The message “No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly” does not necessarily mean that no driver exists. Radeon Software may be mismatched with the installed driver, Windows Update may have replaced it, the adapter may be disabled, the package may not support the GPU, or Windows may not detect the hardware at all.
The dependable repair is to check Device Manager first, complete Windows Update, install the exact AMD or manufacturer driver, clean up a corrupted installation with AMD Cleanup Utility when necessary, and verify the result. If the AMD adapter is missing from Device Manager, stop repeatedly reinstalling drivers and investigate firmware, laptop configuration, power, seating, or hardware failure.
Quick fix
- Press Win + X, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters.
- Record the GPU model, any yellow warning icon or error code, and your Windows version.
- Open Settings → Windows Update, install all pending updates, restart, and check again.
- Download the correct package from AMD Drivers and Support or your computer manufacturer.
- If the adapter is detected but installation is damaged or mismatched, run AMD Cleanup Utility, preferably in Safe Mode, then reinstall.
- Restart and confirm the adapter works in Device Manager, AMD Software, Windows display settings, and any laptop-specific features.
1. Check whether Windows detects the AMD GPU
Open Win + X → Device Manager → Display adapters. You may see AMD Radeon graphics, AMD Radeon Graphics, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or an unknown device under Other devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- AMD adapter with no warning icon: Windows sees the hardware; concentrate on a driver or Radeon Software mismatch.
- Yellow warning icon: Open Properties → Device status and record the exact code before reinstalling.
- Microsoft Basic Display Adapter: Windows is using its generic driver, so install the proper AMD or OEM display driver.
- Disabled adapter: Right-click it and select Enable device.
- No AMD adapter: A normal driver reinstall may not help. Check firmware, OEM graphics configuration, physical connections, and whether the system actually contains AMD graphics.
Useful built-in tools are devmgmt.msc (Device Manager), dxdiag (display and driver information), msinfo32 (system model and hardware), and winver (Windows edition, version, and build). Before changing drivers, record the exact GPU, Windows build, desktop or laptop model, and Device Manager code. AMD’s identification guidance is available at Identify the Manufacturer and Model of an AMD Graphics Card.

2. Finish Windows Update before installing AMD Software
Go to Settings → Windows Update, install pending updates, restart even if Windows does not explicitly request it, then check for updates once more. AMD identifies pending or active updates as installation failure conditions; see Error 192 and Install Radeon Software.
Windows Update can also replace a working AMD driver later. After installation, restart, recheck Device Manager, open AMD Software, and compare the installed driver version with the package you selected. If the message returns only after Windows updates, the replacement—not necessarily the AMD installer—may be responsible.
3. Install the driver that matches the hardware
Use AMD Auto-Detect when the hardware is supported
Download Auto-Detect and Install from AMD Auto-Detect and Install. AMD’s current path supports Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later. Run the tool, let it identify the Radeon GPU or Ryzen processor with Radeon graphics, select the offered package, complete the installation, and restart.
Use manual Product Selector when detection or compatibility is uncertain
Manual selection is better when the PC is offline, Auto-Detect fails, the GPU is old, or you know the exact model. Use AMD Find Drivers for Graphics Products and select the complete product hierarchy. “Radeon RX 6000 Series” is not specific enough to distinguish, for example, an RX 6600, RX 6600 XT, RX 6600M, or integrated Radeon graphics.

Older products may require a legacy package. Do not install the newest Adrenalin release by guesswork, and do not use random third-party driver sites. If AMD lists no Windows 11 driver, explain the support limitation rather than treating an unsupported package as a guaranteed fix.
Use the manufacturer’s package for laptops and all-in-ones
OEM drivers are often required for brightness, display routing, power management, hotkeys, docking, and GPU switching. Check the exact laptop model and submodel on the manufacturer’s support page, along with BIOS, chipset, and supported Windows versions. AMD warns that reference notebook drivers can have limited support for vendor-specific features; its guidance is in Configure Laptop Switchable Graphics and Radeon Software Release Notes.
4. Clean up a corrupted AMD installation
Use AMD Cleanup Utility when Device Manager detects the GPU but the installed software is damaged, conflicting, or for the wrong model. It removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software; AMD says it does not remove AMD chipset drivers. AMD recommends Safe Mode.
- Save work and close applications.
- Download the utility from AMD Cleanup Utility.
- Avoid running it while Windows Update is actively installing.
- Run it and accept the prompt to reboot into Safe Mode.
- Allow cleanup to finish, then restart when prompted.
- Install the correct AMD or OEM graphics package immediately after Windows starts.
The display may flicker or briefly go blank. AMD says some cleanups take approximately 15–20 minutes and that the utility creates a restore point. Cleanup cannot repair a failed GPU, unsupported operating system, missing firmware device, or defective motherboard slot.

