If sound disappeared after upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2, do not assume that every 24H2 installation has the same bug. The usual causes are an incompatible or partially installed audio driver, the wrong output selected, audio enhancements, or an audio service that failed to start. Microsoft also confirmed a narrower compatibility problem involving Dirac Audio and cridspapo.dll.
Start with Windows and manufacturer updates, then check output routing, disable enhancements, update or roll back the driver, and restart the audio services. These steps restore sound without immediately rolling back Windows or reinstalling it.
Is missing sound after 24H2 a confirmed Windows bug?
There was a real, Microsoft-confirmed compatibility issue, but it affected some devices rather than every PC. Systems using Dirac Audio with cridspapo.dll could lose integrated-speaker, Bluetooth-speaker, or Bluetooth-headset audio after installing 24H2. Applications could also stop recognizing the audio device. Microsoft placed a safeguard hold on affected hardware while a corrected driver was prepared, then said the hold was removed on September 11, 2025 after the vendor supplied the fix through Windows Update. Other post-upgrade failures are more ordinary: Realtek, Intel Smart Sound Technology, AMD, NVIDIA display-audio, USB, and Bluetooth drivers can be incompatible or only partly installed. Windows may also have switched to a monitor, HDMI receiver, Bluetooth profile, or another output. The timing points to an update-related problem, but it does not prove that 24H2 itself is defective in every case.

Use the decision branches below rather than applying a registry tweak or downloading a replacement DLL. The correct remedy depends on whether Windows detects the device and whether every application or only one is silent.
First: install updates and restart
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every offered update, including optional driver updates when they clearly match your computer or audio hardware.
- Restart the PC.
Pending updates can replace a missing or incompatible component. Microsoft lists this as the first response to audio that stopped after an update: Fix audio stops working after a Windows update.
Check whether Windows is using the right output
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the device you actually want to hear: built-in speakers, wired headphones, a Bluetooth headset or speaker, a monitor or television, or a USB headset/DAC.
- Confirm that the volume is not muted and raise the slider.
- If several devices are listed, test each one.
A device can be connected without being the active playback target. This is especially common with Bluetooth and HDMI/DisplayPort. For display audio, choose the monitor or television entry (often labeled with NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and update the graphics driver as well as the audio driver.

Set the intended playback device as default
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings.
- Open the Playback tab.
- Right-click the desired device and choose Set as default.

Turn off audio enhancements
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the output device currently in use.
- Scroll to Advanced settings.
- Set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Play a test sound.
Enhancements can interfere with playback after a driver change. The exact label can vary slightly by hardware and driver. Disabling them is a diagnostic step; it may remove vendor effects or tuning controls.
Update or roll back the audio driver
Update the installed device
- Open Device Manager from Start search.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts, then restart.
Also inspect System devices for Intel Smart Sound Technology or another audio-controller entry. A sound device can depend on more than the endpoint listed under “Sound, video and game controllers.”

Roll back when the failure began immediately after an update
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart the PC.
Windows shows Roll Back Driver only when a previous driver is available. It is a reversible test and should be tried before removing Windows updates.

- Press Start, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and choose Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and choose Restart.
- Test playback again.
A service that failed to start can make every application silent even when the driver and output device appear normal.
If your PC uses Dirac Audio
Check the computer manufacturer’s audio package if the machine shipped with Dirac processing software, or if the failure affects both integrated speakers and Bluetooth audio after 24H2. The file name cridspapo.dll is associated with the confirmed compatibility case. Do not download that DLL from a random website and do not copy one from another PC.

Install the corrected audio package through Windows Update or the PC manufacturer’s official support page. Microsoft says the corrected driver was distributed through Windows Update and that the safeguard hold was removed on September 11, 2025. The scope of that resolution is the Dirac compatibility issue; it does not repair unrelated Realtek, HDMI, USB, or Bluetooth failures.

When no output appears in Settings > System > Sound, volume adjustments are unlikely to help. Treat this as detection or driver failure.
- Open Device Manager and look for a yellow warning icon or an Unknown device.
- Check both Sound, video and game controllers and System devices.
- Install the audio, chipset, Intel SST, Bluetooth, or display-audio package for the exact PC model from the manufacturer’s support site.
- For Bluetooth hardware, remove and pair the device again after updating Bluetooth and audio drivers.
- Test another headset, USB audio adapter, or set of speakers. Test the suspect device on another computer or phone where practical.
A generic Microsoft driver may restore basic playback while omitting speaker tuning, microphone noise cancellation, jack detection, hotkeys, or spatial-audio controls supplied by the manufacturer. Prefer the OEM package when the device is missing or vendor processing is involved.

If only one application is silent
First check the application’s own mute and output settings. Then open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and verify that the app is not muted and is assigned to the intended output. If other applications play normally, a system-wide driver repair is usually unnecessary.
Special cases by connection type

Run Microsoft’s automated troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the automated audio troubleshooter. It can run diagnostics and attempt repairs. It is most useful after confirming the intended output, because a troubleshooter cannot make a disconnected or failed device produce sound.
When to remove an update, use System Restore, or seek support
Use stronger recovery options only when the failure clearly began with a particular update and the reversible steps above fail.
- System Restore: use an available restore point if one predates the failure. Restore points are not guaranteed.
- Uninstall a recent quality update: consider this only after driver, output, service, and OEM-package checks.
- Clean installation: reserve it for cases in which device detection, drivers, services, and update removal have all failed; it is disproportionate as a first response.
- Manufacturer support: contact the PC maker when the correct audio package is unavailable, the controller remains undetected, or hardware tests indicate a device fault.
A USB headset can provide a temporary workaround or diagnostic comparison, but it does not repair a missing internal audio controller. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities and unofficial DLL-download sites.
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro are listed by Microsoft as reaching the end of updates on October 13, 2026. That date does not itself fix an audio failure, but it matters when deciding whether to remain on 24H2 or move to a supported feature version.
