The notification usually means Windows or an attached service is trying to validate a password, PIN-backed identity, domain account, cloud token, VPN login, or saved credential that is stale, unavailable, or mismatched. There is no single fix. First lock the PC and sign in once with the account password instead of the PIN. On a work computer, connect to the company network or VPN, then update the affected password or saved credential. Remove only the matching entry from Credential Manager if one resource is failing.
What “current credentials” means
Windows validates sign-ins against the local Security Accounts Manager database or, on a domain-joined PC, Active Directory through Winlogon. It can also request credentials for Microsoft cloud services, VPNs, file shares, applications and websites. See Microsoft’s authentication overview.
- Password: The secret for a Microsoft account, local account or work/domain account.
- PIN: A Windows Hello sign-in method tied to this device. It can unlock Windows while a domain or cloud password is expired or out of sync.
- Cached domain credentials: Information Windows may use to sign in when it cannot contact a domain controller.
- Saved credentials: Entries in Credential Manager for networks, applications, websites and remote resources.
- Authentication tokens: Cloud or work-account sessions that can become stale even when Windows itself unlocks normally.
Windows Hello for Business uses a device-bound key or certificate rather than simply replaying your password. Microsoft notes that changing a password does not stop Hello unlock, but an expired or required password change can still block Active Directory resources: How Windows Hello for Business works.
Before changing anything
Identify what actually fails:
- Can you unlock Windows, but not a shared folder, Outlook, OneDrive, Teams or another app?
- Did the message start after a password change, administrator reset or password expiration?
- Does it appear only after PIN, fingerprint or face sign-in?
- Does it occur only on a company network or VPN?
- Is the notification recurring with no visible access failure?
A notification without a failed operation may be a background authentication request. Suppressing it can hide the symptom without repairing the credential.

Quick fix: sign in with the password once
- Press Windows + L to lock the PC.
- Select Sign-in options on the sign-in screen.
- Choose the password icon, not PIN, fingerprint or face.
- Enter the current password.
- Lock or restart the PC and test the resource that triggered the message.
This does not prove the PIN is broken. It forces Windows to use the underlying password credential, which can refresh authentication for some account types. Available sign-in methods are listed under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options; see Microsoft’s sign-in options guidance.
Choose the procedure for your account
Microsoft account
Check Settings > Accounts > Your info and Email & accounts. For a known password, use Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password > Change. If you forgot it, choose I forgot my password at sign-in or follow Microsoft’s password recovery instructions.
Local account
A local account is stored on the PC, not in Microsoft’s cloud or an organization’s domain. Change it through the account’s sign-in options, security questions or another administrator account, as applicable. Do not delete and recreate the account until personal files and any encryption-recovery information are backed up.

Work, school, domain or Microsoft Entra account
Look for an organization email address, company branding or a username such as DOMAINusername. Connect to the office network or a VPN that provides access to the organization’s identity service. To change a domain password, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, choose Change a password, enter the old and new passwords, sign out and sign back in. Domain-controller connectivity is required.
If the old password is unknown or expired, use the organization’s reset portal or contact the help desk. Do not assume an offline change will immediately synchronize with the domain.

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. This key varies by manufacturer and model, but it’s often F2, F10, Esc, or Delete. - In the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, locate the Boot Options or Boot Order section. - Use the arrow keys to select your USB drive and move it to the top of the boot priority list. - Save your changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
- After that its will take few minutes to reset Windows login password
- Package includes instruction how to use "Password reset USB" software
- Search Start for Credential Manager.
- Open Credential Manager Control panel.
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Find the entry matching the affected server, share, VPN or application.
- Remove only that clearly stale entry.
- Reconnect and enter the current credentials.
Web Credentials contains website and app sign-ins. Deleting unrelated entries can sign you out elsewhere. Credential Manager manages saved access; it is not a supported way to reveal a forgotten password. Details: Credential Manager in Windows.

When a password changed or expired on a work PC
Changed while the PC was off the company network
A domain PC may still unlock with an old cached logon while servers reject it. Connect to the corporate VPN or office network, sign in with the current password, lock and unlock, then test a domain resource. Microsoft explains this cached-logon behavior and recovery at Cached user logon fails.
VPN connects only after sign-in
This can create a circular dependency: the PC needs domain access before sign-in, while the VPN requires a signed-in user. Ask IT whether the organization supports pre-logon or device-tunnel VPN, cached domain logon or a separate local account for starting the VPN. Do not apply a registry edit as a general solution.

- ✅ Supports Windows 7, 8, 10, and some 11 systems (local accounts only)
VPN says connected but authentication still fails
“Connected” does not guarantee internal DNS, routing or domain-controller reachability. IT should verify internal DNS resolution, a reachable domain controller, VPN routes, clock synchronization, Active Directory replication, account lockout or expiration, Windows Hello for Business provisioning and Microsoft Entra registration. Microsoft’s guidance is at Single sign-on over VPN and Wi-Fi.
Windows Hello and PIN edge cases
Resetting the PIN may not change an expired domain password. A user who almost always uses Hello can miss a password-expiration requirement until Outlook, a file share or VPN requests “current credentials.” Sign in with the password and complete the organization’s password-change process. In managed environments, Hello for Business, Intune, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID and VPN policy can all contribute; business users should involve IT rather than disconnecting the account or device.

Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Symptom | Likely area | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| After PIN unlock | Hello/password mismatch | Sign in once with the password |
| After a recent password change | Cached or saved credential | Connect to work VPN/network and update the affected entry |
| Only on a file share or server | Saved Windows Credential or domain authentication | Remove the matching entry and reconnect |
| Only on VPN | VPN credential or domain reachability | Reconnect and ask IT about pre-logon VPN |
| Outlook or OneDrive repeatedly prompts | Cloud token, registration or app credential | Reauthenticate that app; escalate if managed |
| Several company PCs affected | Central identity or policy | IT should inspect AD/Entra, Hello, Intune, VPN and logs |
| Notification only, no failed access | Background or stale request | Diagnose before suppressing it |
What not to do
- Do not enter a password into an unexpected third-party pop-up.
- Do not delete every Credential Manager entry.
- Do not repeatedly guess a password if lockout is possible.
- Do not disable Hello or security policies as a first step.
- Do not remove a work/school account or domain membership without approval.
- Do not assume a connected VPN can reach a domain controller.
Why registry “fixes” are usually the wrong fix
Community discussions sometimes suggest registry or notification-policy changes to hide this alert, including notification-settings suggestions and current-credentials discussion. These are not a general Microsoft-supported repair. Suppressing the notification can leave the stale password, token or domain problem untouched.
When to contact IT or account recovery
- The account is locked, expired or reset by an administrator.
- The device is domain-joined, Microsoft Entra hybrid-joined or Intune-managed.
- VPN or pre-logon authentication is involved.
- You cannot reach the organization’s password-reset service.
- The message affects multiple users or computers.
- Work or school registration appears damaged.
For a personal Microsoft account, use Microsoft account recovery rather than trying to extract a saved password. For a local account, use its configured recovery questions or another administrator account.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It still runs, but normal technical assistance, feature updates and security fixes ended unless an applicable extended-support arrangement applies. That date is not the cause of this credentials notification, but plan an upgrade to Windows 11 where the device meets Microsoft’s requirements. See Windows 10 support has ended and Windows 10 update documentation.
