If your Mac’s volume keys stopped responding after upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26, first check whether the keys are being treated as standard function keys, then confirm that macOS is controlling the audio output you intend to use. External displays, USB audio devices, Bluetooth headphones, and third-party audio software can all make working keys appear broken. There is no single Apple-confirmed fix for every Tahoe volume-key problem, so use the checks below to pinpoint yours before considering a repair or reinstall.
First, find out what is actually failing
Press a volume key and look for an on-screen response. Then open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and watch the Output volume slider while pressing the key. Play audio to check whether its loudness changes.
- The slider and sound change, but no volume indicator appears: the keys may be working; the remaining problem is visual feedback.
- The slider moves but the sound does not: check the selected device and its hardware volume controls.
- Neither changes: check keyboard function-key settings and audio routing.
- Only one output or one app is affected: focus on that device, app, or its driver rather than assuming the keyboard has failed.
Tahoe users have reported different audio and volume-feedback symptoms, but those reports do not establish one universal macOS defect. Apple’s Tahoe update notes describe general bug and security fixes; they do not identify a universal fix for volume keys failing.

1. Check whether the keys are acting as function keys
On an Apple keyboard, the top row can control system features such as volume, or act as F1, F2, and other standard function keys. If standard function-key mode is enabled, hold Fn or the Globe key while pressing the relevant key.

To check the setting, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys. Turn off Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys if you want the top row to control volume without holding Fn or Globe. Apple explains the setting and modifier-key behavior in its function-key guide.
Try the key normally, then try it with Fn or Globe held down. If only the second combination works, the key is responding and the setting explains the behavior. Some third-party keyboards use their own layouts or configuration software and may not expose Apple’s Function Keys setting; check the keyboard maker’s documentation rather than installing an arbitrary remapping utility. See Apple’s guidance on function keys.
2. Verify the selected sound output
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output. Select the output you want, raise its Output volume, confirm that Mute is off, and check that Balance is not shifted fully to one side. If available, turn on Play feedback when volume is changed. Options vary by Mac and output device. Apple’s Sound settings guide covers these controls.

3. Disconnect external audio devices and retest
Temporarily disconnect wired headphones, USB or Thunderbolt audio devices, USB speakers, and HDMI or USB-C displays that carry audio. Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth headphones and speakers, and stop using AirPlay for the test. Then select the Mac’s built-in speakers in Sound settings and press the volume keys again.
Apple recommends checking external devices when troubleshooting built-in sound; its steps include disconnecting headphones, external audio devices, and displays. See Apple’s audio troubleshooting guidance.
- The keys work with built-in speakers but not with a particular device: investigate that device, its driver, or whether it supports software volume control.
- The keys fail with built-in speakers and every other output: continue with the keyboard, software, and Core Audio checks below.
- The volume control is unavailable only for a USB or professional audio device: the device may not expose a macOS software volume control. Adjust it with its physical knob, controls, or manufacturer software instead.
4. Install the latest Tahoe update and restart
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, install the newest Tahoe update offered for your Mac, and restart. Apple’s update history currently lists macOS Tahoe 26.6 and describes updates as including bug and security fixes, but it does not promise that a particular release fixes every volume-key symptom. Check Software Update rather than relying on an older version number: the release offered can depend on your Mac and the date.

After restarting, test with the built-in speakers before opening audio apps, conferencing software, audio plug-ins, keyboard remappers, or display utilities. If the keys work at first and stop after opening one app or reconnecting a device, you have a useful lead: test that app or device separately.

5. Use Safe Mode or another account to isolate software
Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed repair. Its startup steps differ between Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so follow Apple’s instructions for your Mac’s processor rather than using the wrong startup sequence. Once in Safe Mode, select the built-in speakers and test the keys. Then restart normally. If possible, test in another macOS user account as well.
- Works in Safe Mode: a login item, audio utility, remapper, driver, extension, or other software loaded during normal startup may be involved.
- Works in another account but not your usual one: investigate per-user settings, login items, and utilities in the affected account.
- Fails in Safe Mode and another account: a system-level issue, device compatibility problem, or hardware fault becomes more plausible, but this result alone does not prove which one.
Disable suspect login items or quit audio-routing tools, equalizers, volume enhancers, meeting software, and keyboard utilities one at a time, then retest. If the Mac uses an audio-interface driver or virtual audio device, check with its manufacturer for a version explicitly compatible with your Tahoe release. Apple warns that third-party audio drivers can conflict with standard macOS audio drivers and recommends using a current compatible driver or the standard driver where appropriate. See Apple’s guidance on audio apps and drivers. Avoid deleting files from system or audio folders unless Apple or the vendor gives you a specific procedure.

Open Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, then choose Window > Show Audio Devices. Check that the intended output is present and selected, and look at the volume controls available for it. If a different, aggregate, or multi-output device is selected, switch to the Mac’s built-in speakers for a comparison.
Where the option is available, select the Mac’s speakers and choose Configure Selected Device > Use This Device for Sound Output. Device options vary. Some USB and professional audio hardware simply does not provide software volume control to macOS; in that case the keyboard may be functioning normally while the device requires hardware controls. Apple documents device assignment and volume-control availability in its Audio MIDI Setup guide.

7. Restart Core Audio only as a diagnostic workaround
If the audio service appears stuck after the safer checks above, restarting Core Audio may help test whether the problem is temporary. This command is commonly reported as a workaround, not an Apple-confirmed permanent fix for Tahoe volume-key failures:
sudo killall coreaudiod
Run it in Terminal only if you are comfortable using a command-line tool. macOS will ask for your administrator password; Terminal does not display the characters as you type. The command interrupts audio playback, calls, or recording, and macOS normally restarts the service automatically. If audio returns but the problem comes back, look for the app, driver, or device triggering it rather than repeatedly treating the command as a cure. Do not use broader commands that terminate multiple audio processes unless Apple Support or the device vendor directs you to.
8. Check the keyboard itself before replacing it
If only one keyboard is affected, test its connection and key mapping. For a wireless keyboard, recharge or replace its batteries, remove and re-pair it, and test a wired connection if possible. For a USB keyboard, try another port or adapter. Check whether the manufacturer’s configuration tool detects the media keys and whether a firmware update or custom mapping is available.
Not every key marked with a speaker icon sends the same media-key event macOS expects. If the keyboard’s own utility does not detect the keys, or the keys fail on another Mac as well, a keyboard firmware or hardware problem is more likely. If multiple keyboards fail only on this Mac, continue treating it as a Mac software, output, or system issue. Contact Apple or the keyboard manufacturer if the failure persists after these checks.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis
| What you observe | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Volume works only when you hold Fn or Globe | Change the Function Keys setting or use the modifier key. |
| Sound changes, but the on-screen indicator is absent | Check the Output slider and sound level; investigate visual feedback, not audio routing. |
| Built-in speakers work, but USB or HDMI audio does not | Check the external device, its driver, and whether it supports software volume. |
| Nothing changes with any output | Check function-key mode, restart, update Tahoe, and test Safe Mode or another account. |
| Works in Safe Mode or another account | Isolate login items, per-user settings, keyboard remappers, and audio utilities. |
| Volume control is greyed out for one device | Use the device’s hardware controls or manufacturer software. |
| Core Audio restart helps only temporarily | Identify the app, driver, or device associated with the recurring failure. |