5. Reinstall AMD Software and verify it
Download the package again from AMD or the OEM, run it as administrator if required, and use the default location unless you have a specific reason not to. Choose Custom Install when you need component control. A Factory Reset/Clean Install can remove rollback options, so use it deliberately. Screens and labels vary by package version; follow the current installer shown on AMD’s site at Install Adrenalin Edition.
During installation, brief flicker is normal. Restart afterward, then verify:
- The intended AMD adapter appears under Display adapters without a warning icon.
- AMD Software opens without the no-driver message.
- Resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and external displays work.
dxdiaglists the AMD adapter and display-driver information.- On laptops, sleep/wake, brightness keys, docking, and graphics switching work.
6. Laptop switchable-graphics order matters
For a laptop with integrated Intel or AMD graphics and a discrete AMD GPU, install the integrated-GPU driver first and the discrete-GPU driver second. Use either the OEM packages for both adapters or a compatible generic approach consistently; mixing unrelated package families can break switching.

7. Interpret installer errors instead of repeating the same install
| Error or symptom | What it usually indicates | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 173 | No AMD graphics hardware detected | Check Device Manager, BIOS/UEFI, physical hardware, and the exact model. |
| 175 or 182 | Unsupported AMD hardware or configuration | Use Product Selector, a legacy package, or the OEM driver. |
| 183 | Third-party graphics driver detected | Remove the conflict or use Cleanup Utility. |
| 192 | Windows update, driver conflict, or system-file/registry problem | Finish updates, clean old graphics drivers, then consider Windows repair. |
| 202 or 206 | Windows Update is active or pending | Let it finish, restart, and retry. |
| 205 | Windows Update may have reverted the driver | Compare versions and reinstall after updates complete. |
| 1603 or 1604 | General installation failure or failed previous uninstall | Run Cleanup Utility, restart, and install again. |
| 99 | Driver package is not digitally signed | Use a properly signed official release; do not routinely weaken signature enforcement. |
| Black screen or flicker | Often temporary during installation | Wait; if persistent, restart and recover through Safe Mode. |
AMD documents these conditions in Install Radeon Software, Error 192, and Error 99. Temporarily disabling Driver Signature Enforcement is an advanced exception for a known official package, not a routine repair; restore normal enforcement with a standard reboot.
8. Repair Windows only after driver basics are complete
If the installer reports corrupted Windows components or system files, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Run DISM and allow it to finish.
- Restart if requested.
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Restart again and retry the AMD installation.
This is a later-stage repair, not the first response to a missing adapter. AMD’s related guidance is documented under Error 192.

On a desktop, shut down and check PCIe seating and required power connectors only if you are comfortable working inside the case and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance. Confirm that the monitor cable is connected to the intended GPU. Persistent absence can indicate a failed card, slot, power supply, or motherboard. If the adapter never appears after these checks, move to OEM support or hardware diagnosis instead of repeatedly running Auto-Detect.
10. When to roll back or stop reinstalling
The newest driver is not always the best choice for legacy cards, OEM laptops, or systems affected by a recent regression. Check AMD release notes and use the last known-good package when appropriate; AMD discusses stability troubleshooting at Troubleshooting Tips for System Stability.
Stop reinstalling and seek manufacturer or hardware support when the adapter remains absent after firmware and physical checks, Code 43 persists with the correct OEM driver, the installer consistently reports unsupported hardware, or the GPU shows physical symptoms or fails in another known-good system. No purchase is normally required to fix this message; replacement hardware should follow a confirmed hardware diagnosis.
