FLIR ONE Thermal Camera Phone Attachment: Compatibility, Specs, and Buying Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FLIR ONE is a plug-in thermal camera for smartphones, not a standalone infrared thermometer. It is sold in separate Android USB-C, iPhone/iPad Lightning, and iPhone/iPad USB-C versions, so verify your exact phone model, connector, case clearance, and supported-device list before ordering. Teledyne FLIR lists 80 × 60 native thermal resolution, approximately one hour of battery life, and a US list price of $249 on its product page accessed in 2026.

What the FLIR ONE attachment does

FLIR ONE, formerly presented as FLIR ONE Gen 3, connects directly to a compatible phone or tablet and sends thermal imagery to the FLIR ONE app. FLIR positions it for building diagnostics, indoor-air-quality investigations, electrical inspection, asset reliability, and liquid-leak detection. Typical examples include checking electrical panels, locating HVAC temperature abnormalities, and spotting patterns associated with water damage.

The attachment combines an infrared sensor with a visible-light camera. Its MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) processing places visible-edge detail over the thermal image to make walls, components, and other features easier to identify. FLIR also describes VividIR as combining multiple frames to improve detail and reduce blur, with upscaling of up to 3×. These are image-processing features; they do not replace correct interpretation of thermal patterns.

Product and feature descriptions in this section come from Teledyne FLIR’s FLIR ONE product page.

  • JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last

Compatibility: check this before buying

FLIR lists three connector configurations:

Configuration Connection What to verify
Gen 3 Android USB-C Exact Android phone model, USB-C port access, operating-system support, and case clearance
iOS Lightning Lightning Exact iPhone or iPad model, Lightning-port access, iOS support, and case clearance
iOS USB-C USB-C Exact USB-C iPhone or iPad model, app support, and case clearance

FLIR’s own warning is direct: “Please check your phone model and connector type before purchase.” Use the current compatibility checker linked from the official product page rather than assuming that any phone with the same connector will work.

The adjustable OneFit connector extends up to 4 mm and is described as fitting many popular protective cases. “Many” is not a guarantee for a particular case, rugged bumper, camera grip, or port placement; remove the case or confirm the combination if the connector cannot seat fully.

What its temperature readings mean

FLIR ONE measures apparent surface temperature. It does not measure the temperature inside a wall, pipe, battery, or electrical component, and it cannot see through walls. The online FLIR ONE manual says accuracy depends on distance, ambient temperature, and the target material’s emissivity.

Reflective metal, insulated surfaces, glass, shiny paint, steam, and changing airflow can produce misleading readings. Use the thermal image to find a pattern or contrast, then confirm the cause with appropriate electrical, HVAC, moisture, or mechanical tests. The ±3°C or ±5% figure applies only under FLIR’s stated startup, device-temperature, and scene-temperature conditions; it is not a universal guarantee.

Useful inspection jobs

Home and building checks

  • Compare wall, ceiling, and window areas for unusual temperature patterns that may indicate insulation gaps or air leakage.
  • Look for temperature differences associated with moisture buildup or a suspected leak; confirm suspected moisture with a moisture meter or inspection method.
  • Document findings with saved images for a contractor, landlord, insurer, or maintenance record.

Electrical and mechanical maintenance

  • Scan accessible electrical panels and connections for abnormal heat differences while following electrical-safety procedures.
  • Compare HVAC supply and return areas, vents, motors, and accessible components for patterns that warrant further diagnosis.
  • Check vehicle seats, disc brakes, defoggers, and defrosters using the inspection guides FLIR lists in its app materials.

A warm spot is an observation, not a diagnosis. Do not open energized equipment or touch a suspected overheated part merely to validate the image.

App workflow and measurement tools

  1. Install the current FLIR ONE app supported by your phone and connect the attachment firmly to the phone port.
  2. Allow the camera to start and stabilize. FLIR’s typical-accuracy conditions specify waiting 60 seconds after startup.
  3. Frame the target within the fixed-focus distance of 15 cm to infinity.
  4. Use the centered spot meter for a surface-temperature estimate, remembering that emissivity, distance, and ambient conditions affect the result.
  5. Capture a still image or video, then save or share it from the app. App labels and available guides can change with updates.

The standard model’s single centered spot is a practical limitation when you need several simultaneous temperature comparisons; FLIR’s manual distinguishes the Pro and Pro LT models by listing three spots for those devices.

FLIR ONE versus FLIR Edge

FLIR’s FLIR ONE series page distinguishes direct phone-connected models from FLIR Edge. The FLIR Edge uses wireless connectivity and is positioned for difficult-to-access or out-of-view inspections.

Choose a direct-connect FLIR ONE when… Consider FLIR Edge when…
You want the camera physically attached to the phone and a simple phone-centered workflow. You need to hold the phone away from the target or inspect an obstructed, awkward, or out-of-view area.
Your phone’s exact connector variant is supported. A wireless setup better suits the inspection position and access constraints.

The available FLIR material does not establish an independent performance ranking between these products, so the choice should be based on connection method, access, supported phone, measurement tools, and workflow rather than an assumption that one is universally better.

Buying older listings

FLIR marks FLIR ONE Pro LT as discontinued and recommends FLIR ONE Pro as its replacement. Do not treat an old Pro LT listing or its specifications as the current FLIR ONE/Gen 3 specification. Confirm the model name, connector, app support, warranty, and return policy before purchasing old stock.

Bottom-line buying decision

Buy FLIR ONE if your phone is explicitly supported, you need a compact camera for surface-temperature pattern checks, and a direct phone connection suits your work. Its 80 × 60 native sensor, one centered spot, fixed focus, and approximately one-hour battery are adequate for many home-maintenance and troubleshooting tasks, but the device is not a precision laboratory thermometer or a diagnostic verdict. If you regularly need remote positioning or out-of-view access, compare the wireless FLIR Edge instead.
