The site most likely meant by “this hidden gem” is Travelzoo. It curates hotel, cruise, vacation-package and activity promotions, some of them member-only. That can make it a useful place to discover a deal Expedia may not put front and center—but Travelzoo is not a cheaper Expedia for every trip, and a headline price is not proof of savings. Compare the same dates, room or fare, inclusions and cancellation terms, then judge the final total.
What Travelzoo is—and what it isn’t
Travelzoo is best understood as a curated travel-deal platform and membership club, not simply a general-purpose booking marketplace. Its U.S. site promotes offers across hotels and resorts, cruises, vacation packages, flights and activities. Some offers are available to everyone; others are identified as Club Offers or otherwise require membership.
The booking path depends on the offer. A listing may lead to a supplier or another booking provider, or it may require a voucher or offer-specific reservation process. Before paying, check the full offer terms to identify who takes the booking, issues the confirmation, charges your card and handles changes or cancellation. Don’t assume that seeing a deal on Travelzoo means Travelzoo itself is the travel supplier.

What kinds of deals might you find?
- Hotels and resorts: Promotional room rates, sometimes paired with breakfast, resort credits, upgrades or other perks.
- Packages and tours: Trips that combine accommodation with flights, guided travel or other components.
- Cruises: Advertised fares that may include particular cabin categories, dates, onboard credit or other specified extras.
- Activities and local offers: Attractions, entertainment and experiences, which may be voucher-based.
- Limited-date promotions: Offers tied to particular travel windows, booking deadlines or small amounts of inventory.
- Member offers: Promotions that may require a Travelzoo Club membership; check access and membership terms for the specific deal.
Deal listings can change quickly. A Travelzoo page snapshot recently included examples such as a $99 Asheville hotel, a $599 Caribbean cruise, a $1,299 Japan package with flights and a $1,399 Mexico villa package. Treat those as examples of the kinds of advertised offers—not as prices verified today, guaranteed availability or a promise that the same trip will cost that amount for your dates. Prices may depend on travel dates, occupancy, room or cabin category, package inclusions and inventory. “Save up to” language also describes a possible maximum, not necessarily the saving most travelers will receive.
Where Travelzoo could beat an Expedia search
A curated deal service can surface negotiated, package-based, flash-sale or member promotions that are not prominent in a standard marketplace search. It may also present a hotel offer with extras—such as breakfast, a resort credit or an excursion—that make it more attractive than a bare room rate. For a cruise or guided package, the promotion may bundle components that are awkward to compare line by line elsewhere.

That is a reason to check Travelzoo, not evidence that it is consistently cheaper. An offer can look better because it uses different dates, a smaller room, stricter cancellation rules or a credit you would not otherwise spend. A nonrefundable price should not be compared as though it carried the same flexibility as a refundable one.

- Write down the exact trip: property or supplier, dates, number of travelers, occupancy, room or cabin category and package components.
- Open the complete terms: note blackout dates, booking and travel deadlines, minimum stays, voucher rules and any membership requirement.
- Work out the price basis: determine whether the advertised figure is per person, per room, per night or for the entire package, and whether it assumes double occupancy.
- Calculate the checkout total: include taxes, resort or destination fees, booking or service charges, baggage, transfers and any mandatory extras. If a fee is not shown until checkout, it still belongs in the comparison.
- Value the inclusions realistically: confirm whether breakfast, parking, meals, excursions, credits or upgrades are actually included and usable. A $100 food credit is not automatically worth $100 to you.
- Check comparable options: search the same dates and room or fare on the hotel or airline’s official site, Expedia and, where useful, a metasearch tool such as Google Flights for air travel.
- Compare flexibility: check whether cancellation is allowed, the exact deadline and time zone, change fees, and whether package components have different rules.
- Identify who supports the booking: know which company to contact if the reservation is missing, needs changing or is disrupted.
- Account for loyalty value: check whether a third-party reservation earns hotel points or elite-night credit, and whether status benefits or airline benefits apply.
- Keep the terms: save the final price, cancellation policy and written list of inclusions before paying.
The right comparison is final, like-for-like value—not the largest advertised percentage off. For example, a room advertised at $229 with a $100 food-and-beverage credit may be a worse choice than a $180 direct-booked room if you would not use the credit, or if fees erase the apparent difference.

Fine print that can change the value
- “Save up to”: This is a ceiling, not a guarantee of the discount for your dates. Look for the comparison rate and verify equivalent dates and room terms.
- Different inventory: A promotional rate may apply only to selected dates or a specified room category. Confirm the actual option before deciding.
- Perks with restrictions: Credits, upgrades and meals can have usage limits, blackout dates or conditions. Count only the value you are likely to receive.
- Cancellation and changes: A cheaper nonrefundable offer shifts more risk to you. Record the precise deadline and applicable time zone.
- Separate package rules: A package’s flight, hotel and other elements may not share one cancellation or change policy.
- Membership billing: Travelzoo’s site has advertised a $1, 30-day trial and a usual price of $50 per year, but membership promotions and renewal terms can change. Check the current checkout page for the amount, renewal date, what the trial unlocks and how to cancel. Don’t count on savings until you know the chosen offer is available to your membership level and the expected value exceeds the cost.
Third-party booking: the trade-off
Using an intermediary can be convenient, but it can add a handoff when something goes wrong. A hotel may not be able to change a booking made through another provider; a refund may have to go through the intermediary; and requests or loyalty benefits may not carry over. A voucher or special offer may also have conditions that are easy to miss if you rely on the listing summary instead of the full terms.
These are general considerations for third-party travel bookings, not a claim that Travelzoo has a unique defect. Before you book, confirm the supplier, what document proves the reservation, the refund route and the contact for urgent help. For a complex international trip or a stay you cannot easily replace, responsive support and flexibility may be worth more than a small price difference.

These are different tools, not interchangeable guarantees of a lower price. If you are searching for a flight deal, use an alert or comparison tool to discover options, then inspect the exact itinerary and fare rules. A low fare can become poor value after baggage, seat fees, inconvenient connections or strict change conditions.
When to book through Travelzoo, Expedia or direct
Travelzoo may suit you when the offer is available for dates you can use, the supplier and terms are clear, the all-in price is meaningfully better, and the included perks have real value to you.

Expedia may suit you when you want broad inventory, package shopping, one account for managing a trip or a small price difference does not justify a more complicated booking path. Check the exact package rules and account benefits before deciding.
Booking direct may suit you when the price gap is small, the hotel or airline offers a useful price match or loyalty benefit, you may need changes, or the third-party terms are vague. For airfare in particular, it is often sensible to use comparison tools for discovery and verify the same flight on the airline’s website.
Travelzoo’s strongest case is not that it makes Expedia obsolete. It is that curated offers can give you another place to look—especially for hotels, cruises and packages—before you commit. If the savings survive a same-date, same-terms comparison, and the booking path fits your tolerance for risk, the deal may be worth taking. If not, choose the clearer or more flexible option.
