Excel crashing while opening a workbook does not automatically mean the file is corrupt. First determine whether one workbook fails or every workbook fails, then isolate Excel’s startup components before repairing anything. Protect the original file, test a local copy, and follow the solutions below in order.
These steps apply to Windows desktop Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. Mac users have different menus and should not apply Windows registry or repair instructions.
Before troubleshooting: protect the workbook
- Do not overwrite the original. Make a copy and preserve any OneDrive, SharePoint, AutoRecover, or backup versions.
- If the file is on a network share, USB drive, SharePoint, OneDrive, cloud-sync folder, or web location, copy the duplicate to a local folder such as
Documents. A local copy removes synchronization, permissions, connection, and file-lock variables; it does not by itself prove the workbook is corrupt. - Test a new blank workbook or another known-good file. If every workbook crashes, prioritize Excel, add-ins, drivers, and Windows. If only one file fails, prioritize workbook recovery.
11 ways to stop Excel crashing when opening a file
1. Open the local copy from inside Excel
Start Excel directly, choose File > Open, and select the copied workbook. If this works but double-clicking the file does not, skip to solution 10. If the local copy works while the network version fails, investigate VPN connectivity, permissions, synchronization clients, file locking, or the storage server.
2. Start Excel in Safe Mode
Safe Mode bypasses Excel startup folders, changed toolbars, Excel add-ins, and most COM add-ins. It is an isolation test, not a permanent repair.

excel /safeand press Enter. - Alternatively, hold Ctrl while launching Excel and confirm that you want Safe Mode.
If Excel works in Safe Mode, an add-in, startup file, or customization is likely involved. If Excel still fails, continue with updates, repair, drivers, security software, and Windows-level tests. If Safe Mode opens Excel but the same workbook still crashes, the workbook or its contents remain suspect.

3. Disable COM add-ins
In Safe Mode, select File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, select Go, clear every checkbox, and choose OK. Restart Excel normally and test the file.
If the crash stops, re-enable one add-in at a time, restarting Excel after each change. The last one enabled before the failure returns is the likely trigger. Update or remove that add-in, or contact its publisher.

4. Disable Excel add-ins
Return to File > Options > Add-ins, choose Excel Add-ins in the Manage box, select Go, clear the checkboxes, and restart Excel. Re-enable items individually after testing.
If an add-in continues loading because of startup entries, Microsoft documents an advanced registry method. Back up the registry first and rename relevant OPEN, OPEN1, and similar values rather than deleting them. The usual area is HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0ExcelOptions for Excel 2016 and later. Incorrect registry changes can damage Windows or Office configuration.

5. Empty the XLStart folder temporarily
Excel can automatically open workbooks, templates, and workspace files in its XLStart folder. A damaged template or workbook there can crash Excel before you choose a file.
- Open Excel in Safe Mode.
- Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations and note the XLStart path.
- Move the files—not delete them—to a temporary folder.
- Restart Excel normally.
Return files one at a time, restarting after each, to identify the offender.
6. Check the alternate startup folder and automatic macros
Go to File > Options > Advanced, scroll to General, and inspect At startup, open all files in. Move that folder’s contents elsewhere temporarily. Excel attempts to open every file in this folder.
A startup workbook may run an Auto_Open macro. Hold Shift while starting Excel to prevent automatic macros during diagnosis. This is not a permanent fix; review or remove the problematic macro in a safe copy.

7. Use Open and Repair for a workbook-specific crash
Make a backup first, then open Excel without the problem file:
- Select File > Open and browse to the workbook.
- Select it once, then select the arrow beside Open.
- Choose Open and Repair, then Repair.
- If Repair fails, repeat the process and choose Extract Data to recover values and formulas where possible.
Recovery can lose formatting, charts, macros, names, external connections, controls, or embedded objects. If the disk or network location is unreliable, use the local copy before attempting repair.

8. Try Excel for the web as a diagnostic and recovery route
Upload a copy to OneDrive and try opening it at Excel for the web. If it opens in the browser but crashes desktop Excel, local add-ins, drivers, Office files, or profile settings become more likely causes. The web version may also let you view or lightly edit the workbook while you recover it.
Web Excel is not feature-equivalent to desktop Excel: VBA, desktop add-ins, controls, advanced connections, and some formatting may not work. Microsoft documents that workbooks over 100 MB cannot be viewed in Excel for the web from SharePoint Online. Free web Excel requires a Microsoft account and includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage.
9. Update Office, Windows, and device drivers
Use another Office app if Excel will not stay open. In Word, for example, select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If you see Enable Updates, select it first. On managed or volume-license installations, Update Options may be hidden; use Windows Update or contact your administrator.
Install pending Windows updates and check graphics, printer, docking-station, and display drivers. Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause Office stopped-working errors. Also update antivirus software rather than permanently disabling protection.

10. Repair Office and check file associations
On Windows 11, right-click Start > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or Office, select the three dots > Modify, and run Quick Repair. It is faster and less disruptive. If the problem remains, repeat the process with Online Repair, which is more comprehensive and may require internet access, sign-in, or Office reconfiguration. The repair applies to the Office suite even when only Excel appears affected.
If opening by double-click fails but File > Open works, suspect a file association or multiple Office installations. Open Excel directly, confirm the correct version is installed, and repair or reassociate the file type. Microsoft’s file-association guidance
11. Escalate with a clean boot, new profile, or reinstall
If the preceding steps fail, isolate background conflicts with a Windows clean boot or selective startup. Third-party services, shell integrations, antivirus modules, and synchronization tools can interfere with Excel.

Reinstall Office only after Safe Mode, add-in and startup-folder isolation, workbook recovery, updates, Quick Repair, Online Repair, and driver/background-software checks. Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter availability varies by version and currently does not uninstall Office 2024 according to its support page.

These results are diagnostic clues, not absolute proof. A large workbook may appear frozen while Excel calculates; check CPU or disk activity before repeatedly force-closing it.
When to contact support
Contact IT or Microsoft Support when the computer is organization-managed, multiple users have the same failure, the issue began after a company-wide update, or the workbook contains confidential, regulated, or business-critical data. Preserve the original file and versions before sending anything to a third party. Microsoft’s Excel known-issues page changes over time, so check it for current incidents.
Should you buy anything?
If you need the current desktop application and ongoing updates, compare Microsoft 365 plans at Microsoft’s official comparison page. For temporary access or basic editing, free Excel for the web may be enough. Do not pay for third-party recovery software until you have preserved the original and tried Open and Repair, backups, version history, and the web app; confidential files require particular scrutiny of any vendor’s upload and data-retention practices.

Start with isolation: test a local copy and another workbook, then run excel /safe. Disable add-ins and startup files before repairing Office. Use Open and Repair for a single damaged workbook, and Quick Repair followed by Online Repair when every workbook fails. Reinstall only after those reversible steps are exhausted.
