If Fortnite is completely silent, check the game’s audio levels and your output device. If the game sounds work but you cannot hear teammates or they cannot hear you, check Fortnite’s voice-chat channel, your headset’s mute controls, and any console party chat first. Those checks usually identify the cause faster than reinstalling the game.
Start with two questions: Can you hear Fortnite’s music, effects, and footsteps? And can you hear teammates—and can they hear you? The answers separate a game-audio problem from a voice-chat or microphone problem.
Quick symptom check

Try these checks first
- Check every mute and volume control. Raise Fortnite’s volume, the headset’s volume wheel, and the TV or monitor volume. Check the headset’s physical mute switch, inline controls, flip-to-mute microphone, and any controller mute button.
- Open Fortnite’s Audio settings. Check master volume, sound effects, music, dialogue, and voice-chat volume. Confirm voice chat is enabled. Menu labels and available device choices can vary by platform and Fortnite version.
- Restart Fortnite completely. If the problem began after changing headsets, switching modes, or updating the game, close and reopen it after confirming the intended device is connected.
- Reconnect and test the headset. Reseat a wired plug, reconnect a USB receiver, or re-pair a wireless headset. Make sure it is connected to the gaming device rather than a phone or another nearby device.
- Test another output. Try the TV or monitor speakers, or another headset. Test the headset outside Fortnite as well. If it fails in other games or system apps, the problem is more likely with the headset, connection, or platform than with Fortnite.
- Check for a wider problem. If friends on other devices have the same issue, check Epic Games Server Status and the Fortnite Community Issues Trello board before attempting a reinstall.
If Fortnite has no game sound
Missing music, effects, footsteps, and voice chat together usually points to a muted or misrouted output, a device problem, or Fortnite’s master volume—not a microphone permission issue.
- In Settings → Audio, raise master volume and check the sound categories that are silent. If the game uses a specific output-device option, choose the headset or speakers you are actually using; otherwise, check the platform’s system output.
- Confirm the headset is powered on, charged, paired, and set to the correct connection mode. For a wired headset, push the plug fully into the controller, console, PC, or adapter. Check that the cable or USB receiver is not loose.
- Check the device you expect to hear sound from. A monitor may have its own muted controls, and a headset can be connected while the console or PC still sends audio to TV speakers or another device.
- If only one category is silent—such as music or dialogue—return to Fortnite’s Audio settings and check that category’s volume rather than changing microphone or privacy settings.
- If the sound is muffled, crackles, or drops out, test a different headset or connection. Wireless interference, a low battery, a loose analog plug, a headset profile, or a platform audio setting can cause symptoms that a simple volume adjustment will not fix.
If Fortnite voice chat is not working
Check the channel and console party chat
Fortnite offers a Party Channel for people in the same party and a Game Channel for teammates who may be in different parties. Open the Social menu and choose the channel that matches who you are trying to talk to. If you are in the wrong channel, voice chat can appear enabled while the people you expect to hear are elsewhere. Epic’s voice-chat troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the channel.

On Xbox or PlayStation, platform party chat can take precedence over Fortnite’s in-game chat. Leave the console party or switch to game chat if you want to use Fortnite voice chat.
Check the voice-chat and microphone settings
- Confirm voice chat is enabled and raise its volume. Epic recommends setting voice-chat volume to at least 50% when troubleshooting whether teammates are audible.
- If you use Push-to-Talk, hold the assigned button while speaking. If you expect an open microphone, check that the mode is set accordingly.
- Check the headset and controller mute indicators. A microphone can be muted even while the headset still plays incoming game audio; conversely, a working microphone does not prove that the output is routed correctly.
- On PC, make sure Fortnite is using the microphone you intend to use and that Windows permits microphone access.
- If only one teammate is silent, ask them to check their mute, microphone, channel, and platform privacy settings. Your own settings may be fine.
PC: fix Windows sound routing and microphone access
Windows can send Fortnite’s audio to a different device from system sounds, and it can use a different microphone from the one your headset provides. Check both the system-wide devices and Fortnite’s per-app routing.
- Open Windows Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, select the headphones or speakers you want to use and make sure the volume is audible and not muted.
- Under Input, select the intended microphone. Speak and check whether Windows shows input activity. If it does not, check the headset mute, connection, and selected input before troubleshooting Fortnite.
- Open Volume mixer from Sound settings. Check that Fortnite (or the Epic Games Launcher, if shown) is not muted and is not assigned to a different output device.
- For the classic device controls, open Control Panel → Sound. On Playback, select the intended headphones or speakers and set them as the default playback device. On Recording, select the intended microphone and set it as the default recording device. Epic recommends checking these Windows defaults in its audio troubleshooting guidance.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and allow microphone access. The precise app permission shown can depend on how Fortnite is installed and launched.
- Close other apps that may be using the microphone, and check headset-vendor software for a separate mute, mixer, or device profile. If you use audio enhancements or spatial sound, temporarily turn them off as a test.
- Restart Fortnite after changing devices or permissions. If system sounds work but Fortnite alone does not, try Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting steps.
Keep Windows current and restart after changes. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; do not assume that an unsupported Windows installation receives the same ongoing support as a supported configuration.

