If Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center does nothing, hangs, or crashes in Windows 11, first use Settings → Network & internet. Network and Sharing Center is a legacy Control Panel interface; Microsoft’s current network controls are in Settings, although the older page remains available on many Windows 11 builds.
Press Win+R, enter ms-settings:network, and press Enter. Then test the adapter list with ncpa.cpl. These two checks tell you whether only the old page is broken or whether Windows has a wider adapter, service, driver, or network-stack problem.
Try these two shortcuts first
- Modern network settings: Press Win+R, type
ms-settings:network, and press Enter. Use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, Proxy, Advanced network settings, and Network reset from there. Microsoft describes Settings as the continuously updated configuration hub while Control Panel is retained mainly for compatibility (Microsoft support). - Adapter controls: Press Win+R, type
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. This opens Network Connections, where you can enable, disable, or inspect Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, Hyper-V, VMware, and other virtual adapters.
If Settings opens, the internet works, and ncpa.cpl shows your adapter, the failure is probably limited to the legacy page. Do not reset the entire network just to restore that old window.
Identify which problem you actually have

Restart Windows, check the taskbar network flyout, disconnect third-party VPN software temporarily, and note whether the problem started after an update. Confirm the exact build with Win+R → winver.

Run Microsoft’s current troubleshooter
Windows 11 routes automated network diagnostics through the Get Help app:
- Open Get Help.
- Search for
connect to network and internet. - Select Run network diagnostics.
- Apply a recommended repair and restart if prompted.
See Microsoft’s Get Help troubleshooter guidance. Results may point to DHCP, an adapter, a service, or a configuration error.
Reset Winsock and TCP/IP
Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator) and run these commands in order:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart Windows afterward. These commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP, renew the DHCP address, and clear the DNS cache. They cannot repair a disconnected cable, failed adapter, missing driver, disabled hardware switch, router outage, or broken VPN filter. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.
Check adapters, drivers, and services
Device Manager
Open Win + X → Device Manager → Network adapters. Look for a disabled adapter, a yellow warning icon, a missing adapter, or suspicious duplicate virtual adapters. Before uninstalling anything, download a backup Wi-Fi or Ethernet driver from your PC or motherboard manufacturer. If this PC is offline, use another device and copy the driver to USB.
If the issue followed an update, open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab and try Roll Back Driver. If unavailable, choose Uninstall device only when you have a replacement driver available, restart, and install the OEM package if Windows does not restore a working driver. Windows often reinstalls an adapter after restart, but this is not guaranteed for every OEM or virtual driver. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance recommends keeping a backup driver.

Services
Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and inspect:
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- Network Connections
- Network List Service
- Network Location Awareness
- DHCP Client and DNS Client
- WLAN AutoConfig (Wi-Fi)
- Windows Connection Manager
Do not change every startup type or blindly restart every service. Dependencies matter. For Wi-Fi, Microsoft specifically documents restarting WLAN AutoConfig. If a service reports an error such as 1068, inspect its listed dependency instead of changing registry values.

VPN clients, endpoint-security suites, third-party firewalls, Hyper-V, VMware, VirtualBox, traffic-shaping tools, and parental-control software can install filter drivers or virtual adapters. Disconnect the VPN, exit its client, and use only the vendor’s supported temporary diagnostic option. Record settings before uninstalling software and ensure you can reinstall it.
Never leave Microsoft Defender Firewall or endpoint protection disabled as a generic fix. Firewall settings affect network security; use Microsoft’s firewall and network-protection guidance.

Repair Windows system files
If Settings, Network and Sharing Center, and several other Control Panel applets malfunction, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowRun DISM first, wait for it to finish successfully, then run SFC and restart. DISM repairs the component store; SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither repairs physical hardware or an incompatible OEM driver. If DISM cannot obtain source files, Microsoft documents using a matching local installation source, for example:

Use Network reset only as a last resort
Go to Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset → Reset now → Yes. Microsoft positions this as a last step because it removes installed network adapters and their settings, restarts the PC, and reinstalls adapters with defaults.
Do not use Network reset merely because a legacy Control Panel page is inconvenient.
If sharing fails but internet works
For a trusted home or office network, open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi or Ethernet and set the profile to Private. A Private profile allows discovery and file/printer sharing; Public is safer on untrusted networks (Microsoft network-profile guidance). Then check Network discovery, File and printer sharing, firewall rules, and whether both devices are on the same local subnet. Internet access alone does not prove local sharing is configured.
When an update may be involved
Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and record the update date, Windows edition, version, and build. Check Microsoft’s release-health information for that exact version and install a newer cumulative update if one addresses the issue. Community reports about 2026 updates are anecdotal and do not prove that a particular KB caused this failure. Consider rolling back a driver, uninstalling a recent quality update, or using System Restore only as controlled recovery steps after simpler diagnostics.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact the PC manufacturer, your administrator, or a qualified technician if the adapter is absent from Device Manager, several adapters fail simultaneously, services return access-denied or dependency errors, the issue follows a BIOS or firmware change, the PC is enterprise-managed, or driver reinstall and DISM/SFC do not help.
