If you forgot your Samsung Galaxy’s screen PIN, password, or pattern, try the previous screen-lock method first. On eligible Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later, Samsung may let you use the previous lock for up to 72 hours after it was changed. If that option is unavailable, the legitimate recovery choices usually erase the phone.
Before choosing any reset, make sure you know the Google account previously used on the device. Google Device Protection may require it after setup, even when the factory reset itself succeeds.
First, identify which password you forgot
“Samsung password” can mean several different credentials. They are not interchangeable.

This guide concerns a forgotten screen PIN, password, or pattern.

1. Try the previous screen lock before erasing anything
Samsung’s previous-lock recovery feature is the only prominent self-service option in this situation that may preserve local data.
It may work when:
- Your Galaxy supports the feature and runs One UI 6.1 or later.
- You changed the screen lock within the last 72 hours.
- You still remember the previous PIN, password, or pattern.
Samsung’s regional instructions say the “Forgot PIN?”, “Forgot password?”, or “Forgot pattern?” option may appear after five or more failed attempts. Labels and eligibility can vary by model, carrier, region, and software build.
- Enter the wrong screen lock until the appropriate Forgot option appears.
- Tap Forgot PIN?, Forgot password?, or Forgot pattern?.
- Enter the previous screen-lock method—not the one you just forgot.
- Create and confirm a new screen lock.
- Unlock the phone with the new PIN, password, or pattern.
Do not keep guessing the previous lock. Samsung’s regional guidance says the recovery flow can stop accepting attempts after three incorrect entries. If the option never appears, the phone may not support the feature, the 72-hour window may have expired, or the previous lock may no longer be retained.

2. Quickly test biometrics—but do not rely on them
Try fingerprint or face unlock if the lock screen still offers it. This may provide access without deleting data, but it is not guaranteed. Galaxy devices can require the primary PIN, password, or pattern after a restart and during other security checks. A recently restarted phone is especially likely to require the primary lock.
If biometrics work, immediately back up important files and change the screen lock while you still have access.

Before any reset: verify your accounts
A reset removes local data, but it does not necessarily remove anti-theft verification. From another phone or computer:

- Confirm that you can sign in to the Samsung account associated with the Galaxy.
- Confirm the Google account previously used on the device.
- If you just changed the Google password, wait 24 hours before resetting the phone.
- Test the new Google credentials by signing in from another device.
Google’s guidance specifically recommends waiting 24 hours after changing the account password before a factory reset. Changing the password again immediately is unlikely to solve a verification problem.
Important: If you cannot identify the Google account previously used on the phone, do not erase it until you have tried account recovery at Google Account Recovery. Setup may stop at Google Device Protection afterward.
What a factory reset deletes
A factory reset deletes apps and personal information stored locally on the phone. Backed-up or synchronized contacts, calendars, photos, files, and app data may be restorable, but there is no guarantee that everything will return. Local-only files, messages, game progress, and app data can be permanently lost.
If you regain access through the previous-lock feature, back up first:
- Photos and videos.
- Contacts, calendars, and other synchronized data.
- Messaging apps using their own backup tools.
- Authentication or account-recovery codes.
- Files stored on the phone.

3. Erase the Galaxy remotely with SmartThings Find
Use this route when the phone is associated with your Samsung account and is powered on and reachable. This is an erase, not a remote unlock.
- Open Samsung SmartThings Find on another phone or computer.
- Sign in with the Samsung account associated with the locked Galaxy.
- Select the phone from the device list.
- Choose Erase data.
- Complete any account verification and confirm the erase.
- Set up the phone again and restore available backups.
The command may be unavailable or remain pending if the phone is powered off, offline, not associated with that Samsung account, or not configured for remote finding. Remote locking is not the same as erasing and does not remove a forgotten screen lock.

4. Erase it through Google’s device-finding service
Google’s remote-reset route also deletes local data. It generally requires the phone to have power, network access, a Google account, device-finding enabled, and visibility on Google Play.
- Open Google’s Find My Device service on another device.
- Sign in with the Google account used on the locked Galaxy.
- Wait for the phone to appear and select it.
- Choose Factory reset device.
- Review the warning, verify the account, and select Erase.
- Complete setup using the previously associated Google account.
If the phone is offline or switched off, Google may not be able to issue the erase immediately. The command can take effect when the device reconnects. Google documents the prerequisites in its guide to erasing an Android device remotely.
5. Reset through the Galaxy recovery menu
If neither remote service can reach the phone, a hardware-button reset may be possible. The exact sequence varies by Galaxy model and software version. Newer phones may also require a USB connection during recovery, while older models and phones with a physical Home button use different combinations.

Identify the exact model, then follow Samsung’s model-specific instructions rather than relying on a universal “Volume Down plus Power” method. Google also directs users to the device manufacturer for button-reset instructions.

Keep the phone charged or connected to power. Android says a factory reset can take up to about an hour and recommends charging to at least 70%. Read Google’s factory-reset guidance before starting.

Samsung says that adding a Google account and screen lock activates Google Device Protection. After an unauthorized reset, the phone can require the username and password of the last Google account used on it.
That means a factory reset does not make a locked or lost Galaxy freely usable. It resets the software and deletes data, but it is not a way to remove anti-theft verification. If several Google accounts were used, you may need to determine which one was registered to the device.
If the phone was purchased secondhand and asks for the previous owner’s Google account, the legitimate solution is for the seller or prior owner to remove the device from their account or assist with setup. Do not use “FRP bypass” videos or tools.

Special cases
The phone is offline or powered off
Remote erasure cannot normally complete until the phone is powered on and connected. Leave a pending command in place only if the service reports that it will execute when the device reconnects; otherwise use the model-specific recovery procedure.
The screen is broken
A USB mouse or external display can help on some Galaxy models, but compatibility depends on the phone, adapter, display, and the condition of the device. Samsung mentions monitor connections for certain cases, but it is not a guaranteed unlocking or data-extraction method. If the display or touch layer is damaged, an authorized repair center is safer than repeatedly attempting unverified tools.
The keyboard is missing or unusable
Samsung sometimes recommends Safe Mode when a third-party keyboard is interfering. Safe Mode loads original software and may restore the Samsung Keyboard. It does not bypass a valid screen lock.
The phone belongs to an employer or school
Contact the organization’s IT administrator. A managed Galaxy may have administrator controls, enterprise reset policies, or account requirements that consumer recovery services cannot resolve.
If every self-service method fails
Contact Samsung Support or an authorized Samsung service center, especially if you have a broken screen, cannot remember the Google account, or need ownership verified. Have proof of purchase available.
Support may be able to help verify ownership and explain the correct recovery path, but it is not a guaranteed data-preserving unlock. A reset may still be required, and service availability, eligibility, and cost vary by model and region.

The fastest decision path
- Recently changed the lock? Try Forgot PIN/password/pattern and enter the previous method.
- Biometrics offered? Try them, then back up immediately if they work.
- Samsung account and phone online? Use SmartThings Find → Erase data.
- Google account and phone findable? Use Find My Device → Factory reset device → Erase.
- No remote route? Follow the exact recovery procedure for the Galaxy model.
- Cannot pass Google verification or prove ownership? Use Samsung Support or an authorized service center.
