If Excel rows appear missing even though you never selected Hide, check these three causes first: an active filter, Freeze Panes or Split view, and a row height of zero or almost zero. Excel can also make rows appear absent when an outline group is collapsed or when you are using a print-oriented worksheet view.
Use the symptom table below to identify the likely cause before trying Unhide.

“Not hidden” usually means “not manually hidden.” Filtering, zero-height rows, grouping, and worksheet views can all remove rows from your immediate view without using the ordinary Hide command.
1. An active filter is hiding the rows
Filtering is the most common explanation when only some records disappear. Excel displays rows that match the selected criteria and temporarily suppresses the others. The rows still exist; they simply do not meet the current filter conditions. Microsoft explains how Excel filters data and how to clear them.

How to recognize a filter
- One or more header cells contain filter arrows.
- A filter or funnel icon appears in a header.
- Some row numbers are skipped.
- Only records matching a category, date, text, or number condition are visible.
- The missing rows return after the filter is cleared.
If the row numbers skip and filter arrows are present, clear the filter before trying to unhide rows.
Windows or Mac desktop Excel
- Click a cell inside the affected table or data range.
- Open the Data tab.
- Select Clear to remove the current filter criteria while leaving filter controls available.
- Alternatively, open the relevant column’s filter arrow and choose Clear Filter From [column].
- To remove the filter controls entirely, use Data > Filter.
Inspect every column header. A filter in a second or third column may be responsible even when the first visible column looks unrestricted.
Excel for the web
Select the filter arrow in the table or range header and clear the selected criteria or choose the command that restores all items. If the data is an Excel Table, check each header’s filter icon.

Clear removes filtering criteria. Filter toggles the filtering controls on or off. Sorting normally changes order; it does not normally make rows disappear.

If Clear is unavailable, select a cell inside the filtered range first. There may be no active filter, or the workbook may be protected or opened in a restricted editing state.
2. Freeze Panes or Split view is changing what you see
Freeze Panes does not delete rows or hide them. It locks selected rows or columns while the remaining worksheet scrolls. This can make a row seem missing when it is actually above the frozen boundary, below it in another scroll position, or visible in a different part of the worksheet.
A darker horizontal line usually marks the bottom of the frozen area. For example, if rows 1–3 are frozen, those rows remain in place while row 4 onward scrolls. Microsoft’s Freeze Panes instructions describe the boundary and the unfreeze command.
Remove Freeze Panes
- Open View.
- Select Freeze Panes.
- Choose Unfreeze Panes.
- Scroll through the worksheet again.
In Excel for the web, Microsoft uses View > Freeze Panes > Freeze at selection. If the desktop command is unavailable or disabled, switch to View > Normal; Freeze Panes may not be available in some other views, including Page Layout.

Remove Split view
Split view creates independently scrollable worksheet panes. A row can be visible in one pane but not another because the panes are positioned at different vertical locations.
- Open the View tab.
- Look for Split.
- Select Split again to remove the split.
- Return to View > Normal if the worksheet still looks unusual.
Freeze Panes locks a boundary; Split creates separate scrolling areas. Neither feature removes worksheet data.
3. The row height is zero or too small
A row can exist but have no usable vertical space. You may never have used Hide, yet a row-height value of 0 makes it effectively invisible. Microsoft documents a minimum row height of 0 points, a maximum of 409 points, and a standard default of 15 points. See Microsoft’s row-height guidance.

- Select the row headers immediately above and below the missing row.
- Right-click the selection.
- Choose Row Height.
- Enter a positive value, such as 15.
- Select OK.
If selecting the row is difficult, click the Name Box to the left of the formula bar, enter a range such as 10:20, and press Enter. Then use Home > Format > Row Height and enter a positive value.

Try AutoFit
- Select the affected rows.
- Choose Home > Format > AutoFit Row Height.
To apply it to the entire worksheet, select the worksheet’s Select All button first. AutoFit may not work as expected when cells are merged, text wrapping is disabled, content has unusual formatting, or the row has a fixed height. In those cases, set Row Height explicitly.
A zero-height row may be treated like a hidden row by Excel’s interface. The practical distinction is that the row can be invisible even when nobody used the Hide command.

Collapsed outline or grouped rows
Grouped rows are controlled by worksheet outline buttons rather than ordinary row hiding. Look beside or above the row numbers for outline levels such as 1, 2, or 3, and for a + or − control.
- Click the + beside the collapsed section to expand it.
- Alternatively, choose a higher outline level to show more detail.
- If the grouping is unwanted, select the grouped rows and use Data > Ungroup.
Page Break Preview or Page Layout view
Page breaks divide a worksheet into printed pages. They can make the sheet appear separated, gray, or spatially displaced, but they do not remove worksheet rows.
- Open View.
- Select Normal.
If dashed page-break lines remain in desktop Excel, use File > Options > Advanced > Display options for this worksheet and clear Show page breaks. Manual page breaks cannot be added in Excel for the web.
The rows exist but their contents are invisible
When row numbers are continuous and the row area is present, check formatting instead of looking for hidden rows:
- Font color matches the cell fill.
- White text is displayed on a white background.
- Conditional formatting changes the font or fill.
- A custom number format such as
;;;suppresses displayed values. - Zoom is unusually low.
- The row is too short to display wrapped text.
- Worksheet protection prevents formatting changes.
Select a cell and check the formula bar. If its value appears there, the data is present and the issue is display, formatting, or row height.
Genuinely hidden rows
A double line between row headers is a clue that rows were manually hidden. Select the rows immediately above and below the gap, right-click, and choose Unhide. Selecting only one visible row may not include the hidden row. Microsoft documents the double-line indicator and Unhide command.
For the first worksheet row, select the surrounding row headers or use the worksheet’s Select All control before choosing Unhide.
A non-destructive recovery sequence
Use this order when the cause is unclear. It starts with reversible view changes and avoids deleting data or formatting:
- Switch to View > Normal.
- Clear filters with Data > Clear.
- Use View > Freeze Panes > Unfreeze Panes.
- Turn off a split with View > Split.
- Expand any collapsed groups with the + outline control.
- Select the affected rows and use Home > Format > Row Height with a positive value.
- Try Home > Format > AutoFit Row Height.
- Only then try standard Unhide.
If the rows still do not appear
- Save a copy of the workbook before making broader changes.
- If you are using Excel for the web, open the copy in desktop Excel if available.
- Recheck every filter column and outline control.
- Inspect row height directly rather than relying only on AutoFit.
- Check whether worksheet protection or restricted editing is enabled.
- Test the same actions in a new blank workbook to determine whether the issue is workbook-specific.
- In supported desktop versions, use Go To > Special > Visible cells only to help identify hidden rows or columns. This feature is not available in Excel for the web in exactly the same way; see Microsoft’s guidance on locating hidden cells.
- Compare the workbook with an earlier version or backup.
In a shared workbook, be cautious when clearing filters or changing grouping. Depending on the collaboration mode and view being used, other people may see the effect of a view change. Avoid deleting filters, clearing formatting, or ungrouping until you understand the workbook’s sharing setup.