On PS5, check the system-wide game voice-chat mute before changing other settings: press the PS button, open Sound, and disable Mute Game Voice Chat. Then restart Fortnite. Epic identifies this setting as a cause of silent game voice chat. It affects game voice chat, not missing music or sound effects.

If you are using PlayStation Party Chat, leave the party or switch back to Fortnite game chat. Also check the headset output and volume in PlayStation Sound settings, the controller’s mute indicator, and any mute switch on the headset. On PS5, voice chat may be briefly interrupted while Fortnite loads; Epic says it should return when loading is complete.
Xbox
If Xbox Party Chat is active, switch to Fortnite Game Chat:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Parties & chats and select the party.
- Press the View button.
- Choose Switch to game chat.
This is Epic’s recommended route back to game chat. If it does not help, check the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for communication and cross-platform play, then check the controller’s headset mute and volume. For a wired headset, reseat the 3.5-mm plug in the controller; Xbox says compatible wired 3.5-mm headphones can connect through an Xbox Series X|S controller. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
First establish whether the console is docked or handheld and how the headset connects. Check the headset’s microphone compatibility, mute, charge, and connection in another compatible application where possible. Bluetooth, USB, and analog headsets do not behave identically on every console or headset.

For docked Switch play, Epic warns that some 3.5-mm headsets can cause voice-chat problems. It recommends trying a USB headset, a USB wireless receiver, or a USB-to-3.5-mm adapter instead. This is a targeted workaround for that docked setup, not a reason to replace a headset before checking Fortnite’s channel and mute settings.
Nintendo directs Fortnite-specific microphone and headset questions to Epic in its Fortnite headset and microphone support guidance. Hardware behavior can differ among Switch models and Switch 2, so check compatibility for your exact console and headset.
Check parental controls, privacy, and region
Voice chat can be unavailable even when the hardware works. Check both Fortnite’s account controls and the platform’s communication/privacy settings. Epic parental controls may restrict voice chat, and a Cabined Account cannot use certain features, including voice chat, until the required parental consent is provided. Review Epic’s parental-control information if chat options are missing or locked.

If devices, settings, channels, and permissions look right—especially if several friends are affected—check Epic Games Server Status and the Fortnite Community Issues Trello board. A service-side issue or a known game issue will not be fixed by changing your headset or reinstalling Fortnite. Community posts about muffled or missing chat after an update are reports, not proof that a current, universal bug exists.
If only voice chat fails on one network, move network checks later in the process. Restart Fortnite and, if practical, test another network to see whether the symptom follows the connection. DNS settings, router configuration, firewall rules, system date and time, and SIP-ALG are advanced possibilities listed in Epic’s troubleshooting guidance; none is a guaranteed general audio fix.

Epic says Fortnite voice chat uses XMPP and identifies ports 5222 and 433 as required for connection. Do not forward ports automatically: many players will not need to, and changing router rules can affect network security or other users. Consider firewall or router changes only when simpler device, channel, account, and service checks point to a network-specific cause; follow the router maker’s or network administrator’s guidance.

When to update, verify, or contact support
Do these only after the simpler checks. Restart the console or PC, update the platform and audio device software where applicable, and then consider verifying Fortnite’s files on PC. A graphics-driver update is unlikely to solve a microphone-only failure, and reinstalling Fortnite will not fix a muted headset, blocked account permission, wrong Windows output, or console party-chat conflict. Avoid resetting all settings unless necessary: it can remove working controls, sensitivity, and accessibility preferences.
Contact Epic Games Support if the issue persists after checking settings, device routing, account restrictions, and service status. Include:
- Your platform and model, plus the Fortnite version or build if visible.
- Whether game audio, voice chat, microphone input, or only a specific category or mode is affected.
- Headset model and connection type (3.5 mm, USB, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth).
- Whether the headset works in another game or app, and whether another headset works in Fortnite.
- Whether other party members or players on other platforms have the same problem.
- When the issue started, including whether it followed an update, and screenshots of relevant audio or privacy settings.
That information helps distinguish a device fault from Fortnite settings, account restrictions, a platform issue, or a service-side problem.
