Error 0x800f0823 means Windows needs a newer Servicing Stack Update (SSU) before it can install the update you selected. Install the SSU that matches your exact Windows release, edition, architecture, and servicing channel, restart the PC, and then retry the failed update.
One important 2026 qualification: general support for Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education ended on October 14, 2025. If you are using ordinary Windows 10 22H2, an expected update may be unavailable because of end-of-support or eligibility rules. LTSC, IoT, Enterprise ESU, and managed-device servicing can follow different lifecycles.
What does error 0x800f0823 mean?
Microsoft identifies 0x800f0823 as CBS_E_NEW_SERVICING_STACK_REQUIRED. The update package requires a newer servicing stack than the one currently installed.
The servicing stack is the Windows component that installs and manages updates. Windows Update normally keeps it current, but the installed system and an update package can become out of sync after skipped updates, offline servicing, an interrupted installation, a restored image, or use of an older .msu file.

This error can occur through Windows Update or when an administrator manually installs an update package. It usually does not mean that personal files are damaged or that Windows must be reinstalled.

Before fixing it, identify your exact Windows installation
The correct SSU is specific to the Windows release and architecture. Do not install the first package you find in a search result.

Use winver and Settings
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Record the Windows version and OS build.
- Open Start → Settings → System → About.
- Record the edition, version, OS build, and system type.
Check whether the device is running Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT, or LTSC. Also identify whether it is x64, x86 (32-bit), or ARM64.
Use Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt and run:
systeminfoFor a shorter result, you can also try:
wmic os get Caption,OSArchitecture,Version,BuildNumberwmic is not available on every modern Windows installation, so use winver, Settings, or systeminfo if it fails.
Fix 1: Install the applicable SSU through Windows Update
- Save your work and connect the PC to reliable power and the internet.
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Allow Windows Update to install any prerequisite or servicing-stack update it offers.
- Restart when prompted. Restart even if Windows does not show a prominent restart banner.
- Return to Windows Update, select Check for updates again, and retry the update that failed.
Windows may not display a separate button labelled “Install SSU.” Depending on the release and update channel, servicing-stack functionality may be delivered separately or combined with another update.

If Windows Update says there are no updates, that does not prove the correct SSU is installed. The PC may be managed by policy, using an obsolete release, servicing an offline image, or outside the normal Windows 10 support lifecycle.

Use the Microsoft Update Catalog when Windows Update cannot offer the prerequisite or when you are servicing a machine or image manually.
- Find the Microsoft Support page for the failed update or the required SSU.
- Note the SSU’s KB number, if one is specified.
- Search that KB number in the Update Catalog.
- Compare every result with your installation.
- Download the matching
.msupackage. - Run the file and follow the standalone installer prompts.
- Restart if requested, then retry the original update.
Match the package for:
- Windows release and version, such as 22H2 or a particular LTSC release
- Windows client versus Windows Server
- x64, x86, or ARM64 architecture
- Edition or servicing branch where applicable
- Language and other applicability requirements shown in the Catalog
Never substitute a package for Windows 10 version 1607, Windows 10 1507 IoT/LTSC, Server, or ARM64 for a normal Windows 10 22H2 x64 installation. For example, KB5066587 is identified for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015; it is not a universal fix for every Windows 10 PC.
For some Windows 10 branches, the SSU and latest cumulative update may be combined. Therefore, use the update’s applicability information rather than assuming that every branch has a separately downloadable SSU. See Microsoft’s notes on SSU and cumulative-update packaging at Microsoft Support.
If the SSU will not install, check CBS.log
Open:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.logSearch for:
0x800f0823or:
CBS_E_NEW_SERVICING_STACK_REQUIREDThe relevant entries may show the failed package, the servicing-stack version Windows requires, and the version currently installed. This can reveal that the downloaded package targets the wrong branch or that another prerequisite must be installed first.
Restart Windows normally before trying additional repairs. A pending reboot can leave an earlier servicing operation incomplete.

Run DISM and SFC only when the evidence points to corruption
DISM and SFC are useful secondary repairs. They do not replace a missing SSU and should not be the first response to a confirmed CBS_E_NEW_SERVICING_STACK_REQUIRED error.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAfter DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannowRestart and retry Windows Update. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update, so it may fail if Windows Update itself is unavailable.
Component-store corruption is more likely when CBS.log or the new error points to codes such as 0x800f081f or 0x800f0831, rather than only reporting the missing servicing stack. Microsoft’s repair procedure is documented in its DISM and System File Checker guidance.
Repair DISM with a matching installation source
If DISM cannot use Windows Update, provide a valid Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessReplace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual source path. It should closely match the installed Windows build and edition. An incompatible source can produce another repair error or fail to repair the image.
Reset Windows Update components as a fallback
Reset the update cache only if the correct SSU has been installed or is unavailable through the normal channel, and logs suggest stuck downloads, damaged caches, or update-service problems.

In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptSvc
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start wuauservRestart the PC and retry the update. Run these commands as administrator, and do not rename the folders while their services are still running. If a rename fails because an .old folder already exists, check what is present before choosing a different name. Resetting these folders removes a possible cache problem; it does not install the required SSU. Microsoft’s broader reset guidance is available for Windows Update component troubleshooting.

Windows 10 support ended: can the PC still receive updates?
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general release, and general support for Windows 10 Home and Pro ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, an ordinary Home or Pro PC should not be assumed to receive unlimited new free monthly updates.
Different rules may apply if the PC:
- is eligible and enrolled in Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU)
- is covered by an enterprise ESU arrangement
- runs Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC
- runs Windows 10 IoT or another edition with a separate lifecycle
- is managed by an organization with its own update policies
If you expected a new ordinary Windows 10 update in 2026, first confirm that the device is eligible for that update. Otherwise, the issue may be lifecycle-related rather than a broken update cache. Microsoft outlines the available Windows 10 options, including ESU and Windows 11 upgrade eligibility, on its Windows 10 end-of-support page.
Offline .msu packages, images, and virtual machines
For offline servicing, install the prerequisite SSU before the cumulative or feature update that requires it. Verify the package architecture and target image build; the latest package for an online computer may not apply to an older image.
Inspect CBS.log after a failed package installation. For virtual machines, take a backup or snapshot before servicing and test the sequence on a copy before changing a production image. Be careful when reverting a snapshot after updates have been applied, because the operating system and update-management state can become inconsistent.

Escalate to Microsoft or professional IT support when CBS.log shows extensive component-store damage, a matching repair source cannot repair the image, the machine is business-critical, or you are servicing a production image.

For an unsupported or obsolete Windows 10 installation, consider a supported migration. An eligible PC may be upgraded to Windows 11 after checking hardware, application, driver, and backup requirements. Replacing the PC is sensible when it cannot meet Windows 11 requirements or has recurring servicing damage, but it is excessive for a healthy computer with a one-time SSU prerequisite error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is error 0x800f0823 a virus?
No. It is a Windows servicing error indicating that the update requires a newer Servicing Stack Update.
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Usually not. Install the applicable SSU, restart, and retry the update. Consider repair or migration only if the correct SSU and component-store repairs do not resolve persistent failures.

Does this apply to Windows 11?
The same error name can occur in other supported Windows versions, but the required SSU is version-specific. Use Microsoft’s guidance and the package applicability information for that installation.
What if I use Windows 10 LTSC or IoT?
Those editions can have different lifecycles and update packages. Identify the exact branch before downloading an SSU; a package for one LTSC or IoT release may not apply to another.
