If a website screenshot is white or blank, first open the same URL in a normal interactive browser. If it is blank there too, the problem is likely with the site; if it renders normally, check whether the capture ran before the page finished rendering, whether resources were blocked, or whether the capture method could access the content. Match the fix to the failure: wait for meaningful app readiness, inspect console and network errors, verify CORS and response headers, and distinguish automation challenges from rendering failures.

Start by separating a site problem from a capture problem

  1. Open the exact URL in a regular interactive browser, using the same network and account if possible.
  2. If the page is blank there too, troubleshoot the site itself: its JavaScript, server responses, permissions, or application state. A screenshot tool cannot capture content the browser does not receive or render.
  3. If the page works interactively but the screenshot is blank, compare the capture’s final URL and captured HTML with the intended page, then inspect readiness, errors, cross-origin content, automation defenses, and browser policies below.

This comparison also helps distinguish a truly white page from an access-denied or CAPTCHA response that happens to look like a failed capture.

Wait for the application to finish rendering

A browser load event is not proof that a JavaScript application has painted its meaningful content. Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering documentation warns that a page may be considered loaded before JavaScript finishes rendering: Cloudflare Browser Rendering documentation. Single-page apps can fetch data and update the screen after the initial HTML and load event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a meaningful readiness condition

  • Wait for a selector that appears only when the relevant content is ready, such as a page heading, results container, or application-specific ready marker.
  • When you control the application, expose or wait for an explicit state that means the content to be captured has rendered, rather than relying on a generic browser lifecycle event.
  • If the tool cannot wait for a selector or app condition, use a post-render delay long enough for the page’s work to complete. A fixed delay is a fallback, not proof of readiness: slow requests can outlast it, while a long delay wastes time on fast pages.

Cloudflare describes the core failure mode directly: “This happens because the browser considers the page loaded before JavaScript has finished rendering the content.” See its Browser Rendering documentation for the product-specific context.

Read console and network errors before changing capture settings

Open the browser developer tools for the same page and examine the Console and Network panels. Look for JavaScript exceptions, failed requests, blocked frames, 4xx or 5xx responses, Content Security Policy (CSP) errors, and unexpected response MIME types. A screenshot may faithfully show an empty app because a script crashed or the data request failed.

  • If an essential script or API request fails, fix its URL, authentication, server response, or network access first.
  • If a frame is blocked, identify whether it is a security-policy issue or a cross-origin boundary; the remedies differ.
  • If a resource is returned with the wrong status or Content-Type, correct the server response rather than hiding the browser warning.

Save the final URL and relevant errors alongside a failing capture. A redirect to an error page, for example, is different from a successful navigation whose app never painted.

Choose the capture method that can access the pixels

Native browser screenshots capture what the browser displays. DOM- or canvas-based fallback tools instead reconstruct or export page content, and can fail on content the embedding page is not allowed to read. That difference matters for cross-origin images and embedded payment forms, maps, or widgets.

Cross-origin images and canvas security

When foreign-origin image pixels are drawn into a canvas without CORS approval, the browser marks the canvas as tainted. Export methods such as getImageData(), toBlob(), toDataURL(), or captureStream() then throw a SecurityError. MDN explains the rule in its CORS-enabled images guide: “As soon as you draw into a canvas any data that was loaded from another origin without CORS approval, the canvas becomes tainted.”

  1. Set the image’s crossorigin attribute before its source is loaded, when you control the page.
  2. Configure the image server to return an appropriate CORS response header for the requesting origin.
  3. Reload the image after the attribute and server configuration are in place, then retry the export.

Setting an attribute in client code cannot grant permission the image server does not send. If you do not control that server, use a native browser capture for pixels the browser can display, or arrange an authorized same-origin or CORS-approved source.

Cross-origin iframes

A page cannot read the pixels or DOM inside a cross-origin iframe through ordinary DOM access. BetterBugs’ web SDK documentation calls out payment forms, embedded maps, and third-party widgets as cases that can “Render[] blank — the browser gives no page any way to read those pixels.” See BetterBugs web SDK documentation.

If the surrounding page captures but an iframe is missing, test with a native browser screenshot rather than a DOM reconstruction fallback. If you need a separate capture of the embedded origin, do so only when authorized and when that origin is accessible to your capture context.

