Remove the console from its dock, unplug the AC adapter for 30 seconds, then hold the POWER button for 20 seconds. Release it, connect the correct adapter directly to the console and a wall outlet, and press POWER once. This official forced shutdown does not perform a factory reset or intentionally erase games and saved data.
These steps apply to the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED. Switch 2 uses different power and dock requirements, covered below.
Try the 20-second forced shutdown first
- Remove the console from its dock. Switch Lite cannot use the standard dock.
- Disconnect the AC adapter from both the wall and the console or dock. Wait 30 seconds.
- Hold the console’s POWER button continuously for 20 seconds.
- Release the button.
- Connect the correct AC adapter directly to the console and to a wall outlet.
- Press POWER once.
Nintendo documents this sequence for a blank screen, no power or a system stuck in Sleep Mode (Nintendo support). A short press normally wakes a responsive console. On a responsive system, holding POWER for about three seconds opens the Power Menu; the 20-second hold is the recovery action when buttons appear ineffective (Power Menu guidance).

A nearly empty battery can leave the display dark and show a battery icon only briefly in the upper-left corner. Keep the console connected directly to a compatible adapter for at least 30 minutes before pressing POWER again. Nintendo’s no-power guidance gives a 15–30 minute charging window, while its charging article recommends at least 30 minutes when the battery is nearly depleted (charging guidance).

- Use a wall outlet rather than diagnosing through the dock.
- Try another wall outlet if nothing appears.
- Do not assume the battery is charging simply because a cable is plugged in.
Check the adapter and USB-C port
Original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED
The official adapter is model HAC-002. Check the model printed on the adapter. Look for fraying, split insulation, loose plugs, severe kinks or other damage. Nintendo warns that damaged or non-licensed adapters can have compatibility problems (Nintendo’s no-power guidance).
Switch 2
Switch 2 uses adapter model NGN-01. An original Switch HAC-002 adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but Nintendo says it cannot charge Switch 2 through the Switch 2 dock or provide Switch 2 TV-mode power through that dock (Switch 2 power guidance). Do not treat HAC-002 as the universal adapter for every generation.

Test before buying anything
If possible, try a known-good, compatible adapter. Nintendo also recommends testing the adapter with another Nintendo USB-C product, such as a Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Stand or dock. Inspect the console’s USB-C port for looseness, bent contacts, burning or an obstruction. Do not poke inside with metal tools, liquid or force. If the adapter powers another device but the Switch remains blank, the console or port may need service; if the adapter powers nothing compatible, replace the failed adapter instead.
Use the symptom to choose the next step

Nintendo Switch systems do not have a conventional power light, so the absence of an LED does not prove the console is off.

When the TV is blank but the console may be running
Remove the console from the dock and test its own screen first. In docked mode, the console display turns off because video is sent to the TV. If handheld mode works, investigate the dock, HDMI connection, TV input and adapter separately. Switch Lite has no docked TV Mode (Nintendo TV-connection guidance).
After it starts: update and adjust Sleep Mode
Install the system update
- Open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Update.
Only do this once the console is responsive (Nintendo’s recovery steps).

Review automatic sleep behavior
Go to System Settings → Sleep Mode. Nintendo lists console-screen intervals of 1, 3, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, and TV-mode intervals of 1, 2, 3, 6 or 12 hours, plus Never. You can also review Suspend Auto-Sleep While Playing Media Content and Wake When AC Adapter Is Disconnected (Sleep Mode settings). These settings change behavior; they cannot unfreeze a currently unresponsive system.

- The forced shutdown produces no response.
- No charging indicator appears with the correct, undamaged adapter after outlet and cross-device tests.
- The USB-C port is loose, bent, burned or visibly damaged.
- A charge icon appears but the console never starts after adequate charging.
- There is liquid or impact damage, unusual heat, smoke, smell or battery swelling.
Stop charging a swollen or overheating device. Nintendo directs users to service when these recovery and adapter checks do not resolve the problem and recommends including the AC adapter for testing. Start at Nintendo Support. Buying a dock or random USB-C charger is not a substitute for diagnosing a damaged console.
