Fortnite’s current Windows minimum is 8 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i3-3225, Intel HD 4000 or Radeon Vega 8 graphics, and 64-bit Windows 10 version 22H2 (or Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2). For a more practical experience, target 16 GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD and a GTX 960/Radeon R9 280-class graphics card. Epic Quality Presets require a much faster system, including an RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT-class GPU and at least 8 GB of VRAM.
These are compatibility tiers, not FPS guarantees. Resolution, rendering mode, drivers, cooling, laptop power limits and the particular Fortnite island all affect performance.
Fortnite PC system requirements
Epic’s dedicated support specification is the best current reference for native Fortnite on Windows. It separates the hardware needed to launch the game from the hardware intended for higher settings.

What “minimum” really means
Minimum hardware is a launch-and-play baseline, not a promise of 60 frames per second, high settings, stable frame times or quick loading. Epic warns that systems at this level may need reduced graphics settings and closed background applications.

Intel HD 4000 and Radeon Vega 8 are integrated graphics, so Fortnite does not strictly require a dedicated graphics card. Integrated GPUs share system memory and are especially sensitive to dual-channel RAM, resolution, cooling and laptop power limits. Do not assume that every laptop using one of these GPU names will deliver the same frame rate.
Recommended hardware for ordinary play
Epic’s recommended tier is a sensible target for regular Battle Royale and Creative play: 16 GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD and a GTX 960, R9 280 or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU. It still does not translate into a guaranteed FPS number.
Actual performance changes with resolution, rendering mode, view distance, shadows, effects, Nanite/Lumen-related options, driver version, thermal throttling, background processes and the specific map or match. A laptop running on battery or a low-power profile can perform well below its component names.

Priorities for competitive play
- Favor stable frame times over maximum visual quality.
- Use a CPU and GPU appropriate for your chosen resolution and rendering mode.
- Install at least 16 GB of RAM and use an SSD where possible.
- Match your monitor’s refresh rate to the frame rate your system can actually sustain.
Epic Quality Presets requirements
Epic Quality Presets are a high-fidelity target, not an alternative minimum. Epic specifies an Intel Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 3700X-class CPU, an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT-class GPU, at least 8 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD.
Those components indicate substantially more graphics headroom than the ordinary recommended tier. They do not guarantee a particular FPS because Epic publishes hardware classes rather than a benchmark at a defined resolution and settings combination.
Does Fortnite require an SSD?
Epic does not state a storage type in its minimum table. It specifically lists an NVMe SSD for both the recommended and Epic Quality configurations. An SSD is therefore strongly preferred for loading and general responsiveness, but the current support page does not establish that Fortnite cannot run from a hard drive.

Fortnite UEFN system requirements
Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) is a separate, PC-only creation tool. A computer that launches Fortnite may still be unsuitable for building and editing islands.
| Component | UEFN minimum | UEFN recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit version 1909, revision .1350 or higher | Same, with DirectX 12 support |
| CPU | Quad-core Intel or AMD at 2.5 GHz or faster | Same |
| RAM | 16 GB | 32 GB or more |
| GPU | GTX 960, R9 280 or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU | DirectX 12-compatible GPU with current drivers |
| VRAM | 4 GB | 8 GB or more |
| Drivers | Not separately specified | Nvidia 516.25 or newer; AMD 22.2.2 or newer |
| Storage | Not separately specified | NVMe SSD |
See Epic’s UEFN installation and requirements documentation. UEFN also requires substantially more memory and VRAM than the standard game.
Android, iPhone and iPad requirements
Mobile eligibility is not one universal hardware table. Epic maintains separate FAQ sections for Android native play, Android cloud play, iPhone native play, iPad native play and devices capable of 60 FPS. Device support and store access can change by operating system, country and distribution route, so old lists of “supported phones” should not be treated as permanent requirements.

- Fortnite for Android: Epic Games Store for mobile, Google Play and supported cloud options.
- Fortnite for iPhone and iPad: App Store availability in the United States, Epic Games Store distribution in the European Union and cloud options where supported.
For cloud play, Epic identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna. Cloud streaming moves rendering to a remote server, so the device may avoid native hardware requirements, but region availability, bandwidth, queue conditions and input latency still matter.
Console support
Consoles do not use PC-style CPU and GPU comparisons. Epic’s Creative documentation lists Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS and PC as supported Fortnite Creative platforms. The practical console questions are whether Fortnite is available on your platform, how much storage is free and which display or frame-rate modes that console supports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether your PC is suitable
- Open Windows Settings and confirm you are running 64-bit Windows 10 version 22H2 or a supported Windows 11 installation. Windows 10 Enterprise has a separate 21H2 minimum entry in Epic’s table.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Performance, and record the CPU model, installed memory and GPU name.
- Check the GPU’s dedicated VRAM. Epic lists no separate minimum VRAM value, 2 GB at the recommended tier and 8 GB or more for Epic Quality Presets.
- Identify whether Fortnite is installed on an NVMe SSD, another SSD or a hard drive.
- Update graphics drivers from the official Nvidia or AMD support pages, then test the resolution and rendering mode you intend to use.
- On a laptop, test while plugged in with the manufacturer’s performance profile enabled; battery-saving modes can reduce clock speeds.
If Fortnite launches but stutters
Start with the remedies Epic explicitly recommends: lower graphics settings and close background applications. Then check common practical causes such as shader compilation or asset streaming, slow storage, thermal throttling, outdated drivers, an unsuitable rendering mode and a low-power laptop profile. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not diagnoses that apply to every system.

Fortnite’s video settings include a Rendering Mode option, and the lower-fidelity performance mode is distinct from higher-quality modes. Labels and available options can change between releases; use the current in-game menu rather than relying on old configuration guides. See Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.1 rendering discussion.
Other requirements that are easy to confuse
Tournament security
An Epic staff post describes Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU requirements for PC tournament anti-cheat. That is a tournament-security condition, not a replacement for the ordinary Fortnite hardware table and not a statement that every Windows player is blocked from normal gameplay.
Check the Epic Games Communities post if you are troubleshooting tournament eligibility.
Epic Store version mismatch
The Epic Games Store card displays an older Windows 10 version 1703 entry, while Epic’s dedicated support article lists Windows 10 version 22H2 64-bit (or Enterprise 21H2) for the minimum tier. Treat the support article as the current authoritative specification and regard the store-card wording as an apparent listing inconsistency.
Recommended Free Tools
Fortnite is free to download and play on PC through the Epic Games Launcher; an Epic account is required.
