiences in January 2025, up nearly 50% from January 2024. That is a dated comparison, not a claim about the category’s share in 2026 or proof that non-combat content has overtaken other formats.

The broader point is that Fortnite’s creator ecosystem can serve players looking for different kinds of play, not only competitive combat. A wider mix can give players reasons to stay in Fortnite between major first-party releases and can give creators more design directions. But category growth does not tell an individual developer whether a particular island can find an audience.

What hundreds of millions in payouts do—and do not—show

Even if the exact total remains unsettled, the reported scale is evidence that Epic has established a material economic channel for outside developers. Creator-made experiences account for a significant share of reported Fortnite playtime, and Epic’s revenue-sharing design gives the company a reason to invest in tools, analytics, discovery and creator programs.

It does not show what a typical creator earned. Dividing an aggregate payout by 70,000 would be misleading: the creator count’s definition is unclear, the payout totals conflict, and the available reporting does not provide a verified earnings distribution. It does not say how many creators earned nothing, fell below the payment threshold, or reached particular income bands—or how much went to the most successful teams. There is no defensible median or average creator income to derive from the figures provided.

Nor does the total establish that every published island is monetized, that income is evenly distributed, or that player counts translate predictably into earnings. Creators depend on Fortnite’s overall eligible revenue, player behavior, attribution rules, payout formula and discovery systems. That creates platform risk: a change to rules, recommendations or revenue allocation can affect a project even if its team controls the island’s day-to-day updates.

Is Fortnite commercially attractive?

It can be, for the right project—but the answer differs by creator type.

  • Individual creators: Fortnite can be a compelling place to learn, prototype and build for an existing audience. It is a poor basis for assuming dependable income before an island demonstrates sustained player engagement. Strong onboarding, repeat-play reasons, regular updates and compliance with Epic’s rules matter alongside the initial concept.
  • Small studios: UEFN can make sense when the idea fits Fortnite’s capabilities and the team values access to its audience and infrastructure. Budget for production, QA, live operations, analytics and community work, and account for reliance on Epic’s roadmap and payout formula. If the concept requires systems or control UEFN does not provide, a standalone release may be the better fit.
  • Brands and agencies: An island can support an interactive campaign, but publication is not the same as reach. Evaluate audience fit, licensing and approvals, ongoing maintenance, and whether players have a reason to return after the campaign moment. Promotion and distribution still need a plan.
  • Established developers: Existing Unreal experience may transfer, but Fortnite is not simply another storefront. The team is building inside a platform with rules and monetization controlled by Epic, rather than owning the full product, pricing, backend, player relationship and release path.

Compared with Roblox, Fortnite may suit teams seeking Unreal-based development, Fortnite’s audience and an engagement-based payout model. Roblox may suit creators whose work depends on its social-platform conventions and in-experience economy. Minecraft can be a better fit for modding, server communities or marketplace content. A standalone game offers more control over pricing, player data, updates and ownership, but places more distribution and infrastructure responsibility on the studio. These are strategic differences, not a numerical earnings comparison: the figures here do not establish that Fortnite is more profitable than Roblox or an independent release.

What the 2024 numbers still leave unanswered

A fuller assessment would need a consistent official payout total and its scope; a definition of “creator”; the number of creators who actually received payments; and an earnings distribution showing how payouts are spread. It would also help to know whether the reported 2024 trends continued in 2025 and 2026, and how newer in-island transactions interact with the older engagement-payout model. Without those details, the aggregate figures describe platform scale better than they describe the business prospects of any one creator.

For anyone considering the program, start with Epic’s official enrollment guide, program FAQ and payout documentation. Treat participation as a platform-dependent development opportunity, not a guaranteed income stream.
