If Microsoft Store says “Something went wrong and Microsoft Store failed to initialize,” restart your PC, run wsreset.exe, then repair the Store app. If Repair does not help, reset the app and install pending Windows updates. These steps address common cache, app, and update issues without starting with risky commands or reinstalling Windows. The message does not identify one universal cause.
What the error means—and what to note first
The Store has opened far enough to show an error, but it cannot finish starting. Possible causes include damaged cache or app data, an incomplete update, incorrect date or region settings, account or licensing trouble, network interference, damaged Windows files, a managed-device restriction, or a problem limited to one user profile. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance offers several checks rather than naming one confirmed cause for this message. Its Store launch guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11: Microsoft Store doesn’t open.
Before changing settings, note your Windows version and build, whether the Store is blank or shows the message, whether other Windows accounts have the same problem, when it began, and any numerical error code. If only one app will not install while the Store itself opens, troubleshoot that app’s compatibility or licensing rather than treating it as a Store startup failure.
1. Restart Windows and install pending updates
Save your work and restart the PC, especially if Windows Update ran recently. Microsoft notes that a restart may be needed after an update before Store installations work correctly. Then check for updates:

- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Install available updates and restart if asked. If the Store opens afterward, you can also update Store apps from Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. If it will not open, continue with the cache and app-recovery steps. Microsoft’s steps are at Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.
2. Clear the Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type
wsreset.exe, then select OK. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft says it may remain open for about 10 seconds; Store should then open automatically.
This resets Store cache data; it does not reinstall Windows. It may help with a cache problem, but it cannot be expected to resolve every account, service, update, or system-file issue. If nothing happens, try the Run command once more, then proceed to Repair. Microsoft documents this command at I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.
3. Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if needed
Try the less disruptive Repair option first. If the Store still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select Microsoft Store, then Advanced options. Labels can differ by Windows build, edition, policy, or language.
- Select Repair and test the Store.
- If it still fails, return to Advanced options and select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app without the broader reinitialization of Reset. Reset reinitializes Store app data and settings, so you may need to sign in again or restore preferences. Microsoft’s general app recovery guidance also puts Repair before Reset: Repair or remove apps and programs in Windows.
4. Check time, region, account, and network
Verify date, time, and region
Make sure automatic time and time-zone settings are enabled and that the selected region is your actual region. Do not change your region to another country as a generic fix: Store availability, purchases, subscriptions, or licensing may be affected. Microsoft includes time and location checks in its Store launch guidance.
Check the account and device policy
Confirm that you are using the intended Microsoft account. On a work or school PC, an administrator may restrict or disable Store access; local changes may not override that policy. Microsoft describes account and organization-related availability issues at Can’t find Microsoft Store app.

Test for network interference
Confirm ordinary websites load. If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it temporarily for a test, then restore it. Check whether security software is blocking Store connections; do not permanently disable protection just to test. Avoid changing DNS settings without a specific network symptom or reason.

If the Store also reports a connection error, Microsoft’s guidance for error 0x80131500 includes reviewing TLS settings. This is a conditional diagnostic for that connection-error context, not a standard fix for every initialization failure. Press Windows key + R, enter inetcpl.cpl, open Advanced, and review the TLS options. Microsoft says TLS 1.0 and 1.1 should be unchecked and TLS 1.2 and 1.3 enabled where available. Do not enable obsolete protocols or disable newer ones experimentally; managed devices may enforce these settings. See Error 0x80131500 in Microsoft Store.
5. Run the Store Apps troubleshooter if it is available
The route depends on Windows version, and the troubleshooter may not appear on every Windows 11 PC.

- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps > Run the troubleshooter.
- Windows 11, if present: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps > Run.

Microsoft External Staff suggested DISM and SFC in a February 2026 Q&A response to this message. These commands target Windows component and system-file problems; they are not Store-specific resets and cannot be assumed to fix package registration.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run this command and let it finish:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Then run:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows when both commands finish, then test the Store.
The scans can take time and may appear paused. If DISM reports a repair-source, policy, or component-store error, record the exact message and stop repeating the same commands indefinitely. The Q&A response is at Microsoft Q&A: Something went wrong and Microsoft Store failed to initialize.

7. Test whether the problem is limited to your Windows account
Try opening Store from another existing Windows profile, or create a temporary profile for diagnosis. If Store works there, the failure may be tied to the original profile’s local data or account state. If it fails for every user, system-wide Windows, network, or policy causes become more likely. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause.
8. If Microsoft Store is missing or the PC is managed
If Store does not appear in Start search, first check whether you are signed in appropriately and whether the device belongs to an employer or school. Organization policy can control Store availability. Do not download a Store installer from an unofficial site; use Microsoft support or Feedback Hub if the app is missing and policy does not explain it. 9. When to stop troubleshooting locally
If the Store still fails across accounts after the cache reset, app recovery, updates, and system-file checks, stop cycling through commands. On a managed PC, ask the administrator to check policy, proxy, and security controls. Otherwise, contact Microsoft Support with the exact message, Windows edition and build, when it began, and the steps already tried.

A Windows repair installation or recovery option is a last resort, not a guaranteed Store fix. Back up important files before using recovery or installation media, and do not jump straight to a clean installation.