Check MIME types and cross-origin response blocking

Chromium’s Cross-Origin Read Blocking (CORB) guidance explains that cross-origin HTML, XML, and JSON responses can be blocked from reaching a renderer in relevant contexts. It also describes an image response mislabeled as text/html with X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff as a case that can be blocked and disrupt page behavior. The guidance notes: “In rare cases, the CORB warning may indicate a problem on a website, which may disrupt its behavior.” See Chromium’s CORB guidance.

Inspect the response status, Content-Type, and relevant security headers in the Network panel. Fix the origin’s response to match the resource it actually serves; suppressing a warning does not make a malformed or blocked resource usable.

Tell an automation challenge from a rendering failure

Some sites respond differently to automated browsers. Browserless lists blank images, CAPTCHA pages, and content that differs from a real browser as signs that a site may be blocking automation. Its Screenshot API documentation advises inspecting whether the target is likely blocking automation.

  1. Check the capture’s final URL and, where available, captured HTML. Look for an access-denied page, challenge, or CAPTCHA rather than assuming the page failed to paint.
  2. Compare the result with a normal browser session, while respecting the target site’s access rules.
  3. Use only the browser context and access methods supported by your provider and permitted by the site. A challenge response is the target’s response, not a rendering defect to bypass indiscriminately.

Check whether a managed Chrome policy prevents screenshots

On a work-managed device, screenshot prevention may be an administrator policy rather than a site or capture bug. Google Chrome Enterprise documents policies that can prevent screenshots, allow URL exceptions, or disable screenshots, including for keyboard shortcuts, apps, and extensions. If captures fail only on a managed device or particular domains, ask your administrator to inspect the applicable screenshot policy: Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.

Common failures and practical fixes

The screenshot is all white, but there is no obvious error

Compare the interactive page, final capture URL, and readiness timing. If the page renders after a short wait, change the capture to wait for the actual content selector or app state. If the page stays blank in the browser too, follow the page’s own console and network errors instead of increasing capture delays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page works, but content loaded by JavaScript is absent

Do not treat a navigation or load event as application readiness. Wait for a selector that proves the needed content exists, or an application-specific ready condition. A fixed wait can help diagnose timing, but it is unreliable where network and execution times vary.

A canvas export throws SecurityError

Check whether foreign-origin pixels were drawn without CORS approval. Set crossorigin before image loading and configure the image server to send the required CORS header. If the origin cannot be configured, a client-only change will not authorize canvas export.

An iframe, map, or payment widget is missing

Determine whether it is cross-origin and whether the tool uses native browser capture or a DOM/canvas fallback. Try native capture for displayed pixels; capture the embedded page separately only when permitted.

Resources disappear alongside CORB or MIME warnings

Inspect the response headers and body type. Correct an image served as HTML, an incorrect status, or an unsuitable security header at the server. Do not disable protections as a substitute for serving a valid resource.

The capture contains a CAPTCHA, denial page, or unexpected content

Inspect the final URL and HTML to identify the target’s response. Treat it as an automation or access issue, not a blank-rendering issue; use provider-supported context and respect the site’s restrictions.

Screenshots fail only on a managed work setup

Ask the administrator to check Chrome Enterprise screenshot prevention settings, including any URL exceptions or policies applied to apps and extensions.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

  • Readiness: selector- or state-based waits avoid both premature captures and unnecessary long fixed delays. A delay is useful as a diagnostic or where no better signal exists, but cannot guarantee success when the page’s work varies.
  • Capture method: native screenshots are generally the right diagnostic when the browser visibly renders content that DOM/canvas export omits. They do not make a server-side CORS or access restriction disappear for scripts that need to read pixels.
  • Reliability: distinguish a rendering failure from a site error, policy block, or automation challenge by recording the final URL, console errors, and failed requests. Retrying the same premature capture or blocked request without changing the cause is unlikely to help.
  • Cost: repeated retries can consume time and provider quota. ScreenshotNeo states that blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, bot checks/CAPTCHAs, and cache hits cost nothing; its response headers report page verdict and billing. Other providers’ billing treatment is not established here, so check their own terms before building retry loops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a successful page load event mean the screenshot is ready?

No. A JavaScript application can paint meaningful content after the browser fires a load event; wait for a relevant selector or application state.

Can I fix a tainted canvas only by changing my JavaScript?

No. The image server must grant the required CORS access; setting the image attribute alone cannot supply a missing server permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can a native screenshot show an iframe that a DOM screenshot omits?

A native capture can capture browser-displayed pixels, while DOM-based code cannot read a cross-origin iframe’s contents.
