Windows 10 has several different language controls that are often called the “language bar.” A floating toolbar, an ENG/US taskbar indicator, and the temporary layout switcher require different fixes. Match the symptom first, then use the corresponding setting below.
| What you see | What it is | Use this fix |
|---|---|---|
| A rectangular toolbar floating over windows | Legacy desktop Language Bar | Set Language Bar to Hidden |
| ENG, EN, US or another abbreviation beside the clock | Taskbar Input Indicator | Turn off Input Indicator, or remove layouts you do not use |
| A temporary list in the middle or corner of the screen | Keyboard-layout switcher | Check Windows + Space, Alt + Shift and other input hotkeys |
| It appears with broken typing in Search, Settings or sign-in fields | Text-input problem | Repair ctfmon.exe and the text-input service |
Hide the floating Language Bar
For a bar that floats on the desktop or docks itself to the taskbar, use the Windows 10 legacy Language Bar setting:
- Press
Windows + Ito open Settings. - Go to Time & Language > Typing.
- Select Advanced keyboard settings.
- Select Language bar options.
- On the Language Bar tab, choose Hidden.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Sign out or restart Windows and check whether the setting remains.
The same dialog offers Floating On Desktop, Docked in the taskbar and Hidden. Hidden is the direct control for a visible legacy bar. Microsoft documents this Windows 10 workflow at its keyboard-layout support page.
Understand the desktop-language-bar checkbox
In Advanced keyboard settings, review Use the desktop language bar when it’s available. This determines whether Windows uses the legacy desktop bar instead of the normal taskbar Input Indicator; it is not a universal “hide every language control” switch. Changing it can make the taskbar indicator appear or disappear.

Turn off the taskbar Input Indicator
If only an abbreviation remains beside the clock, change the taskbar system-icon setting:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Under Notification area, select Turn system icons on or off.
- Set Input Indicator to Off.
This controls the taskbar icon, not necessarily a floating legacy bar. If the icon returns, check the desktop-language-bar setting and remove layouts that are not needed.
Remove keyboard layouts you do not use
Extra layouts keep an input selector available and can be reintroduced by language or account configuration. Removing a keyboard layout is different from removing an entire language pack.

- Open Start > Settings > Time & Language > Language.
- Under Preferred languages, select a language and choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select the unwanted layout and choose Remove.
- Repeat these checks for every installed language.
- A layout may be listed under a language you did not expect.
- The display language and keyboard layout do not have to match.
- Remove can be unavailable when it is the only keyboard layout for that language. Add a replacement layout first, then remove the old one.
- If you need two or more layouts, keep them and hide the visual indicator instead of deleting them.
Microsoft’s current page may show newer Language & region wording, but the steps above are the Windows 10 route: Change your keyboard layout.

Stop accidental language switching
Windows + Space cycles through installed layouts. Alt + Shift may also switch languages, depending on your configuration. To inspect the assigned sequences:
- Open Settings and search for Advanced keyboard settings.
- Open Input language hot keys (the wording can vary by Windows 10 release).
- On Advanced Key Settings, review or remove unwanted key sequences.
A temporary popup after a shortcut is not evidence that the persistent Language Bar setting failed.
If the bar returns after every restart
Work through these steps in order:
- Set Language Bar to Hidden, apply the change, then sign out or restart.
- Inspect every installed language and remove duplicate or unwanted keyboard layouts.
- Press
Windows + R, enterC:WindowsSystem32ctfmon.exe, and pressEnter. This restarts the text-input component for the current session. - Open
services.msc. On Windows 10, find Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service; if it is disabled, set it to Manual or Automatic and start it if stopped. - Sign out and back in, then restart Windows.
- If the behavior is limited to one account, test a new local user profile.
- Use Windows repair tools or an in-place repair installation only after backing up data and exhausting the simpler checks.
The service also supports handwriting, touch keyboard and IME functions, so do not disable it merely to hide an icon. Microsoft uses the name Text Input Management Service for newer Windows releases; the older name applies to Windows 10. See Microsoft’s IME troubleshooting guidance.

When the problem is actually broken text input
Treat the issue as a text-input failure—not a cosmetic bar—if you cannot type in the taskbar Search box, Settings, Microsoft Store or sign-in fields, while typing still works in ordinary desktop applications; if Windows + Space does nothing despite multiple layouts; or if switching languages fails.

ctfmon.exe is the Text Services Framework process; Microsoft explains its role in Setting up the Text Services Framework.
Advanced diagnostics: scheduled task and registry advice
Windows 10 commonly uses Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > TextServicesFramework > MsCtfMonitor in text-input startup. Community troubleshooting associates this task with launching ctfmon.exe, but it is not a reason for ordinary users to delete or disable the task. Microsoft Q&A documents the diagnostic context at this Windows 10 Search discussion.
Some community answers also suggest adding ctfmon.exe to a registry Run key. Treat that as an advanced, profile-specific workaround—not Microsoft’s universal first-line fix. Back up the registry and understand the service and scheduled-task cause before considering it; see the community example at this language-bar discussion.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The settings and recovery steps above can still address the symptom, but a supported Windows version—or an applicable Extended Security Updates arrangement—should be part of your longer-term plan.
FAQ
Why does the bar appear when I use only English?
Windows can still have more than one keyboard layout installed under one or several languages. Check each language’s Options page and remove layouts you never use.
Can I keep multiple layouts without showing the bar?
Yes. Keep the layouts for switching with Windows + Space, and hide the legacy bar or turn off the taskbar Input Indicator.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is ctfmon.exe safe?
The file at C:WindowsSystem32ctfmon.exe is the Windows Text Services Framework component. Running that path is a diagnostic step; investigate a file in another location separately.
Should I disable Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service?
No. Disabling it can affect IMEs, handwriting, touch input, Search and other Windows text fields. Correct its startup state only when troubleshooting a text-input failure.
What if the setting resets after an update?
Recheck the desktop-language-bar toggle, taskbar Input Indicator, installed layouts and service status. A reset can reflect profile, policy or language configuration rather than an update alone.
